Hi folks,
This routine of Mr. Gallo's ("Forth and Back" on his Siamese Coin DVD, with instructions written by Stephen Hobbs) does nearly everything I want it to: The four coins start at the four corners, end up under one card, and -- important to me -- spectators *see* that all four coins have arrived under that one card. Then the coins suddenly reappear at the four corners. My only concern is the gaff. I'm curious to hear from people who do this routine: do specs ever feel that there's something strange about the way a coin is lying on top of another coin? That concern of mine made me wonder: Can the same effect be produced by using, not a gaff, but an extra coin? I know the "Matrix" part can be done that way, as Al Schneider has noted when describing his friend Chris Faye's routine. For my purposes, though, I'd like the four cards to stay in place, not be laid to the side; that is, I don't want a card to be discarded each time its coin disappears from under it. Does someone have a trick that satisfies the criteria I mentioned?: reverse matrix in which all four coins are visible at the end of the assembly, cards stay in place, and an extra coin, not a gaff, is used? If this thread wanders into discussions of method, I'll start a new thread in Secret Sessions. Thanks for your help, Bob |

In Rubinstein Coin Magic, there are three Reverse Matrix routines, one with 4 coins, one with 4 different coins, and one with 4 cojns and only two cards. No gaffs (although the Siamese coin or 2 coin gaff is great for many routines and is used in my commercially available magnetic Coins routine. All the routines I mentioned are not only found in Rubinstein Coin Magic, but on the NYCMS dvd series, and on other dvds/downloads I have put out (1986 lecture , Penguin Live, etc :

Thanks, Mike, for these links. All beautifully done -- no surprise there -- but not what I'm looking for.
The three matrix routines on your videos all have what I think is called a "backfire"? -- where the audience never sees the four coins together. I'm looking for a routine where the audience sees all four coins under the "leader" card before they suddenly return to their corners. And I'm looking for a gaffless version -- though an extra coin would be fine. Bob |

The only matrix routines I have seen like that are barehanded ones (although, of course that doesn't mean that there isn't one which employs cards as cover, I am just not familiar with those). You might want to do a search on YouTube to find one that matches what you need. Let us know if you find any!

Love the CA, but you have to have all the references in order to look up the one you are looking for. This may narrow it down a bit (although I am sure there are others on YouTube as well)

Thanks for taking the time, Mike. I love Ackerman's warm, relaxed style. What he does in this video is exactly what I'm looking for -- so now I have to find my copy of Las Vegas Karma and see whether his handling is in my reach.
Thanks again, Bob |

Korean magician Mr. Pearl has a nice explanation of Marlo's Simplex Reverse Matrix. (The latter was published in, I think, Harry Lorayne's Apocalypse. By the way, does any one know why Harry gave his periodical that name??)
https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/close-......-matrix/ Here's another one that fits my criteria: https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/coin-m......-matrix/ All three of of these reverse matrices fit my criteria. But -- I was hoping that, by adding an extra, secret coin, the "reverse" part could be made easier. So far I haven't found such a thing. *Maybe* after studying these other routines, an idea will come to me. |

Hi Marion,
Thanks for the link. The trick at about 3:09 is a backfire, so not what I'm looking for. But Ryan Hayashi is always worth watching! The "just hands" coin assemblies are amazing, I agree. I prefer the ones with cards because I find them more mysterious: I like the idea of things "occurring under the cover of darkness." But, as you said, each to his own. Bob |
