Those stacks of beer coasters in bars and pubs should be good for magic tricks, but I'm stumped for ideas. I've used the square-shaped ones for Gaeten Bloom's 'Standing Card' effect, which works great. Anyone else have any ideas? Or perhaps references in the magic literature to refer me to? Thanks in advance!

Manuel m=Muerte has a beer coaster routine on his new DVD Done by Misdirection. Smile He vanishes it, then it reappears under a glass of beer! Really sweet. Smile

I annoy my wife with 3 Card Monte exhibitions every time we eat at Chile's! They have circular drink coasters there, made of cardboard. I put three of them together, give them a bend, and mark one with an iced tea stain. I guess it would technically be 3 Coaster Monte. Any 3 Card Monte reference would teach you the basic moves. Some moves will only work with cards, but many lend themselves to other flat objects as well, such as drink coasters.

you drown by staying there.

I take a piece of magnetic sheet and cut a piece the same size as the beer mat.

This is then stuck on the back - I just use Copydex.

Then you can make a coin 'pass through' the beer mat into a glass or beer mug quite easily. - Just think about it!

If you are stuck, then just PM me for the details.

Café member Payne won a close-up contest at Kramien's two years ago using beer mats. I don't know if he ever published it, but you could ask.

I also do the bill production. On the bill I have printed "Congratulations, you are a winner" in big bold letters. After the production, you will see everyone breaking their costers open to check them.

I don't do this when I'm working, only when visiting a restaurant. That makes it even funnier to watch them when they have no idea you are a magician.

I have used the round cardboard coaster ones as an impromptu jumbo coin. In the end of a coin sequence do a switch and produce the beer coaster. Seemed to get a good reaction. The guy bought me a beer to use the coaster with.

When I worked with Steve Spill in the 80s, he used to have two cards selected and lost in the deck, he'd toss a beer coaster into the air, the coaster would boomerang, and he would catch the coaster in the middle of the deck between the two selected cards. It was very effective, as was everything that Steve did.

Gregory Wilson has a great trick with the coasters that I have tried.

I'm not sure if it's on one of his vids or not.

You ask someone if they want to trade coasters.
When you find someone that will do that, you
bend it in half and in quarters and then from between the folds of the coaster, you pull our a $20.

You state that there's some contest and you have "THE WINNING COASTER".

It's pretty funny. Even if they don't really fall for it, they fall for it this much...

Frank I imagine your routine is based on the coin in bread roll idea?

I do a coin matrix with 4 beer mats and 4 cheese biscuits.

I also use a beer mat when performing coin unique in pubs or restaurants. (magnetic version of scotch and soda). the smaller coin penetrates the beer mat and ends up in the glass.

in my multiple selection routine, a signed card usually ends up under a beer mat.

here are three ideas right off the top of my head that I use regularly.

good luck!
