I have almost zero experience with the Egg Bag, apart from some long-forgotten childhood dabbling with what I suspect was probably an Adams version.

But I know it’s a classic. So I’m getting interested in really learning it, and adding it to my modest repertoire.

Problem is, there seems to be a confusingly large range of makes and models. Each has its fans and supporters (and critics).

So where does an Egg Bag newbie begin?

Don’t want to cheap out and buy a budget “student” model, only to end up upgrading later. But nor as a newbie do I need the absolute top-notch luxury premium edition, either.

So, what might be the “gold standard” among available Egg Bags today?

(Malini, or Senor Mardo, or Hobson, or Bacon, or Tarbell, or…? And if each of these are broad generic categories made by multiple different manufacturers, then whose is the best to buy? Purchasing advice sought!)
For a supernatural chiller mixing magic (prestidigitation, legerdemain) with Magic (theurgy, thaumaturgy, mysticism), check out my novel MAGIC: AN OCCULT THRILLER at http://www.amazon.com/Magic-Occult-Thriller-Reed-Hall/dp/1453874836

I'm just getting serious too. I researched this quite a bit and decided:

Bag Type: Malini
Egg: Steve Meyer's Malini Egg
Routine: Ken Brooke & Friends
Video: Steve Meyer's Tutorial (the Ken Brooke Routine)

I have a Fabric Manipulations Malini bag but also have a Hobson on the way so I can compare them.

I like a bag with the same color on the inside as the outside. If the colors are different, it screams liner compartment. Just my opinion.....

I make Malini style bags with a curved pocket in either silk or polyester. The color is consistent inside and out in silk or poly.
About 7.75"wide and 8"deep. Polyester sells for $65 and postage and silk is $90 and postage.I have excellent customer feedback on both the Magic Cafe and onm Facebook page (Jonathan Neal). Experts like Marc De'Souza, Eric De Camps, George Tovar, all prefer my bags. YOu can contact me her via DM

I have a few eggbags as well. Here is what I think:
Fabric Manipulations is great, but you may have to wait a long time to receive the items.

Steve Myers's egg is must buy for egg bag performers. The material of Steve's eggbag feel a bit thicker than that of other brands.Of course it works flawlessly.

Jeff Hobson eggbag is obviously different design with good reasons. I really like the size. Many design ideas are based on Jeff working experience. The only thing you have to consider is that the outside color is different than inside, which is on purpose.

I also have the eggbag sold by late Scott Alexander. The color seems like navy green, which looks very great in my opinion. And the cloth is very smooth and great.
For me, the cloth used in this eggbag is the best. The only drawback is that all are sold out and you may have to check 2nd hand market.

Underthetree, the Scott Alexander egg bags? I made them all! The one you are describing is made of polyester. it was called Hunter Green. I also made the Steve Myers' bags for him. Steve sells both polyester and silk bags. Steve Myers also has some burgundy pin dot polyester bags I made for him that are exquisite!

Then I have to say I really like the eggbag you made.
I really like the texture of Polyester. Hunter green is awesome.
Highly Recommended.

I wish I could get more of that fabric, but the polyester ones are made from vintage materials that I buy ... usually the end of the bolt, which means no more is available (most of the time).

From an entertainment standpoint there is something to be said for the bag that is a combination of the traditional net egg bag and the Tarbell type egg bag. This blend results in an ideal presentation of what has indeed become a true "classic" in Magic.

You can perform virtually all of the moves as in a standard routine, with the added feature of it happening visibly right before the eyes of the spectators! (viewed through the net)

The instruction we have on file is headed "WILSON'S DELUXE VISIBLE EGG BAG". I'm not certain which "Wilson" this is. Please share any details of which you may be aware... Smile

I've seen several great egg bags. I have some Dan Tong Tarbell Bags, similar to Mardo and Sterling bags, which are great and easy to use. The Martin Lewis routine is the best that I've seen. I even adapted the routine with a Hobson bag, a version of a Malini bag. I currently use the Hobson bags. I developed my handling for Malini bags because I wanted a handling that suited how I move.

The truth is---the bag---material and egg dosen't really get you more bookings. It is the routine that you do with the bag and egg that will get you repeat bookings.
Over the years, the egg bag has been a staple in my adult and kid shows. I have had many request to perform that hilarious trick using a egg and bag.
It's all the fun and laughter that have the kids screaming and the parents laughing at the nonsense business that is injected in the performance.
Be creative--think of how you can use the bag and egg to make kids laugh, you will surprise yourself with some of the stuff you would come up with.
Don't copy others, put your personality to the props. You want them to rememember your performance and not that you had a great looking bag and a real looking eggs.

To Ricky's point, my advice would be to just buy a cheap egg bag and work with it. If it works out for you, you will probably end up buying more than one alternative before you figure out what you really want.

That's generally my approach to just about any magic prop purchase, and it has worked out well so far.

Steve Myers Magic has his egg bag on sale right now (4-1-25) in black and red. I'm not positive but they might actually be bags made by JNeal.

See it at https://www.stevemyersmagic.com/store/p6......g.html#/

Hey Harry,

You are correct in that the bags sold on Steve's site are made by JNeal. Jen confirmed it for me the last time I purchased one.
