Hello...
I need some help with my daycare show. How much should I charge for a 40 minute show. What effects should I do to fill 40 minutes. Thanks! |

I live in Cincinnati OH so what I charge may be too little for your area. I charge my minimum of $125. If it is over 1 hour it is $175. or $50 per hour over one hour extra.
Remember day care centers are classed as CORPORATE accounts and therefore can pay more than the regular party rates. My party rates are still 125 for an hour up to 1.5 hours. Peter |

Now that would be true with chain daycare centers. However, most daycares are not chain operations, they are single units and on a budget. Sammy Smith puts out a great book on this subject called Confidential Day Care Booking Manual and you can find it here:

If you do it when the older kids are present then you would do your normal kidshow presentation. However if you do it when the older kids are in school and just dealing with the preschoolers the show should be simpler and more visual. Hope this helps. Martin

Martin, I respectfully disagree with you and stand by my original thought that day care centers are a business and should be priced as such.
The smallest day Care that I do has 10 kids in every day. The average charge here in Cincinnati is about $80 per child per week with some being as high as $125 per child per week. But we will use the average. That's 10 kids X $80 = $800 a week. Take out cost of lunch for ea child at $3 per day x 5 days x 10 kids = $150 so that is $650 profit per WEEK. They can afford me. Well Peter you have your right to your opinion, but you forgot:
Rent Phone Electric Insurance Professional Fees Directors Salary Salaries of any additional Help I'm sure I haven't covered all the expenses. I don't even approach the Daycares under 30 enrollment. Generally their response is they don't have a budget for your show so you have to pitch it as a field trip that they charge the parents for to cover the cost of your show. They don't take the money out of their budget. I charge $95.00 for day care shows and do a 30 minute show. I also live in a town of 74,000 in Northeast Texas and Ray is in a small town in another part of Texas where he may have to feel around for an acceptable rate. I've been to Cincinnati, I wish my market was so big. Unfortunately there isn't a hard and fast quotable rate or someone could just write a book of entertainment fees and our lives would be so much simpler. As to effects: I've used: Soft Soap Super Frog David Ginn's Snake Can Routine (be careful though little kids don't like their hand kept in a change bag, they think it disappeared) Ali Bongo's Monster Hat Blooming Bouquet (makes even 3 and 4 year olds go nuts) I've used a lobster puppet for Sammy Smiths Alice the Alligator Routine I finished my Easter show's by producing my rabbit at the end and let the kiddies pet the rabbit while I pack down and collect my check from the director. You can keep them occupied for a long time that way. Oop's I think I just gave my whole show away. Sammy Smith's material is best for the younger set and David Ginn's material works when you have the older set in attendance. Martin

The daycare business is just like any other business, they have many expenses. In the larger centers most often the biggest expense is labor because of the staff to child ratio.
If you charge 10 kids $125. that’s $12.50 per child. (Is the show that good?) If you charge 30 kids $95 that’s $3.16 per child. (Is it worth this?) If you charge 50 kids $100 that’s $2.00 per child. (Looking better.) Tom A quick add on: I’m not saying you shouldn’t charge one price for all, you probably should. But one of the first things you need to find out is how many children they have because at times you may need to do some adjusting on the price especially the smaller ones. Tom

Well actually it is worth the $3.16 per child.
We don't always have the choice to just book the big centers. In my area there are very few centers that large. At today's gas prices with a full size chevy van the 250 mile round trip to Dallas just isn't worth it unless I have 2 days of 4 shows a day bookings in the area. I wish all my shows could be in large day care facilities. Martin

Martin, You have a good point about the smaller towns. And true, I have only done a couple of shows for that small a day care, usually the centers have 30 or 40 kids.
I come in as Peter and during the show I become Paddy The Clown so the children who are afraid of clowns see me putting on my make up and when I step into my big oversized pants and pull them up over my street clothes the kids all cheer because a very non frightening clown is there. Love your show, it is great, I use a lot of Sammy Smith's stuff and David Ginn's has a lot of kid show things also. BTW I tried my rope magic routine on the kids last show, didn't go over at all with the younger ones and had ro revise show in middle to bring their attention back. Peter |

I have to agree with Martin. In my area, I can get more money from a birthday party than I can from a daycare or preschool. They choke at my regular price. They don't want to pay any more than $100 -$125 per show, which isn't the worst price in the world, but that is well below my birthday party rate.
With all the state requirements daycares have to abide by, they run on very close margins. The idea of spending more than $150 for a show really shocks them. Michael |

WOW Michael, here in Cincinnati OH I can get $125 for a b'day party and occasionally up to 150. What are your party rates in Knoxville.
BTW I was in Knoxville seeing a girlfriend last yeay and went into a small magic shop in a strip mall south of town. Don't remember the name but really nice people. Peter |

The state requirements on daycares do make it hard to turn a big profit. I know, I own one. It helps to let em know they’re getting more than just a show. Promotes value for the center by letting parents know their center is different, creates word of mouth advertising, possible newspaper coverage, etc.
Winking at a couple of the teachers helps too. LOL But seriously, working daycares for a hundred dollars is time well spent, IF you use them to get leads for other shows. The parents in daycare know each other well, they do talk and all of them want the same for their child as the rest there. If you do a birthday party for one child that goes there the whole daycare knows about it. You get plenty of advertising. I have been a magician and a daycare owner (130 kid size) for a very long time. I helped write the daycare laws. I too have been doing daycares for over 10years now and they just don't have the funds to pay the big money. I get a lot more for birthday's .
I live in Atlanta the going rate for my bd show is 250.00 and the daycare is 150.00 Daycares are a great place to get birthday business. And if you did 4 daycares a day that is not bad money for a weekday. The daycare business is a tough busiess to own. The profits are not as big as we think. Their insurance aleast in GA/ is VERY high. I will give you a tip for daycres. a lot of the chain daycares only have a credit card. So it is a good idea to set up a credit card machine for your business. If there is one chain that will not hire anyone unless they can pay with credit card. Ken |

In my area, my daycare shows are currently $200 for a 30 minute program and $250 for a 45 minute program. My birthday parties have been $225 for a year or so, but since most parents are now saying "It's $250, right?" when they go to pay me, I'm about to go to $250. My daycare programs are a mix of magic and music, and have translated into my becoming the music enrichment person at three daycares, some with several branches, on a year-round or school-year basis (one once a month year-round, one twice a month year-round and one every Monday & Tuesday during the school year). The daycares are basically my weekday "job" and then I do birthdays on weekends. With the occasional store or shopping mall gig thrown in.
It depends on the area when it comes to pricing, I guess, and as my demand has grown, so has my price. The preschool & daycare directors have their own grapevine, and I mainly get my work through word of mouth. I love working with the daycares! |

Many people open a daycare thinking there’s a ton of money to be made quick. Many fail with the business because of the time it takes to build a reputation, state laws, or the lack of funding to survive the first few years. But now there also can be big money in them but it doesn’t come quick. I’m well satisfied with the money I make now as an owner but it wasn’t easy and it took a long time to reach this point. But to most, myself included, money comes second, it’s the love of dealing with children that keeps us going.
The same is true for magicians, don’t go into it just for the big money, the daycare people can spot the ones who enjoy their work and will invite them back often. The longer you do it the easy it gets and if you do it long enough while learning all all the little tricks the money will come. Almost forgot my question, Does anyone work the birthday parties at the daycare? Tom

A fair number of my birthday parties are for children from my daycare programs, and often I do a party for one child for a few years in a row then entertain at their younger siblings' parties. I occasionally get calls from the daycares saying a mother was trying to get in touch with me about a party (most daycares have a policy of not giving out phone numbers, but they will notify me if someone is trying to get in touch with me, and it's always for a gig). I don't actively promote the parties there, feeling that too much pushing would be inappropriate, but have left my brochures with the office and I think most parents know I do parties because they saw me at one or heard it through the grapevine. Also, the teachers or directors will often say, "He does birthday parties, too!" so that helps.

I have a couple audio-tapes by Dave Risley and Ralph the Great where they talk about entering the daycare market. They mention a real good angle is to do the "Magic Workshop" where the students are taught how to do magic for their friends; students are also given the supplies (real inexpensive stuff like fortune fish, balancing eagle, Ed Harris Jumbo Bill, etc). I think this would work real well.

Sammy Smith has the Day Care Manual and audio cassette on working Daycares. I recomend this tape it is really good. I have in my collection and have used it many times. I am working on my new daycare show. Going to be doing a mailing soon.

The fees I charge for a day care shows are about the same as for my birthday show. Most day cares that book me however usually only get me in once or twice per year for special events like Christmas parties. Their budget for a Christmas party would be higher than a show on a regular day throughout the year. If I was wanting to do more day care shows throughout the year I think I would have to reduce my fee for them.

I routinely run summer promotions to keep me busy during the weekdays. This can go from $85-95, but there are stipulations such as time of day they book, week they book, etc.
For instance, I'll run a promotion for a lower priced afternoon show because I tend to book mornings first. This encourages my shows to spread out, allowing me to offer more varied time slots to those who come along later. I go for quantity, and each year I have been getting more and more. This summer I did 50 daycares, some small, some large. Some chains, some indep owned. I raise my base price each year, but the people I book previously almost always rebook, despite the high turn over rate. Put together a mailing list from the yellow pages and start mailing out some offers, go from there. |

My last one I charged $160 and was offered more. I did one for my boss (owns 3 daycares) and did it for $100.
I offered two packages to the $160 one and she chose the deluxe one. As I have been concentrating on the school programs, haven't messed with daycares now. Did send out many mailers earlier this year. I hope they keep them on file:)
