Thanks Dr. Rubenstein, great to hear what David Roth always performed. Of course his flurry and shelled coins across. But this is the first time I heard of Rip-O being a favorite. sounds like a great trick. Unexpected restoration of hanky. It was available on this: pal #18 video David Roth Coins and ... but no longer available from Penguin. According to an index online, Rip-O is on volume 12 of the New York Coin Magic Seminar DVDs. This is a first, to hear something that Roth did, that his audiences loved, that I had never heard about, and one of his crowd favorites. Thanks so much!

He used to do his Karate Coin and Eraser Coin as bits when the magicians in NY would all get together at the Governor's Cafeteria on Saturdays after Tannens closed. But what I remember most was his deep back clip coins across. He stole two coins into deep back clip to get two ahead. It really made an impression on me because he was so natural, and I made him put it on the NYCMS dvd series! It was really for magicians (he could have done it for anyone, but his coins across with ] was his worker coins across. I think he also did his coin in bottle with the bottle turning inside out, because when I cleaned out his apt. after he passed, I found about 8 prepared bottles on his kitchen counter. It was interesting, because in the last few years before his death he couldn't perform. First there was Covid, but he also had bad arthritis in his fingers and his knuckles swelled up, impeding him from doing the type of magic he loved (that may have happened before Covid, but with the passing of the years I can't remember). David really didn't really keep his place tidy, and it is possible that the bottles were made years before and just sat on his kitchen counter.

I saw David lecture in London in 1995 and he performed the coin in bottle... the climax and reveal of the inside out bottle really kicked everyone in the pants. It was a great evening. He spoke about how much of a pain in the a*s it was to hand make them using clear yacht varnish and a chopstick to position the label. I still have mine.

Finding or figuring out some of the props is part of the fun of Roth material. I remember searching thrift stores for just the right little dollhouse table for something in his book.

However, the original “label in the bottle” was marketed by Alex Lourido and is called "OSMOSIS".

This thread has gotten off track, but Roth claimed originality of the effect. He released it on the A-1 Multimedia video series (Expert Coin Magic made Easy - Magic with Folding Coins and Specialty Gaffs) which came out in 1995. He explained the routine on the video except for the part about the label turning inside out. I do not know the date of his lecture notes where it is taught. In Roth’s book it says he used a Heineken bottle to perform the coin in bottle effect, but does not describe the inside out bottle. Roth was reluctant to release a lot of his stuff, and in fact, had to change the ending for his showpieces in the book because he didn't want to release a secret lapping device he used, but never published. By the way, a quick google search dates Osmosis to 2003, years after Roth's video.

Roth definatley performed and taught (and sold) the bottle routine in '95. I have the bottle but can't for the life of me find the notes.
It wasn't in the lecture he performed in London in '90 (Ron MacMillans convention) so I guess it must have been between those two dates when he decided to make all the bottles and include it in a new lecture.
