I have an old effect that uses a solid piece of rope that is multi colored meaning 12" are white, then 12" blue, then 12" red etc. The rope has faded over the years and I'm looking to replace it. Any ideas on how to make a multicolored rope like this?

Thanks Al. I have patriotic ropes but this isn't what I'm looking for. I need a solid length of rope with 5 colors 12" apart. I'm assuming I need to dye a white rope but not sure how to go about do that.

Based on memory alone from almost 70 years ago (possibly an early Genii article), you should use sizing first
to keep dye or paint from running. New paints may require different chemicals, but simple starch used to work for cotton. (washed out later) I did a single color by putting acrylic paint on a sheet of paper, then rolling the prepared rope across it for a smooth edge. Made it stiff, though. Not sure about rope made from other materials such as jute or nylon. Actual hemp might work since folks were able to dye it successfully 5000 years ago. Yet, the probably dyed the yarn first, then made the garment. Guess you may have to experiment a bit with modern materials. Each type of dye or paint may chemically react differently.

David, that would work as far as the colors are concerned but not sure if it would work with the effect. I'll give it a try though.

Get yourself some tie dye and re-dye the rope,or use fresh cotton rope.
You can get more information on tie dying if you google it. |

I realize the original topic here was about replacing the colored ropes used in a specific effect that Dave Scribner was looking for, but I'm wondering if anyone knows of any other good options for obtaining colored cotton rope other than undertaking a DIY dye job on the rope? I'm aware of colored nylon rope , but I'm looking for the soft, cotton rope that has typically been sold in magic shops as "magician's rope".
Penguin and Vanishing Inc (and other dealers) list colored rope (red, blue, yellow, green) from "Mr. Magic" and "Uday Magic", which I believe are both based in India. If you've used either or both of these colored ropes from Mr. Magic or Uday, can you say if there any substantial difference between the two, in terms of the quality? I had a store credit from Penguin so I ordered a hank of the Mr. Magic yellow cotton rope. It's just "ok", not great, with many rough, frayed areas along the length of the rope. It is only 3/16" - 1/4" thick. A bit disappointing. Penguin's description: "Looking for thick, high-quality rope for your Cut and Restored or other rope routines? Mr. Magic Cotton Rope is the perfect solution!" I would not say this rope by "Mr. Magic" is thick or high-quality. Is the colored rope by Uday any better ? ![]() https://i.imgur.com/TCzkGAz.jpg Are there any better sources for colored cotton rope ? Searching online I found Everlast Daffodil Yellow Coloured Cotton Magician's Rope, 10mm Diameter from a U.K. company called Rope Source UK , which looks good, but their shipping cost to the U.S.A. is quite high (and may be even higher now with the new tariff structure) https://rope-source.co.uk/product/daffod......iameter/ Rope Source UK has the Everlast cotton rope in both 6mm and 10mm thickness in a variety of colours. Does anyone know of a U.S. magic dealer who imports this rope from the U.K. ? or a similar high-quality colored rope ? Maybe I should look into the DIY dye-ing option ... https://rope-source.co.uk/product-catego......n-ropes/ . |
