Okay...here is where I am...I'm presently in Virginia packing up all my magic for a move to San Antonio Texas...BUT I HAVE A PROBLEM...I don't think having too much magic is a problem but right now I'm a bit overwhelmed on the best ways to organize it...to be brief..here's a list of most of the coin magic I have found:
I have found 4 or 5 Scotch and soda effects...some magnetic some not I have a nice handful of kennedy halves with 2 or 3 expanded shells A handful of replica Morgan dollars with Shells 2 0r 3 Hopping half sets a few copper Silver coins a few unidentifiable coins and tricks (apparatus) My biggest question is this...What is the best way to keep all of the above organized. It's easily a few hundred dollars of coin magic (maybe more) I purchased duplicates because I lost track of the first sets I purchased... Help, tips, hints and ideas would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.. Thanks to all in advance!!! |

I use cardboard egg cartons to store my coin sets. I cut off the carton’s lid, so it’s always open.
An old freezer ice tray might work too, if it’s one that makes fairly big ice cubes. A few of these cartons fit side by side very nicely inside fairly shallow drawers, for very quick and very easy access. And it keeps the coins very organized — one specific coin set, or type of gaff, per egg (or ice cube) compartment. Copper Silver Brass goes in the spot where one egg would go. 2 Copper 1 Silver goes in where the egg next to it would be. Chinatown Half goes in the next available spot. Then a Cigarette Thru Coin in the next spot. The next spot holds a Scotch & Soda. Beside it is a spot holding a Hopping Half set. The spot next to that holds a folding coin. Other spots separately hold expanded shell sets, copper/silver sets, etc. You get the idea. As you acquire more coin sets, just add more egg cartons, as needed. If you wanted to, you could even find ways of making little labels for the bottom of each compartment, to help keep track of what goes where if you take some sets out.

Go to Target, Big Lots or a similar type of store and take a look at some women's jewelry boxes. Ideally there should be a few separate drawers, slots and other compartments to store your coin stash. These boxes usually come in a few different sizes, so see what works for you and perhaps get one that's a little bigger than what you presently need, to handle any future purchases. The one I have is also able to accommodate larger things like Okito Boxes, Stack of Quarters, Nest of Boxes, and so on.
You can also get clear double-sided vinyl sleeves at any coin shop (or on Amazon). Although originally intended to protect coins, they are also great for keeping related coin gimmicks together (think Scotch & Soda, CSB, C/S sets, Chinatown Half, etc.). SETH

I use a wood box made for tea bags - 12 compartments. Each set is also in a drawstring bag.
But, when I was performing I used leather wallets with multiple pockets.

https://a.co/d/8cOoGNk If you don't have coin purses for each set, Michael's sells plastic trays with clear round screw top containers meant for holding beads and other small items. They're perfect for holding half dollar size coins and they fit in the above case's sections nicely. |

Thank you all for your suggestions...Can't really beat the price of Egg cartons...But I've decided to go with those medium sized 44 drawers of hardware organizers - not too expensive and they appeare to be exactly what I'm looking for...Thank you all again..

My partner Tom and I once used a hardware organizer box with lots of drawers for small magic items.
We had coins in some drawers and some collectible matches and lit match productions, etc, in others. Add time, and it was a BIG mistake. The coins all showed signs of corrosion. I'm assuming it was the flash paper and matches that caused the problem but we're not sure. Be careful what else you put in the drawers. Likewise, don't leave coins stacked. they will oxidize unevenly. I know it is a pain, but I think you should invest in the kind of cloth that real silverware is wrapped in or use Coin-Collecting gear meant to protect coins. Label every coin, you think you'll remember, but you plan to live a long time. Use the commercial name, so if you need instructions, you'll know what you're looking for. Write down if it is magnetic or a shell or...? These coins are meant to be deceptive. They are. - Mary |

Mary, your mention here of a “hardware organizer box” reminded me of when I was a kid first getting into magic, me and my good buddy & esteemed card man, DOC formerly of the Cafe, we kept all our magic stuff, coins, cards, wands, closeup, etc., in an old metal fishing tackle box that also had many compartments to it. I remember when we found it in a basement, we spray painted it brown. Every week we took a turn keeping the old box full of magic to practice our tricks. Today, they have some really nice ones out there, mostly made of more flexible & lighter plastic. Man, those were the days.

Though portability has its appeal, I’m using the top (thin) drawer of my dresser. Everything’s laid out, it’s protected from dust, and most importantly it’s more or less kept in sight and always available. I took the advice about keeping a guitar out of its case, always available for a few minutes plucking, instead of having to decide to unpack it, and pack it up after. In-sight, in-mind, in-hands. Just don’t yank the drawer open.

I finally decided to organize all the stuff I had in my closet. I had small boxes, and labeled each item as it went in the box, plus a typed inventory list corrisponding to each numbered box. Didn't get it all done, but enough that my closet is more organized. I found that I have a lot of stuff I really don't need, and will eventually put that stuff up for sale in the hopes that someone else might be able to make good use out of it.

Some great advice here! I recently got back into coin magic after many years away, and happy to say most of my coins and gaffs look to be in great shape. Some of the English pennies are a little tarnished now, but most of the silver is fine. I kept everything in pouches or purses divided into sets, e.g. soft Morgan shell set along with C/S coin, soft Barber shell set, soft Morgan Ramsey stack in its cylinder etc. I'm trusting that most of the silver will return to its original look once handled regularly.

Roy Kueppers has a leather coin wallet without plastic. Not sure about the coins rubbing when folded, but it’s an option.

Sounds like you have a lot of duplicates, obsidian, I'm surprised no one has suggested that you sell some of these here at the Cafe in the 'Tricks & effects for sale or trade' forum. You'll generate some extra cash, pare down your magic collection (and storage needs) and likely make another magician happy in the process. I had a lot of different sets of color-changing knives, and finally sold all of the ones but my absolute favorites, which was liberating in a strange way. Now I need to do the same thing will all my Himber wallets.
