Hello everyone,
I've been getting into some coin magic recently and would just like to ask a couple of questions. 1. Does anyone know where I can get Modern Coin Magic (4 DVD Set) (https://www.penguinmagic.com/p/1396) as a download? 2. I don't seem to be able to get into the suggested edge palm position by the instructions of bobos modern coin magic. Can anyone help me please? 3. Does it matter where the coin is exactly in downs palm, because from the instructions in bobo's, I don't seem to be able to get the coin in the illustrated drawing. 4. How important is the back palm. Thanks heaps, Hudson52Sleights |

1. Sorry, no. I got it as a DVD set.
2. Bobo's edge palm is where the coin is at a 45-degree angle to your palm, right? (The reason I ask is because I think there is another palm called edge palm...) Try starting by holding the coin between your middle and ring fingers. 3. In a perfect world, the coin would be high in my hand, almost in alignment with my index finger. But when I execute it, it typically rides a bit lower, so that my thumb is kinda pointing between my index and middle fingers. 4. No, but that's just my opinion. However, you may want to invest the time into a healthy back clip. Some people prefer Goshman, but the way my hands are built I usually resort to a deceptive clip between index and middle fingers at the outermost knuckle. (Important to angle the hand a bit; remember, you are using this for just a second or so, and your hand should be in some motion.) Hope this helps. |

Hi Hudson, I’m going to presume you’re at beginner stage with coin magic like myself, I’ve been studying for a couple of months now and really enjoy it.
I’m not sure if MCM is available in download format but my suggestion would be to subscribe to Reel Magic Magazine where you will find J.B. Bobo’s Modern Coin Magic interpreted by Curtis Kam, for £5 per month it’s incredible value! Not only that but you’ll also find Coins 101 by Kainoa Harbottle. I’ll also thoroughly recommend checking out Rick Holcombe’s YouTube channel, he has quite a few effects and routines from Bobo’s and his teaching is fantastic. Good luck |

Yeah, Rick Holcombe has some pretty valuable information on his channel, and I'll be sure to check out the Reel Magic Magazine. If you want, feel free to PM me and tell me a little bit about yourself. I enjoy learning about other magician's progress and insights!

I learnt what Bobo calls the Edge Palm from Hugard's "Modern Magic Manual" - Hugard calls it the Oblique Palm. The book is public domain and you can download it free online.
It's also in Henry Hay's "Amateur Magician's Handbook". although he insists that you need to be able to palm several coins and produce them one at a time. I've never managed that, but I can do a single coin almost automatically. |

Edge Palm is not necessary for coin magic, unless you're going deep into the rabbit hole. Finger Palm and Classic Palm are sufficient to produce miracles. |

Hay's The Amateur Magician's Handbook is by far the definitive resource for Down's Edge Palm, in my opinion. Hay actually takes the time to properly show and explain the mechanics of the hold, and how to get a coin, (and coins) in and out of position.
I use Edge Palm more than any other position, and it is indeed possible to produce a number of coins, completely silently, with due practice. You have much more control over the coins you are holding, compared to the traditional palm. The book dates to the era of Bobo's book, but I think it really is a marvelous tome still today- if one is interested in the foundations of coin magic. Hay/Mussey is an intimate teacher who carefully instructs, instead of just shoveling as many tricks/routines at you as possible. The book is about deeper learning of important tools you will use constantly in a wide range of coin, and other hand magic. It's full of tips and intricacies sadly lacking in the other books of it's day. TAMH also has a brilliant and clear description of Down's Eureka Pass, which makes excellent use of Edge Palm, and incorporates the "two-directional" psychology later used in Sylvester's most excellent toss. In Bobo, Down's magnificent pocket misers dream is obtuse and poorly described. With Hay's concise directions, it is clear that this routine is Down's Masterpiece of coin conjuring.

Hello everyone,
quick update: I have found Modern Coin Magic (4 DVD Set) as a download, the thing is, I don't know if it's a pirate thing. The links here: https://magicmakersinc.com/products/mode......=uniform I think this is legit, but it would be great if someone could verify. Thanks, Hudson52Sleights |

While Magic Makers have a dubious reputation, I think they put out the DVD set.

They did, and it’s a wonderful set. It follows a lot of Bobo’s and is expertly taught by Ben Salinas, a wiz of a closeup man and heckuva nice guy. He happens to be really good at coin magic too, and with his approach, it helped to make the set a tremendous follow along to the famous book. There are other things out there now but I’ve always recommended this set and still do as to a great visual companion to the book.
Good journey with it, 52…and welcome to the Cafe. ![]()

I'd recommend David Roth's DVDs before Bobo, though Ben did a great job on his DVDs.
I've never seen anyone teach the basics as well as David Roth. The best foundation, IMO.

Curtis Kam did a good run through on Reel Magic too. Roth’s vhs tapes got the coin rolling for me.

I recently recommended those Reel Magic vids with Mr. Kam as well.
I wish someone like Jason England would do a similar series for Erdnase.
