Hello everyone, do you have any website to suggest for purchasing soft silver coins and soft versions of gaffed coins?
Thanks! |

The best place to buy soft silver coins is from a coin dealer or pawn shop. Ask to see their cull coins. Those are the non-collectible and worn coins that will be sold in bulk to a silver smelter.
Buy extras, then if you're in the USA, send them to either Jamie Schoolcraft or Roy Keuppers. Schoolcraft may or may not accept custom work using your provided coins. Lately, he has not been accepting custom work. Roy Keuppers will, though. For each gaff you want made, buy three additional coins, because the gaff maker will select the best coins to fabricate the gaff, plus if he makes a mistake he will require another coin. If you want a ready-made full gaff coin set, then sign up for Schoolcraft's pre-sale email blast that he sends prior to selling a bunch of gaff sets. Roy Keuppers also sells coin sets that you can specify as soft. Having been down this road more than once, that's my best advice. PS - Once you receive your gaff coin sets, be prepared to soften them further depending on your needs/desires. |

In order to soften the coins further I only ever heard of a method involving sandpaper, but I never tried because I was afraid of damaging the coin. Would you recommend it? do you know any other method? thanks again |

Make that "Roy Kueppers" when you do a Google search.
Although I've never tried it, I think sandpaper would be too rough unless you used a very fine grit. There are also polishing cloths that might work well, although they might not be abrasive enough. I'm sure other Cafe' folks will chime it with some good advice. SETH

The only reason to use "soft" coins is so you can eliminate unwanted noise when doing moves that cause the coins to touch or rub against each other. This applies especially to three fly type moves. Otherwise it may not be necessary.

Soften coins using 400 grit wet sand paper, and follow up with 0000 steel wool.
This is a good tutorial. https://player.vimeo.com/video/37120738?h= I have used this method many times on Morgan silver dollars and Walking Liberty half dollars. |

They are very easy to come by as mentioned by some here in varying ways, but you might also check the buyers forum here as someone might have a set of exactly what you want that they might be willing to sell. A lot of people have soft sets they don’t use much if at all. I’m sure they would provide pics of the coins. Worth a try.
Good journey to you.

I've had wonderful luck on Ebay getting coins that exactly match. With a local dealer, you have a very limited choice of what he has in stock. With Ebay, you can check every so often, have a huge number of coins to choose from, and find a decent price on soft coins, which naturally tend to be less expensive than minty ones.
I think there is a lovely aesthetic with naturally worn Morgans that is hard to beat, along with their quieter voices.

Whenever I need soft coin. Any coin dealer would / should have some.. Last time I went in and asked.. the guy just handed me a big box of all types of coins.. Not their best sell though. LOL.

Some tricks are enhanced by using new looking coins. When I use soft Morgan dollars, there are three reasons. I like the way they look, especially when the borders are not fully worn away ,causing them to look more pleasing when fanned. The lack of sound when rubbed together. And, three or four new silver dollars, in particular 1921 Morgan’s which have very thick rims , will feel bulkier than the same number of soft silver dollars when held in your fist .
