I suggest starting with something like a book, Royal Road to Card Magic as this is geared tos beginners in card magic.
Next, visit a magic shop or join a club where you can discuss matters such as different trick decks. Third, if you keep going with card trick or any other magic, you should learn some things without the use of gimmicks or trick decks. You will eventually need some sleight of hand to aid you for the occasions when someone hands you their cards and asks you to do something.

But I don't know how to find the magic shop, would it be in the phonebook, like what section?

Sure, most magic shops are listed in the phone book under magician's supplies. However, a lot of toy stores and department stores carry the Svengali deck. Look in the toy and games sections for Bicycle Magic Cards. Svengali Decks are very easy to find.

What do they mean by setup? what do you do for a setup

I am assuming you are very new to magic. When you get a deck, all will become clear. We don't really discuss methods too much here at the Café. I will tell you, however, that the Svengali Deck is a very common trick deck of cards. They are very easy to work and you can do a lot of magic tricks with them. They are not very expensive.
Setup refers to the cards being in a particular order for the tricks to work. Sometimes, when you buy a new Svengali deck, you will need to put the cards in the correct order before you can use it. It isn't difficult and the instructions will very clearly explain what you must do. |

Thanks rtgreen, yeah I am really new to magic. and yes I should probably buy a deck of some sort all I have is reguler bicycles. I still find it mind boggling how the cards work tho like how they can change to whatever you want jsut by snapping your fingers.
And also I'm just into street magic card tricks, nothing to spectacular but from what ive seen there are a lot of great street tricks out there. I know that you guys arnt aloud to tell me this probably but do the cards work by saying the card out loud? or a chip :S TRUST ME IM VERY NEW as you can tell my questions are very lame |

The cards have been around for years and years. Like I've said before, they are a trick deck of cards. In fact, if you were able to examine the deck you would figure it out right away. There is nothing very complicated about them. Most magic is that way, it plays on what people expect to see and hides methods behind that.

Magic is the appearance that something impossible (sipritualistic) just happened. This adds to the mystery of the performance and that is what the audience pays for. No where is there a "real" magic, even the ancient magicians used skills, misdirection, and gimmicks, but in ancient times it was thought to be real magic because very few could perform it, there were no books and the teachings were verbally handed down. That is how the whole idea of mysticism and spiritualism began. Today we know better and the availability of knowledge for the interested is fundamental. If you are not simply a deletante, and eager to learn the craft to perform, then start with the Sevengali deck to satisfy your cuorisity; but be warned, that once you know how a trick is done you will most likely be disappointed at its simplicity. If you want to really learn then you will need "The Royal Road to Card Magic", less than $10.00, as recommended above and a couple decks of regular poker size cards, and the dedication really want to learn. What ever road you choose I hope that you be happy in your discovery.

Funtyme Magic has a demo video of a Svengali routine in their $1 download section. You can check it out and see how he works with the deck and the effect produced. The demo video is free. If you want the routine it costs a buck.

Hawkntia, I'm a beginner too, and I bought my first Svengali deck about 3 or 4 months ago on ebay, and got the deck and a little book of tricks for about 5 bucks total.
the deck is really great, but use it sparingly!!! If you use it too much, people will want to inspect it, so you should only use it after a sleight of hand/self working routine. if you do too many "impossible looking" tricks, people might suspect you are using a gimmicked deck. good luck to ya!

There are two magic shops around Vancouver. One is called Clowning Around (in Kids Market at Granville Isl.) and the other is called Gizmo's (Metro Town Centre in Burnaby). Get the Svengali deck, it's easy to perform, cheap to buy, and has many different effects you can perform.

Actually I just got back from Gizmoz, just like 5minutes ago. but the magician wasnt there :S I was kinda mad about that cuz I had to take the sky train and a bus to get there and he was late or something.. anyways I picked myself up a Svengali deck and a 101 tricks book.. and I'm going back there maybe friday or something to get some more stuff, so if you guys have any suggestions on some good tricks to buy please tell me cuz I plan on spending a pretty big load of money.

I suggest you save your money for a while. Get to know what you have just bought. The Royal Road to Card magic is a very good investment. It does not cost much but gives you a huge amount of knowledge. Become comfortable with that first. Otherwise, if you spend a lot of money the only thing you will have learnt is that you wasted a lot of money.

Even better than a Svengali deck is a mirage deck. it is very similar to a Svengali deck but has an advantage to it. they both work the same way but you can end cleaner with the mirage deck since you can spread the faces of the deck instead of riffling them.

Hawkntia,
It's perfectly normal to want to spend lots of money to get started in such a fun activity as magic, but definitely consider books. These are a great investment! You get many more effects than just gimmicks and you can read over them and really concentrate on the movements you need to do. It sounds like you're working with cards at the moment. I'd like to suggest The Royal Road to Card Magic and Wilson's Complete Course in Magic. These books will definitely get you on the right track. Most of all, don't forget to have fun!! |
