Thanks, I’ve got the D’Adarrio rosin coming in this week. I assume this is for hands, or do people apply it to the coin?

A little goes a long way. Harder rosin, like Hidersine #3, scrapes off like a powder. That’s what you want. You don’t want rosin residue caked into the edging crevices. |

The D’Addario says “less dust”, which is likely what you’re talking about. I’ll try the hard Hidersine when it comes back in stock. Thanks.

At this point, Roy Kueppers is the only coin gaff craftsman that can remill old coins. I can't think of anybody else offhand. Schoolcraft can do it but appears to be in semi retirement?
Roth had fairly small hands like I do. When you have small hands, classic palming silver dollar sized coins isn't really possible. |

He has changed his business model away from one-off custom work to offering specific gaff sets that he offers every eight weeks or so. Akin to what Todd Lassen was doing. So, if one wants remilled coins from Schoolcraft then one will have to buy a Dean’s Set when offered. It does seem as though Roy is the only USA gaff maker who will do re-milling on a custom basis. Even then, in my business dealings with Roy, he really preferred to sell a coin set with remilled edges than to re-mill my personal coins. |

Just for context- I can CP a Morgan, but not well enough to trust it in a performance. I mostly do it as a personal challenge like some of the Erdnase stuff.

I have always used a dollar size Chinese coin in my pet effect, MB Transpo PLUS, so it helped me greatly for my hands to always be comfortable with it, switching between half dollar size back and forth throughout the effect. And as such, whenever I do something with dollar size coins, like my FlySki, it all just feels like regular coin magic to me.
And I don’t regularly CP a dollar coin, mostly FP it for deceptive holdout in Liwag Subtlety as I hold a coin at the fingertips…It’s like the old Star Trek cloaking device, if you remember that episode. ![]()

‘Sick” Morgan replicas arrived from eBay. Much better than I expected. About half the weight of authentic ones, and a dull pot metal appearance with no wear. Edges are very similar to my soft coins, so I guess mine aren’t as bad as expected. If I had no authentic coins, I’d be tempted to live with these alone.
Photo uploads are pretty limited here, unfortunately. |

Glad you got them so fast, and that you are happy with them. And yeah, as I have been saying for years now here, replicas are pretty darn good and the price makes it even better for what we use them for in coin magic. Honestly, it’s all you need. But I understand the purists as to real coins, I had those too and decided early on that good replicas were more than good enough. Enjoy them!
*Oh, and at some point when you get down the road a’piece, really look into the SICK dvd, some absolutely great stuff in there. It’s mostly a lot of the tricks Roth taught, but kicked up a notch or two as to style and presentation, which I remember doesn’t dwell a lot on patter. That guy from SICK is an amazing worker and just blew coin magic away years back with his unique approach to the art. Good deal all the way around on this. ![]()

Does SICK have more stand up stuff?
Whenever people ask where to go next video-wise after Roth's DVDs I think something with stand-up since so much in those requires a table.

Thanks, Mb. I described them as pot metal, but that’s not fair. They’re certainly not like the cheaper jumbo coins and do have a bit of a sheen on them. And the sound is perfectly acceptable if not mixed with real ones. They’re also all dated 1921, if that’s important to anyone. I’ll definitely take a look at the DVD, even though my imagination is far more capable than my execution! Be good to see what they suggest with the Chinese coins.

Excellent.
Also thanks for the reminder to clean out under my car seats.

I’ve been trying out the D’Addario Kaplan rosin and it’s working great, enough that I’m not ruling out classic palm with the dollars. And I’m not pursuing the re-edging idea. Thanks for the suggestions!

As an interesting aside, when I cleaned out David Roth's apartment I found English pennies thst were remilled. My guess is that David didn't want to take any chances, and used them when his hands felt dry.

Correction - I meant milled, as the edges of an English penny are smooth. Sorry

As I understand, milling was done to prevent crooks from shaving the precious metals from around the circumference, a hard thing to spot otherwise. So I guess English pennies didn’t have much preciousness to bother. Come to think of it, neither do our nickels & pennies (RIP).

Ok, I’m here to tell ya, you CAN take this rosin thing too far! I got a bit dust-happy and though the edges are very grippy, the faces of the coins are definitely gummy against each other. Yeah, well, I’ll be rubbing these down to find a happy minimum. Onward!
