Are any of the 20 to 30 dollar egg bags worth a look?
Anybody try the ones on Penguin by Bacon Magic? Or the Malini Pro?

TIA

I have zero egg bag experience, so I'm also wondering if there are benefits to Mardo vs Malini. Say, regarding hand size.

I'll spend 80 bucks for a good bag, but in my op I was just wondering if any of the lesser expensive bags are even worth it.

Thanks again

Most if not all of the cheaper bags use a less than ideal fabric for the bag. It is generally acknowledged that SILK 4 ply crepe de chine is the best current fabric for a Malini Egg bag. Occasionally, good quality vintage (no longer made) fabric like RAYON crepe can be found and made into Malini Egg Bags. It has the same wiry texture that silk offersand can be had for a little under $80. But that is rare, as the fabric is difficult to find.

I have a few nice polyester fabric Malini Egg Bags in a shade of blue, that I would sell for $65 each.

Thank you for the reply, I will keep you in mind as I do my searching.

I'm looking at the Bob White and the Ron Bauer routines. Anyone have any other suggestions or comments on these two?

Bob White does a fine job... he was a student of Charlie Miller's (as was I) and adheres pretty closely to Charlie's handling. You can find much of Charlie's routine in the manuscript: "Ken Brooke and Friends on the Malini Egg Bag".

I've found that manuscript at Midwest magic and at Magic inc in Chicago. Never dealt with either of them. Has anyone here? I'm just trying to avoid issues I've had with another online dealer who I won't name, but whose initials are Daytona Magic.

Also, does anyone have any advice on what egg they prefer? Wooden, silicone, blown?
Does it matter?

Magic, INC is the original publisher of the 'Ken Brooke and Friends' manuscript... you won't have any problems with them!

As for a Malini Bag, a lightweight hollowed (blown) egg is the best egg... You'll break a few eggs over time (I lose about 1 a year... it used to be 2, but I worked more back then!), but they are easily replaced. And yes, you can have someone onstage with you hold the egg and for all the rest of the audience... you are working with a 'real' egg!

Next best is a fake egg made by Jeff Hobson or Steve Myers Magic (both online)

Thank you JNeal!

BTW, Midwest Magic is permanently closed.

The wooden eggs are horrible, making the bag jerk. A hollow plastic egg, like the Hobson egg, or a blown egg is preferred. I often use a hollow practice golf ball, especially for kid shows.

Oh, good to know. Thank you for that! All these tips are invaluable and save me a lot of time and money. I've already fallen down the "research rabbit hole" for a few days.

I first got a Malini Egg Bag around 1970, from Magic,Inc. Later, (1978) I met Charlie Miller in Hollywood and learned some finesse with the Egg Bag. I started making Egg Bags for Charlie Miller and myself around 1984. And I've literally made a thousand or more Egg Bags for myself and other individuals as well as select dealers... such as Bob Kohler, Scott Alexander, and most recently, for Steve Myers Magic! More than 40 years of prodcution!

Wow! That's really greeat. I love hearing these stories of long magic careers. I very much enjoyed reading Dick Oslund's book about his life and times in magic. I would be interested in reading more of these biographical accounts.
We've lost so many greats, and they maybe left behind some books of tricks, but their stories of starting out, coming up in the business and relationships they had along the way can be just as interesting, to me anyway, but I love history and hearing the stories. I think the magic community would really benefit from more of this.

I was lucky: I came upon the scene just at the end of the nightclub era... and I was lucky to have worked in a Magic shop in Hollywood where I got to meet all the greats and near-greats. With a performing career of my own starting in 1978 until the present day, Magic has been one long adventure! Vernon, Miller, Henning, Copperfield, Slydini...Wilson, Blackstone, I've known so many!!

The only thought that I would add to this conversation is this:

Even though I completely agree 100% with everything that JNeal is saying about the care, construction and materials used to make a great egg bag (JNeal KNOWS what he is doing and saying!), this is a trick about an EGG, NOT an egg BAG. In other words, the Magic happens with, and the trick is all about........an egg.......put the focus of the trick there.......and you will be fine......"How did he do the TRICK WITH THAT EGG?"

Thank you for that Rainboguy!

Jonathan, I received the bag today! That's got to be some kind of record with shipping. The Ken Brooke booklet is on its way. Thank you again for all the help and for answering all my PMs!

I will! I plan on beginning my studies with it this weekend. I've given the book a cursory look and the bag seems great so far. I will need to put in some time to give it the credit it deserves.

I don't do much "stand up" magic, but there are several open mic type nights in my area and my goal us to start going to these regularly to perform one or two tricks and get my chops. It should be fun.

I'm focusing on several classic tricks.

6 card repeat
Cut and restored professor's nightmare
Silk to egg
Egg bag

And a few more.

I'll check back and keep you posted.
