Does anyone know what material the "fur" is made of?

They look very real.

I recently got one of the newer models. This one seems to have a bigger head than the one I got years ago.

The fur? looks the same as the one I used to have.

He walked off after a nearly normal program.

A Deluxe Rocky I recently purchased uses what appears to be rabbit fur. I pounded the thing outside for nearly 30 minutes to get the loose fur gone. Nothing is worse than a shedding Rocky. One slight problem with mine, the spring in encased in plastic. This means it won't spring quickly...it takes too long for the air to escape from the compressed spring. I had to "Operate" on Rocky......

Take out wrenched ankle! OPERATION!

Harris,
My spring skunk is made from real rabbit fur. I think most of the "deluxe" versions of the spring animals are made from the fur of the magician's best friend also.
Muzicman, thanks for that tip. Some of the animals I have played with have had a very "slow" spring. Once I would not buy a deluxe Rocky because of this. I just thought the spring was too weak. Maybe it was a fixable problem? I'll try to remember that next time.

Hi,

I bought my Rocky many years ago. Back then you could only buy Rocky, there weren't other spring animals that I was aware of, and there were no 'deluxe' versions - just your common or garden variety Rocky!
It looks all the World like rabbit fur to me. I helped a magician friend out in his shop for a little while and I noticed the Rockys'that are made now don't seem anywhere near the quality of the old ones.
Cheers

The deluxe is the only way to go. If it looks like a stuffed animal at a glance it won't get the same reactions. Although my patter eventually lets them know it's just a "Bedspring and a piece of carpet" (as David Williamson called it)..I really like them to take double takes and wonder for awhile if it is real. My old normal Rocky looks like a stuffed animal. This thing would NOT fool anyone for even one second. My new one, has a longer face, a leather nose, glassy eyes, and brown rabbit fur. Just holding him without movement makes people wonder. He starts eating kibble out of my hand and sqirming around, some people are convinced he's real. Don't waste time with the regular Rocky, not even for practice. They react differently. Get the DELUXE version and beat the fur out of it when you first get it. The real fur does shed. Then practice to make it look real.

I have the Original Rocky, and it is made with rabbit fur. That thing does shed a lot. It adds to the realism, reminds me of my cat! Maybe I should beat it. But, I was shaking him out, and his eye popped out, so I need to be more gentle with him.
The one I have has way too much cardboard in his head, and it looks like he bends his body, not his head.
Jim Pace used the line "He is a slinky in a fur coat. What every guy needs, a slinky in a fur coat..."

Great line about the slinky.

Earlier in my program I actually use a slinky.

Last July 4th(2003) I got a reminder that metal conducts heat when left out in the sun. I did two stage shows for the Kansas City Spirit Festival. (No covering) It was one of the last outside events I did.(105 in the shade)

Re: The Cat.

Bob(My "Rocky". I named him after the Ebayer I bought it from) is the only puppet that gives my Cat a second notice. Perhaps it is the origin of the fur.

Mister Mystery,
Where did you get your spring skunk? My friend uses Rocky, so I've been looking for something different.

So I got a new one, the fur isn't as dark as the tail the spring is rubisg the eye are boring dull the nose is to long and not as detailed as the old one.
Oh well.

One might be wise to loook at the Folmanis Skunk Puppet...it's not a Spring job...just a puppet...but it sure looks good! Maybe use the puppet then do a switch to the spring to leap about...

Deluxe is the best way to go. I've gotten the cheap ones and the fur is very coarse.

I recently had the opportunity to look at a vintage Rocky Raccoon alongside the new ones being made by Magic Masters and the new ones are not as nice as the older ones they used to make. The older one has a larger head, larger snout and looks better all around. It is a shame that neither Magic Masters nor the companies that make knock offs can match the quality of this particular product as it once existed. I even took a photo of the older one alongside the newer one in case I ever buy a used one from another magician so that I will be able to determine whether I am looking at an older one or a newer one. My advice: Find an old one that is in good shape if you see it anywhere, buy it and take good care of it.

can you tell me, where I can find some information to the "Rocky" spring puppet?

Best wishes,

If you are looking to buy one, practically every online magic store sells them.

As far as instruction, there is a DVD by Jim Pace about manipulating spring puppets, which is usually sold by the same online stores that sell Rocky.

Just type "Rocky Raccoon Spring Puppet" into your Google search and you will come up with dozens of hits on where to find these. They run anywhere from $25 - $40, depending on where you buy them.

Jim Pace actually sells Rocky Raccoon in addition to his own DVD which showcases his handling of Rocky. So, you may want to reach out to him directly.

I recently just bought a magic Masters Rocky. Mine wore out. Magic Masters sells them but they are terrible. They used to be great but the tail is cut in half, the stitching shows, the fur is horrible and it looks cheaply made compared to the way they used to make them. DO NOT BUY MAGIC MASTERS ROCKY. The new ones are cheap and are not good. Buyers beware!!!
