Hey everyone,
I'm looking for a way to fold/roll a silk into a ball (about the size of a tennis ball) and have it open nicely. I bought Rice's Encyclopedia of silk magic but there is so much information I haven't found what I'm looking for yet....if it is even something in there.

There is a chapter in volume 1 entitled: "ways to fold a silk" and they teach lots of different folds for different applications. Several in that chapter sound perfect for your situation!

David Ginn has a nice tutorial video (unlisted) on the John Booth Hank Roll:

(Yes, the final load is a different shape from a tennis ball. More akin to a roll of quarters.)

Here's a video (listed) of David Ginn performing the John Booth Blendo:

I got both video links from this page on his website:

I must be missing something. What are the dimensions of the silk? A tennis ball is huge for a rolled silk!

Maybe roll it around a big sponge ball?

If you know how a silk fountain works, that setup is shaped like an oversized tennis ball.

So, an individual silk could be folded like one of the outer silks from a silk fountain (sometimes the finale silk in the middle is folded differently). I seem to remember that type of fold being called a "trap fold", but I could be wrong.

Sounds like you understand perfectly! Although I haven't figured my problem out yet, this has given me some more ideas to work with. Thanks everyone!!

Jack Chanin had a very good production fold as did Paul Diamond in his silk lecture. Chanin's was in his silk act book. Paul's was on the Videonitcs tapes that I think L&L got the rights to.

Do you know who owns the L & L videos now ? I don't think the whole L & L library of videos is available any more (?). I'm sure it's not financially advantageous to re-release it on physical media discs, but they had already made many of the vids available as downloads before Louis passed on. I would hope there would still be an interest in the L & L and Videontics material available to purchase as downloads.

Paul Diamond's lectures are good stuff.

L&Ls library was acquired by Vanishing, Inc., and I believe you are correct that they have only reissued a portion of the offerings L&L had available.

I use the roll Paul Diamond teaches in Symphonette in Silk for 36 inch silk productions. It uses a rubberband to keep roll tight which comes off during production movement. It is terrific.

The video also teaches how to use a silk winder for huge streamers, flags, and tied silk chains. I bought my winder from Richard about a decade ago. It is built like a tank. Highly recommend.

Magic Mark corrected my faulty memory on another thread; it was actually Murphy's Magic that acquired the L & L products. Sorry for the confusion.
