I saw yesterday that Schoolcraft was pre-ordering dollar-sized CSB gaffs. This led me to wonder if the gaff is a bit risky at that size... particularly the hole in the Chinese-style coin. Wouldn't it be a bit obvious that there is not the expected thickness? Am I over-thinking it? Anyone have that size CSB care to comment?

I do not have any commercial CSB set in dollar size. In my opinion CSB works better in half dollar size. Just like flippers works better in half dollar than dollar size.
However I can combine this kind of set by using my existing coin gaffs. This is using an expanded Chinese brass shell and the C/S coin is thick as a normal dollar size coin. In this set the Copper coin transforms to a Silver and Chinese coin. I know in the original routine, a Silver coin transforms to 2 foreign coins but in my country all of those are foreign coins anyway so doesn’t matter if the copper coin is actually THE coin that changes. I think Tango’s dollar size CSB is also using this same approach. The good thing is that the edge of the Chinese brass shell is almost the same color as copper so in that way this works perfectly. I have the Mark Mason CSB set with Chinese Coin and Morgan Dollar. I think it is an awesome set. I actually had the smaller walking liberty set and upgraded to the Morgan Dollar size. I prefer the Morgan Dollar size.

I've used/handled/owned a few CSBs
Dollar size is fine. They're not going to worry about thickness around the hole. Too busy wondering where the silver coin went and they *know* it didn't have a hole. If you're still worried about the hole, have him make a 2C1S or a solid CSB for you. ![]() ![]() |

I have a dollar-sized CSB set made years ago by Todd Lassen. I used that for quite some time. But when Todd passed away, and his work became collector's pieces, I ordered a replica set for CBS. I was antsy about trucking around Todd's set. It also had sentimental value. (BTW: Pressley Guitar, the inventor of the gimmick coin, named it "CBS". I know this for a fact.) I heard that Johnson Products renamed it Copper, Silver, Brass when they started making it. (Don't know that for a fact.) Anyway, the replica set by Oliver Magic is very nice. The contrast in appearance of the coins is excellent. Just one guy's opinion. Regards, Gerald BTW: Wow! That's quite a collection! Great! Keep going, inigmntoya! |
