Over the next few days I’ll be sharing my notes with you on Stuart Palm’s book Psychic Entertainment.
The book has over 600 pages and I tend to write a lot, so expect many posts about it. I hope this helps someone decide whether or not they should get it. Let’s begin. FOREWORD The book opens with an excellent foreword written by Richard Webster. It's not just a polite introduction; it's a true gesture of legitimation from someone whose career already speaks for itself within the world of mentalism and psychic entertainment. Webster knows exactly what he wants to say and finishes by leaving the impression that this is not just another volume on mentalism—it's a personal, serious, and well-founded contribution from someone who, through a lot of hard work, has managed to become a leading figure in the world of mentalism. WHAT IS PSYCHIC ENTERTAINMENT? In two pages we get his vision on what Psychic Entertainment is, as well as a summary of what we can expect throughout the book. AN INTRODUCTION - WHO AM I? The author presents himself as a tall, eccentric, and visually striking American performer with a dandy style and spiritual and aesthetic influences. A long narrative about his family origins follows: Paternal side: German, connected to the military, boats, and the arts. Maternal side: Scottish, with a rural background from the southern US. Childhood: in Dunedin, Florida, among a rich visual and emotional environment. He describes very vivid and cinematic memories, revealing early on traits of imagination, artistic sensibility, and a fascination with symbolic objects, rituals, and mysterious environments. Childhood, Creativity, and Dyslexia He explains that he had a high IQ but also dyslexia, which made him gravitate toward the arts, fantasy, and symbolic worlds. First Contact with the Occult The foundational moment of his connection to psychic entertainment occurred at a family friend's house, where as a child he experienced: Ouija board sessions, "Light as a feather, stiff as a board," Card tricks, Atmospheres charged with imagination and mystery. These experiences became a permanent mark on his artistic identity. First Contact with Magic and Mentalism - David Copperfield and television. - Doc’s Magic Shop in Gatlinburg. - The first mind-reading tricks that gave him a sense of "real power." A growing interest in tarot, astral projection, and spirituality, encouraged by his "hippie" aunt. Artistic Training He studied at prestigious art schools, traveled, explored cultures, and discovered performance art as a way to express himself. New York, September 11th, and the Start of a Real Career After university, he moved to New York in 2001. He experienced 9/11 in Brooklyn, witnessed an abrupt change in the world and his work, and ended up working in a bar—which became the perfect laboratory to develop real mentalism routines with a "raw" audience: - Center tears, - Quick readings, - His own stacks, - Visual close-up tricks, - Creating an aura of authenticity and mystery. - Clients began associating him with David Blaine, and he discovered the term "mentalist" for the first time. He later met a professional performer who showed him the Invisible Deck, guiding him toward the magic community and Tannen’s. - His friendship with Adam Cardone and his mentor Jeff Sheridan. - Weekly visits to the New York Magic Studio and a trip to the hospital. He goes on for a few more pages describing his journey to where he is today. If you enjoy a good story and are interested in the author's background, this chapter is a fascinating read. And these are the first 40 pages. Helder

WHERE IS PSYCHIC ENTERTAINMENT FOUND?
It covers 9 places where psychic entertainment routines work best: At Informal Gatherings, Mingling Entertainment for Events, The Psychic Entertainment Table, Restaurant & Bar Entertainment, The Psychic Mystery Show, Stage Performances, Virtual Performances, Psychic Home Parties and Psychic Fairs. These 12 pages were great. PSIGERITTA A symbolic cocktail for 'psychics,' made to stimulate the mind and provide energy. Page 63. SIGN READING The Importance of Using Dates, Astrology, and Personal Elements. The author argues that the strongest material in mentalism/psychism involves focusing on the participants. - Birth dates are a powerful gateway to an emotional connection. - Even those who don't believe in astrology know their sign and react to information about it. - The goal: use dates, signs, days of the week, celebrities, numerology, etc., to enrich performances THE MNEMONIC PEG SYSTEM Introduction to Mnemonic Systems Before teaching the astrology techniques, the author explains a foundation in mnemonics. - He explains the peg system (0–9), with sounds linked to digits (T/D=1, N=2, M=3, R=4, L=5...). - He teaches how to transform numbers into vivid, absurd, sensory images. - He gives the example of memorizing the first digits of PI using bizarre images. - He builds pegs 1–12 (hat, hen, ham, arrow, ale, shoe, key...). - He encourages the personalization of images—the system must be adapted to the performer. REMEMBERING THE SIGNS Building the Zodiac Memory Palace Using the previous pegs, the author associates each sign with a concrete image, based on: - Greek myth - Ancient symbolism - But above all, visual mnemonic associations. KNOWING CUSP DATES How to memorize the start and end dates of each sign (cusp mnemonics) SEEING STARS Zodiac Anagram / Branching Tree (prop-less sign divination) In 7 pages the author combines several classic approaches (Farmer, Turner’s, Alain Nu...). He gives a script and a process involving face reading + logic + anagramming and shows complete examples (e.g., discovering July 18th, sign Cancer). And I'm at page 99. Helder

PALM STAR
An alternative, more 'organic' system for a reading or intimate performance. - It links the four fingers to the four 'quarters' of the year. - It uses parts of the hand that correspond to the signs. - The person focuses on their birthday, and the performer observes micro-reactions when touching certain areas. - The logic reduces the possibilities to just 3 signs. - From there, they use cold reading + physical associations to confirm the sign. So far we've seen that the book is dense, full of mnemonic systems, combining modern prop-less mentalism with readings, it provides complete processes, with scripts and psychology, it has a very personal tone: the author shares history, psychology, and practical experience. PALM STAR SYSTEM The "Palm Star System" is a hybrid method that combines palm reading techniques with the deduction of a person's astrological sign. And he provides a complete script. PALM STAR - STAGE STAR He describes in 3 pages a simplified stage process for "Palm Star." The method utilizes the "Major Effect" to involve the audience and incorporates psychology, mass responses, and conditioning to subtly narrow possibilities. The revelation of a sign is presented as a "powerful yet subtle" moment. ON READINGS The Nature of a Psychic Reading The author describes the psychic/intuitive reading as an artistic conversation, co-created between: - the querent (the person receiving the reading), - the reader, - the oracle used (cards, runes, etc.), - and an external source or 'spirit' that transmits information. He explains that the term cold reading is no longer suitable because it has been distorted by skeptics to the point of excluding the spiritual/intuitive component which, for him, is essential to the process. Consciousness, Source, and the Role of the Reader There is a reflection on: - the inner voice that reads, - the observer who watches it, - and something even deeper that sends thoughts. The reader becomes a channel through which this source expresses itself. Steve also writes about the first oracles he encountered and how he gained confidence over the years. It's about 6 pages long, but it's packed with valuable information. And I'm at page 120. Helder

ON PALM READING
Overview and Traditions of Palmistry This section ON PALM READING presents the fundamentals of palmistry, describing traditions and cultural differences. It provides a good introduction to palmistry, covering the meanings of the main lines and finger size, along with recommendations for further reading if you want to expand your knowledge in this field. Eleven Points on Giving Readings During a Psychic Entertainment Program In this 3-page chapter he presents 11 fundamental principles that we should take into account in our readings and gives us his opinion on what a reading is not. I'm going to read these several times. SIGNS FOR READINGS This section presents a practical and simple framework for using astrology in readings. The author explains that most people identify deeply with their sign, making it a powerful tool for intuitive reading and building an emotional connection. He shows how to work with: Element (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) Quality (Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable) Ruling Planet And then provides brief psychological profiles for each sign, using language useful for quick, validating, and symbolic readings. The profiles aren't rigid: they serve as starting points for creating personalized, introspective, and emotionally meaningful readings. NUMEROLOGY This is an explanation of how he uses numerology as a versatile tool in any performance context—readings, mentalism, stage, close-up, or improvised interactions and he presents the meanings of the numbers from 1 to 20. It’s a short chapter. MYSTIC 37 Here the author focuses on the psychological tendencies related to freely thought numbers. He explains that: - 37 is the most chosen number when asking for a number between 1 and 100; - 7 is the most chosen number between 1 and 10; - This pattern repeats in virtually all cultures. Based on this, he builds strong mentalism effects for both close-up and stage. This section shows how the performer can turn this simple psychological phenomenon into an impressive revelation, dressing it up with language about the collective unconscious, mental patterns, and numerical mystery. And we are at page 152. Next Alain Nu. Hélder

ALAIN NU - SACRED GEOMETRY
ALAIN NU’S PHILOSOPHY Alain states he is passionate about methods, principles, and secrets. His goal is always to simplify, make a method more elegant, or eliminate props whenever possible. The effect only matters if it generates an Aha! moment or some kind of insight. 2. The concept of the effect A 4 number force, but presented with a spiritual/mathematical dressing. The logic of the effect: The audience chooses a 3-digit number. A set of operations follows. Everyone arrives at the same final number. The presentation involves conversation about numbers that shape the universe—sacred geometry—to make the phenomenon deeper. 3. The effect in performance The audience is instructed to pick up their cell phone and open the calculator. He guides everyone step by step, with humor and rhythm. In the end, everyone shows the camera (or live) that they arrived at the same number. A prediction with the number was always visible from the beginning. 4. Notes on execution - It works equally well live or via Zoom. - The entire script is included in the text (in the book you have the complete script). - Alain thanks the “Mystery Arts Dojo,” a weekly brainstorming group created during the pandemic. - It's a short but very rich chapter: a classic method transformed into a modern, clean, and engaging performance. AMONG THE STARS In this chapter Stuart explains an astrological-mnemonic system to link zodiac signs, birth dates, and famous celebrities, with practical applications in mentalism, readings, and both stage and close-up performances. The method combines visual memory, psychology, and a simple but very effective narrative structure. The chapter includes complete examples for various signs and strategies for using all of this in performance. NEAL SCRYER The section opens with a personal tribute to Neal Scryer, describing him as a warm, creative, and unpredictable figure. He is presented as someone who deeply influenced the author, both in style and in the emotional approach to mentalism. The text highlights Scryer's humor, generosity, and the way he creates reading experiences with a strong emotional impact. SCRYER’S ASTROLOGICAL SIGN In this excerpt from Scryer's Vault, a way of approaching sign readings is described that prioritizes intuition, open interpretation, and emotional framing, rather than structured processes or anagrams. The central idea is: starting with a suggestion (e.g., 'Does Pisces mean anything to you?'), and then building the experience around the answer, whatever it may be—always turning the interaction into something meaningful for the person. There is also a list of general characteristics for each sign, used to color readings in a symbolic and inspired way. PALM’S NOTES ON SCRYER’S SIGN Stuart Palm describes his own adaptation of Scryer's concept, emphasizing the use of intuition, astrological symbols, and small visual aids (like dice or cards) to enrich readings. And we're at page 197. Next: Pillars of Destiny Revisited Helder

PILLARS OF DESTINY REVISITED
Introduction to the Chinese zodiac system and simplified ways of using it in a performative or reading context. The focus is on symbolically understanding the animals, their traditional order, and how this can be integrated into personal interpretation, personality, and stories. The Circle of Animals Presentation of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac, each with its symbolism and general character. The section emphasizes: – that the system is cyclical; – that the animals are archetypes; – that this can be used as a starting point for thematic readings. A narrative adaptation of the classic legend of the race to the Jade Emperor’s palace follows, explaining why the animals ended up in that order. It is mainly used as historical context and inspiration for readings and storytelling. Mnemonic Animal Order Explains creative ways to memorize the order of the animals, using mental images, rhymes, or humorous associations. Alternative Mnemonic An equally visual and symbolic alternative for remembering the sequence of animals, using shapes of numbers and simple associations. The Animal Tree Develops a conceptual scheme to symbolically distinguish the 12 animals through intuitive questions and broad associations (e.g., big/small, threatening/calm, four-legged, etc.). The emphasis is always on intuitive reading, observation of the person, and narrative structure, not secret procedures. Learning the Year Refers to general ways of using the Chinese zodiac to guide readings about age, personal cycles, and life phases. It also talks about cultural aspects, such as the use of red bracelets in the years of one's own animal—useful elements for contextualizing conversations and readings. It also highlights ideas for mentally organizing significant dates and relating them to cycles, without going into internal procedures. PETER TURNER A brief introduction presenting Peter Turner as an innovator, particularly in the way he manipulates perception, narrative, and the audience’s emotional experience. It reinforces the impact of his approach on contemporary mentalism. USING THE LIFE EQUATION This chapter is the explanation of Peter's routine that you probably already know. TWENTY FIRST CENTURY DAY FOR DATE The chapter presents a modern system for quickly determining the day of the week corresponding to any date in the 20th and 21st centuries. The author recounts how he discovered this type of calculation with a performer in Coney Island and later through the work of the mathematician and 'mathemagician' Arthur Benjamin, whose method he adapts and simplifies. He concludes this chapter by giving tips on how he uses this system in performance. Next: ON PERFORMING Helder

ON PERFORMING
In this 3-page chapter he explains things to consider when opening any performance : - creating unity among the audience right at the opening - use of a 'Major Effect' (Bob Cassidy's concept) - reinforcing emotional connection using personal stories and astrology. Stuart also highlights the importance of integrating dates and astrology into larger routines (like Q&A, Sneak Thief, Blindfold, Envelope Tests), as people have a strong emotional connection to their own birthday. GROUP SACRIFICE A ritualistic and participative variation inspired by Woody Aragon’s 'Love Ritual'. The presentation is designed to involve the entire audience, who receive four cards (or cards with symbols/themes) and participate in a symbolic process of mixing, sacrifice, intention, and choice. The routine is structured as a spiritual/collective experience, focused on: - formulating a realistic wish; - making a symbolic 'sacrifice'; - following instructions associated with love, future, relationships, or career; - finishing with a gesture of 'liberation' and another of 'empowerment'. At the end, the participant checks if the fragments match, and each suit/symbol is interpreted as a path or focus for achieving the intention (sacrifice, love, power, or work). It also includes a note for the performer: small choices made by the audience during the ritual can provide useful indications for later readings. PRACTICE SESSION A summarized list of the ritual steps, only as a general mnemonic device. It serves as a training guide for the artist to structure the flow of the presentation. And we're at page 256. Next: Life Path Q&A Helder

LIFE PATH Q&A
Introduction to a Q&A (questions/answers) approach based on birth dates and minimal information given by the audience. The author explains: - why asking for open-ended questions from the audience can cause blockages; - how the birth date and Life Path number can provide enough material for readings; - that the value of the performance is less in the technique and more in how to use the information to create an emotional and dynamic experience. There are references to the work of Bob Cassidy and Ted Karmilovich as conceptual inspiration. PREPARATION Explanation and tips about the material used for the Q&A routine: - index cards - pencils - prepared paper bags - bowls/boxes - clipboard or pad. Performance He brilliantly describes the dramatic structure of the Q&A presentation step by step in about 8 pages with all the details. THOUGHTS & VARIATIONS Final reflections on: - alternatives to simplify the writing process; - how to adapt for different audiences and cultures; - importance of clarity and ritualistic framing to reduce audience resistance; - notes on versions with Hull cards, with less writing, or just with birth dates. Stuart reinforces that the essence lies in the experience and meaning, not the mechanics. LIFE PATH ACIDUS NOVUS A conceptual variation where: - the cards are folded in a way that allows for more fluid and flexible readings; - the artist can work just with a name, date, and Life Path; - the presentation always maintains thematic coherence with astrology, numerology, and intuition. He reiterates the idea that the process should seem organic and spiritual, regardless of the technique used. THE REAL THING A performance proposal without collecting hidden information, using only: - name - birth date - Life Path - Signature The performer mixes cards, calls volunteers, and conducts purely intuitive/interpretative readings, leading the audience to a climate of sharing, empathy, and 'healing'. TOSSED OUT SIGNS
An astrology routine presented as a quick and humorous reading: - uses the month/season of birth as a pretext for fun and light observations; - creates contrast between personality types; - sets the stage for a later revelation of individual signs. The section explores how humor, structure, and timing can turn simple information into something impactful. The secret of this one is great.
ON STOOGES Here we have a discussion about the use of instant stooges—participants induced to ‘cooperate’ without knowing they are creating an illusory effect. The author warns that while this works well in magic, it is dangerous for mentalism and psychic entertainment performances because it compromises the performer’s credibility and generates negative reports after the show. He explains that today, any participant can expose details online such as secret notes, signals, or backstage instructions, which erodes the image of authenticity of the performance. The text reinforces the difference between magic (where tricks are assumed) and psychic performances (where the impact depends on the genuine experience). He also criticizes ‘reenactment’ shows and meta-magic that reveal part of the backstage—because the ‘clever’ kills the ‘magic’. ON KEEPING SECRETS AND EXPOSURE Stuart takes an 'old school' view: secrets must be protected, and gatekeeping is natural. He argues that abundant exposure does not create better artists, but rather saturation, and that true mentalism requires gradual, almost gnostic, learning. He admits to having improperly exposed ideas in the past (like in his TEDx), and today considers that a mistake. He defines exposure as any revelation without an adequate barrier to entry, and criticizes the current culture of quick tutorials that make the audience think they know secrets—such as the double lift, swami, thumb tip, or calculator methods. When learned without context or respect, these 'viral secrets' become weapons to sabotage performances. The chapter argues that keeping secrets protects not only the methods, but the very possibility of generating wonder. Next: Intimate Performances. Helder

INTIMATE PERFORMANCES
Stuart starts by explaining that, historically, mentalism was not considered suitable for intimate or close-up environments: many artists preferred the stage to avoid direct questions from the audience about methods or the origin of abilities. The pandemic forced him to work almost exclusively in close proximity for three and a half years, first in a luxury Teppanyaki restaurant and later in a cocktail bar. This residency was decisive for developing specific routines, refining presentations, and creating a constant client pipeline—more effective than online pages or advertising. He describes his usual initial set for new spectators: - a dice routine with readings, - sometimes a magic square, - followed by a book test, - and a personalized revelation involving a name, drawing, or the spectator's date of birth. He also highlights how using birthdays and astrology strengthens the emotional connection with the audience, opening doors for future readings, events, and even hypnotherapy. He also points out the importance of keeping notes on regular clients (birthdays, companies, preferences) and how small demonstrations of memory reinforce credibility. Afterward, he discusses differences between various contexts of intimate performance: - corporate events, - walk-around, - “mentalism corner” (inspired by Ted Lesley), - mini-shows in a separate room (“Psychic Mystery Show”). And explains how to avoid the role of the “Great Interrupter,” preferring to always organize the audience in their own space, avoiding interrupting people while they eat. EVEN BETTER THAN THE REAL THING In this section, the author emphasizes that one of the greatest compliments he can receive is to be perceived as “the real thing.” To achieve that, he strives for consistency between his character, personal life, and performance style. He recounts his experience working in the restaurant both before and during the pandemic: soft openings, influential regulars, and performing weekly for years — all of which allowed him to refine his intimate opening set. He describes in detail the narrative structure of the initial approach to guests: determining whether they had been informed about the presence of the mentalist, identifying celebrations (birthdays, promotions, farewells), speaking with the staff, quietly gathering information to build connection, and establishing rapport. He also introduces the “yes set” concept applied to the beginning of the performance — getting three consecutive affirmations to encourage cooperation and openness. And we're at page 303. PRECIOUS FREE WILL
Stuart describes the part of his set based on the classic Free Will plot, adapted to a context of dice and color readings. Without going into method, the section explains: – How symbolic color reading creates personal meaning. – How the spectator’s small choices appear to influence the outcome. – How the narrative of “free will vs. destiny” provides emotional and philosophical structure. – How the word “precious” is used to naturally guide choices. – How the routine ends with a printed prediction confirming the final arrangement of the choices. He stresses that this version has been refined over many years, inspired by variations from Deddy Corbuzier, Alain Nu, Jimmy Fingers, and especially a handling shared by Davidson Mulkey, which rekindled his interest in the plot. Final Part of the Section — Integration with Other Routines From the Free Will phase, the author smoothly transitions into other demonstrations within the same intimate set: – readings, – symbolic choices, – demonstrations using dice, – and eventually a personalized magic square for the spectator, offered as a keepsake or talisman. The section concludes by noting that this structure makes it easy to adjust the performance length — sometimes ending here, other times moving into a second set if the group is receptive. The 'Intimate Performances' section presents the author's work in close-up environments, developed over several years in luxury residencies. It explains how he built effective sets, created emotional connections with the audience, and developed strategies to act naturally and convincingly without seeming intrusive. The text addresses client management, the creation of meaning, ethics, presentation structure, and the integration of narratives such as astrology, destiny, and free will. The final part describes the opening set (dice + reading + prediction) and its evolution, culminating in a personalized version of Free Will. ON USING A PENDULUM A chapter dedicated to the use of the pendulum in psychic performance. It is presented as a tool for ideomotor reading—the body responds before the conscious mind. The text includes: - performer and spectator preparation, - how to define basic movements (yes/no, direction, circles), - how to create a spiritual or intuitive narrative, - how to use the pendulum for readings, revelations, or decisions. The author emphasizes that the presentation must sound natural and that the pendulum works best when framed as an amplifier of the audience's intuition. Next: GNOTHI SEAUTON Helder

GNOTHI SEAUTON
This section introduces the ancient Greek concept “Gnothi Seauton” — Know Thyself — explaining how the expression appears across various cultures and spiritual traditions. The author notes that the phrase was inscribed at the Temple of Apollo in Delphi, where the oracle resided, and that the idea also derives from ancient Egyptian teachings (“the body is the house of God, therefore know yourself”). The purpose of this part is to present the philosophy behind the “Access Your Psychic Self” series: true psychic practice is less about predicting the future and more about accessing one’s inner mind, one’s “inner gods,” the unconscious layer that everyone possesses. The “psychic self” is described as a deep level of the mind, accessible through the subconscious. The more one develops this connection, the stronger intuitive perceptions become. Stuart states that the quickest and most practical way to begin developing this ability is through dowsing, especially with a pendulum. The chapter introduces: - how to use a pendulum, - how to make one, - what types of pendulums to look for, - and several practical applications. The promise is that the reader will quickly see results, learning to communicate with the unconscious mind and taking the first step toward awakening their own psychic abilities. CALCULATED THINKING This chapter covers numerical tricks that appear to be feats of mental divination. It includes: - calculation examples, - specific instructions to give the spectator, - how to guide someone into generating longer numbers, - how to structure the sequence to guarantee control over the outcome. Stuart also warns about potential pitfalls. This chapter ends with the author explaining how he currently performs pass-code divination. SUBTLE DIFFERENCE ON EQUIVOCATION Here he explores how small changes in the way equivoque is presented can completely alter the audience’s perception. The central idea: don’t present it as mind reading — present it as influence (“I led you to this choice”). The author explains how to frame the narrative so the choice feels organic and inevitable, reducing suspicion. Common mistakes are discussed, such as eliminating objects too directly, along with suggestions for turning the process into a psychological game rather than a mechanical trick. A MESSAGE FROM THE SPIRITS
Here we’ve a description of a stage routine inspired by a vision or dream experienced by the author — a performance involving five dice, where the audience progressively eliminates participants until only one remains. The routine begins with a mystical framing (trance/meditation), followed by the reading of a “message,” and then a sequence of dice rolls that eliminate players. It culminates in a detailed revelation about the final participant: physical description (light blue striped shirt, dark blue blazer, short beard, glasses), approximate profession (finance), even likely name (James/John/Jim), and the final number rolled (e.g., 5). The routine is presented as evidence of spirit communication (or a mediumistic vision), but a “Nuts & Bolts” section also explains the practical methods behind the effect — switches, controls, and the techniques that ensure a safe and reliable outcome on stage. The chapter blends theatrical performance (evocative language, scripting) with technical notes. WHICH HAND – SPIRIT ANIMAL This section presents a thematic and emotional variation of the classic Which Hand routine, transforming it into a spiritual/shamanic experience centered around the idea of a spirit animal. Core Idea Instead of simply guessing which hand hides an object, the performer leads the spectator through a symbolic mini-journey. The spectator imagines their spirit animal, and the performer uses this intuitive connection as a “compass” to guide the energetic reading that reveals where the object is hidden. How the Routine Is Presented - The performer explains that each person has an animal that accompanies them and influences their gestures, body tension, and micro-reactions. - The spectator thinks of this animal without revealing it. - Across several attempts, the performer reads subtle cues (arm tension, breathing, micro-expressions), but frames it all as spiritual sensitivity, not psychology. - The revelation is gradual and theatrical, giving the impression that the spirit animal is guiding the performer. Key Elements The routine is presented with a Spiritual Framing, making it sound more emotional and mystical than the classic version. The observation of the participant's behavior is subtly disguised as an "Energetic Reading." This is achieved through a Light Ritual involving subtle elements such as breathing, visual focus, and indirect contact. The routine features a Double Revelation: the main reveal is of which hand the participant holds the object in, and the bonus, optional revelation is of the spectator's spirit animal, which is presented as intuition rather than certainty. Purpose of the Chapter To encourage performers to elevate Which Hand into a more narrative, emotional, and meaningful experience. Helder

SWEET CHILDHOOD MIND
Here we’ve a deeply emotional and nostalgic routine based on the idea of symbolically regressing to childhood and tapping into the purity of a child’s mind. Core Idea The performer guides the spectator back to a childhood memory — a pure, innocent, or meaningful moment — and uses this emotional opening to deliver an apparently impossible revelation. The presentation is built on three pillars: - Emotional State — reconnecting the spectator with memories that make them open and transparent. - Guided Suggestion — using simple, universal imagery (school, toys, friends, smells, sounds). - Cold reading + intuitive performance — the performer moves closer through subtle reactions, as if “reading the child within the adult.” Typical Structure - The spectator closes their eyes and breathes — “become a child again.” - The performer describes sensations: sunlight, the ground, a backpack, a classroom. - The spectator focuses on a childhood object, place, or feeling. - The performer approaches the revelation through emotional cues. - Finally, the memory (or symbolic representation of it) is revealed as if “felt.” Tone of the Chapter Poetic and almost therapeutic — the goal is not “mind reading” but shared nostalgia and emotional vulnerability. Performance Application - Works one-on-one or on stage. - Ideal as a gentle opener or a quiet moment within a show. - Its impact comes from intimacy, not technique. - The author notes that audiences often find this kind of performance unforgettable. CARDS IN PSYCHIC ENTERTAINMENT This chapter discusses the use of cards (tarot or a regular deck) in the context of psychic entertainment. Key points: - Cards carry strong symbolism — the performer should lean into this rather than rely on technical tricks. - A reading should feel like a blend of psychology, intuition, and storytelling. - Emotional presentation is encouraged: linking card imagery to the spectator’s personal experiences. - The chapter suggests simple techniques for turning an ordinary deck into a convincing reading tool. Overall, this chapter connects mentalism with a spiritualist aesthetic. In these last sections he covered Equivoque explained as a subtle influence. And: - Use of the pendulum as an extension of the spectator's intuition. - Numerical tricks disguised as mind reading. - Symbolic use of cards for psychic readings and presentations. Overall, these sections function as a practical manual that combines technique and presentation, teaching the performer how to create convincing, psychological, and emotionally engaging experiences. THE TAROT
Stuart considers Tarot fundamental for psychic entertainment, focusing primarily on the Major Arcana for performances. A simple, adaptable routine for any audience is mentioned, inspired by various artists, whose learning requires prior knowledge of the arcana and their associated numbers. Next, he explains the mnemonics for the major arcana and the association of signs with each card. MAJORLY ARCAIN Here he describes a mentalism routine using the Major Arcana, presented as an introspective, symbolic, and emotional experience for the audience. The performance begins with the artist explaining that the Major Arcana represent virtues and challenges of human life but for this demonstration, everything will be conducted in a light and comfortable manner. The invited person chooses a card and after looking at it, is guided through a poetic visualization: imagining the card as a large painting hanging in an art gallery. This mental image opens up space for a symbolic reading linked to the card's theme. The example narrated in the text uses the Strength card, associated with the sign Leo. The interpretation talks about: - accepting oneself, including the more difficult parts, - recognizing hidden inner strengths, - confronting personal shadows, - transforming challenging characteristics into potential, - and the importance of self-knowledge (with reference to the inscription 'Know thyself' from the Oracle of Delphi). Can be performed: - at the table, with small groups, - standing, repeating the experience for several people, - on stage, in a more theatrical format, where one participant serves as the 'conductor' to find another person in the audience, intensifying the intuitive aspect of the moment. He also discusses some scenic and behavioral details that help create an elegant, fluid, and surprising experience—including preparation, posture, narrative, and small curious situations that happen naturally with the audience. ORACLE & ZODIAC CARDS This part describes the creation of alternative oracle systems (like the Palm’s Oracle), based on simplified symbols and astrological associations. It explains how to combine signs, elements, and archetypes to generate quick and fluid readings. It also discusses the usefulness of minimalist oracle cards for mentalists because they require less memorization and reinforce the idea of spontaneity. AN IMPROPTUM FIVE-CARD PENDULUM TEST
A practical routine: with five cards placed on the table, the spectator uses a pendulum to 'detect' the special card. The secret revolves around influencing micro-decisions and leveraging ideomotor responses. The section explains variants, rhythms, patter, and how to do it with everyday objects. It is an example of how to transform something simple into a spiritually charged experience. STAR COUNT Here a system for numerical or symbolic analysis appears, based on patterns (stars, counts, paths). It can be used as a reading or as an indirect method of divination. The focus is on the appearance of complexity versus real simplicity: the method is easy, the effect seems profound. It also describes how to use this aesthetic to create a moment of 'inevitable revelation'. ON PLAYING CARDS A reflection on playing cards as a universal tool: familiar, neutral, rich in symbolism. This section analyzes the differences between reading Tarot and ordinary cards, the advantages of the traditional deck, and how to create convincing readings even without explicit symbols. It includes historical references and the connection between classic cartomancy and modern mentalism techniques. CARDS CROSSING OVER It describes the phenomenon of using cards from different systems (Tarot, regular deck, oracles) cross-functionally. The chapter shows how allowing meanings to migrate between decks creates freer and more emotional readings. It also gives examples of hybrid routines, where an apparently banal card gains depth because it is reinterpreted through another symbolic system. ON PRACTICE and VARIATIONS A more introspective text: it talks about daily practice, creating variations, adapting to the audience, recording readings, improvisation, and self-awareness. The author also discusses failures, successes, the importance of rhythm, active listening, and consistency. It is almost a manifesto on how to perfect the art of reading and avoid making it mechanical. Next: Clairvoyant Cartomancy Helder
