Hi Magic Peeps,
I'm looking for help on fast effects. Trying to navigate the magic shops online can be hard when you don't know what your looking for. I'm family and children's performer and my hands aren't as nimble as they use to be. I can handle cards but some moves come with new challenges for me. I want to replace a quick effect, something that happens fast like an appearing cane or candle, but not an appearing cane or candle. So many of the performers in the area use them. I'm not looking for routines, just ideas of tricks you are familiar with or maybe just ad you remember seeing. Thank you for your thoughts! -Joe |

Double color-changing silk, I prefer polyester to silk but I'm not sure who sells it. Color changing sash is nice because it's more colorful in the end.
A blendo of some sort with a pop-up (velcro tear away) change bag is visual and active. Rope through Body. I made mine but you can buy one. I also like rope through the wrist as done by Axel Hecklau. https://learnmagicstore.com/stage-magic/......-hecklau You can do it if you have a rope and normal Kid show angles. There is no set up and no fear of a Kid trying to do rope through neck because of your example. Good luck. Mary Mowder |

I notice you have tails. If you have a profonde you could transform a small object like an apple into a silk handkerchief. It does not have to be a Dove.
You can use a paper cone to produce "Million Flowers". Wand from the sleeve. De lites. - Mary |

On Apr 3, 2025, Joe Goode wrote: Are you familiar with the old classic "Lamp Chimney Vanish" (of a handkerchief) ? Fast, visual magic. One good version of it is called 'A Glass and a Silk' in the book 'Magic With Faucett Ross' by Lewis Ganson. Effect: A coloured silk handkerchief is placed into a tumbler then a white handkerchief is stuffed into the mouth of the tumbler to completely isolate the coloured silk in the glass. The performer holds the glass between his hands ,completely covering the opening of the glass, yet the coloured handkerchief vanishes in an instant, leaving the white handkerchief in the glass undisturbed. In Faucett Ross's routine the performer supposedly reproduces the vanished silk handkerchief, but it is immediately noticed that the handkerchief is not the same colour as the one that vanished. Passing this silk through his hand the performer changes it to the correct colour. (dye tube colour change). In the original version of the effect, the silk handkerchief vanished from a lamp chimney held between the performer's hands, hence the name "Lamp Chimney Vanish". There is another fine handling of this classic in the book 'Roy Benson by Starlight' by Levent. Nate Leipzig taught it to his student Roy Benson, and the Benson handling a la Leipzig is what Levent covers in the book. Levent writes: "In this once-standard trick, the silk vanishes from a glass tube used as a "chimney" (cover) on a kerosene lamp, a common household object in the 19th and early 20th century when most homes had no electricity. The Lamp Chimney Silk Vanish appears in print in many old magic books and was at one time featured by numerous magic greats from the distant past, including Harry Kellar, Buatier de Kolta, David Devant, and Nate Leipzig (who used a drinking tumbler, instead of a lamp chimney). It was startling enough to be the opening effect in the full-evening show of the sublime Max Malini." . |

I'll second David Todd's choice! A perfect trick to open the show, and there are few things as visually arresting! As David mentions, all the old timers did this trick but there is nothing old fashioned about it. John Carney devotes several pages to it in one of his books (all his ideas are worth pursuing) and Nathan Coe Marsh is having great success with it everywhere he works!

For that matter, check out Jonathan Neal's own variation on the Lamp Chimney Handkerchief Vanish (which uses a different method to achieve the lightning fast vanish of the silk handkerchief) , which is written up in Jonathan's new e-book 'The Genii Columns 2018 - 2020 ; Eleven Classic Effects For The Stage', available from Jonathan directly via PayPal for $25.00. Or if you are a Genii subscriber you can search through the Genii digital archives to find it. (but kind of nice to have all this excellent material collected into a single PDF)
You can see Jonathan's method in action here at around 0:15 - 0:40 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlLalKFGLWs |

What a great idea. The Lamp Chimney Silk Vanish is not at all dated, but I don't see it performed much anymore, so I think it would be a great addition to your act. Quick, flashy, and magical.
Now I'm wondering what other great tricks are sitting gathering dust unnecessarily?

How about bottle or glass of drink production?
Also, Snap silk production is amazing. |

Lee Alex has created a series of silks / bandanas, which do a visual change in your hands (Leopard Silk Principle).
Love Bandana Star Bandana Pumpkin Bandana Snow Bandana Pocket Bunny Available from many magic dealers. Different from his line of Devil's Bandanas. --- Another idea is a colour changing streamer silk (aka Shake Silk). They have: Black streamer to Rainbow Happy Birthday message Jumbled Numbers Jumbled Letters etc. --- Another idea is the classic Sponge Ball to Square (or a different shape). - Donald
Donald Dunphy is a Victoria Magician, British Columbia, Canada.

I love hearing about these older tricks. The Café is a great resource to keep these alive.
The first book David mentioned is available on Lybrary. https://www.lybrary.com/magic-with-fauce......PB9bd7s_ |
