One of the reasons i'e never got round to learning and performing the 3 shells is that I've always thought that you required a close up mat or similar surface for the effect, however recently someone told me that as long as you use the correct pea you can perform it on any surface, is that correct ?

Also if it is correct would that be the perfect pea that he's referring to ?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

That is pretty much correct. If the pea is soft enough you can use any surface. You can get away with a much firmer pea with a close up mat.

It's a close call with using the perfect pea on a hard surface. If your shells have the Chanin Dip then the perfect pea is fine on a hard surface as would most other peas.

Thanks for your input is there a particular make of pea that you recommend that works well on a hard surface ?

Somebody out there makes a pea that is softer than the perfect pea, but I don’t remember who it is. It might be 3shells.com and I would check in with them.

The Perfect Pea from School for Scoundrels and a good closeup pad make the game easy to play. The dip in the back of the shell also helps. For me all of the three factors are important.

The whole point of the thread was not wanting to use a close up pad so I'm kinda confused by your post as it doesn't answer the actual question.

A well made soft pea like SFS Perfect Pea can be used on any surface.
You certainly don't need a pad.

Also do not overlook the LS Peas by Leo Smetsers, available at Vanishing Inc.
They are softer and therefore easier to use on any surface, including hard surfaces.
They are available at a reasonable price, with no need to buy the shells from them....

Yoder was describing what was, for him, an optimal situation. Without know why Warren wanted to avoid using a mat, it's possible he could adapt achieving the right mix of surfaces based on this feedback (or even decide that using a mat might be better after all).

It is not unusual for us to ask questions assuming a particular solution, and therefore not asking the question that might get us to the best answer.

There was a guy in Germany that made excellent shells, and peas of various levels of firmness. I believe now he is out of the business.

Go on youtube.put in bonaroo grifter to see a guy doing it for real and the surface he uses...
God's grace rocks! It makes a good cups and balls routine look pretty boring in comparison.

Bonaroo Grifter was a gentleman named Gambling Sam. A former member of this site, who went by the name topandball, is also in that video. Sam used a very specific (I won't say "special") surface, and he made his own pea. And of course he used bottle caps.

But to answer the original question, yes, with the right materials you can do it on most anything.

It is always good to slip in a hard pea to throw off the curious. That way it won't work at all
