Danny, you don't need belief for this, you need logic.

Either:

A.
The effect can be performed with a borrowed can as I say or...

B.
1) The scene in the trailer where 2 guys perform it twice with their own can is STAGED and the person is paid to say: "I would say it is fake, but this is real - it was HIS can and he did it himself."
2) Cyril does not know what he is talking about when he says: "This is genuinely the best BORROWED can routine I've seen!"
3) Gregory Wilson does not know what he is talking about or doesn't care about his reputation.
4) I'm not aware of the consequences of publicly executing my reputation and character by shooting myself in the face by making a claim about this being possible with a borrowed can when in reality it isn't.

How much liquid comes or doesn't come out depends on how long a can has been laying there and I really didn't think that not zooming in on liquid drops might become an issue.

Are you using pre sales to fund the video tutorials? I know this is popular now.

As you have probably read on the website:

"PS! Pre-ordering helps me as an independent creator to manage all the costs it takes to deliver the project with highest quality."

If you are looking for an expanded answer and deeper understanding then... As an independent creator I'm covering absolutely all costs it takes to release a product:

1. Trick/routine development
2. Product production
3. Delivery mechanisms/platform
4. Marketing costs
5. Customer support

This is all an immense amount of work, which also takes considerable amount of time and financial investment BEFORE I make a single sale. Pre-sales help me to better manage all the upfront costs of a product release and also makes it more doable for me to do "pre-customer service" - for example being available here for everyone in the Cafe and answering everyone's questions and concerns.

When releasing with retailers I don't have to worry about traffic at all, they have a million people in their lists to send the announcement to and sales start coming in. But being independent I have to now reach those people myself and doing ads and marketing takes money. I'm just hoping it doesn't take the majority of the sales as it does going through the retailers, but maybe I'm wrong.

I also obsess about my teaching/tutorials as much as I obsess about refining my effects. I refine and re-do my tutorials just like I refine and re-do my routines when I'm developing an effect. Shooting a tutorial can easily be a month of work for me. For example I have the masterclass filmed already, which I'm sure the majority of you would be happy with - just like I had the version to perform the trick in the hands of a spectator already more than 10 years ago - but if I MYSELF know that I haven't done my best yet, then I'm not going to put it out yet and keep working on it.

And if anyone is interested about the payoff of doing something like this then... I'm doing all of that with absolutely no guarantees that I even break even. I would be better off just working with a minimum wage than investing my time and resources into a project such as this. But this is the price I pay for doing something I love and care about and I hope by becoming an independent creator and creating a bigger and loyal following, I can make pursuing this passion more feasible and be able to locate more hours to creating and releasing magic I love to people who love it as well.

David, as you can read in my last message just two posts up from your post: "the routine is probably more fooling to magicians than I ORIGINALLY thought."

And yes, this question has been raised several times - just like it has been answered several times.

But let me copy paste the answers already given for easy reading again:

Watching a performance IN PERSON and watching A VIDEO are FUNDAMENTALLY DIFFERENT, because...

Between being able to:

1. replay a video over and over, and
2. slowing it down
3. pausing it, zooming in etc

...even pretty fantastic mechanics and misdirection can be caught out WHEN IT'S IN VIDEO.

Magic is created to be performed BY magicians not TO them, it’s an experience crafted for laymen. And the trailer successfully demonstrates what this experience for laymen is, which is the point of a trailer.

The trailer shows a clear enough performance video from the spectator's perspective 0:31-0:51

There are 15 different versions and it is not reasonable to show the same trick from the beginning to the end 15 times in 15 different ways. I showed maybe only half of the versions that come with the system/masterclass, which is a standard practice with a project on that scale -  just like with any other comprehensive masterclass or a book with several routines - the trailer is not going to demonstrate every single thing in the masterclass or book.

I hope this helps!

Again and I stand by my appreciation for creators such as yourself. I read all your posts and the repost "AGAIN" for "EASY READING". Thanks I think. Respectfully you can repost as many times as you like, I and others still disagree. I like transparency. That shows for me, laying it on the line, having confidence in your product despite the possible backtracking.

Sure you might lose a sale or two but it speaks volumes in so many ways. MANY times effects are purchased from a trailer that portrays something that it is not due to factors that aren't clarified. Puts a bad taste in your mouth and once bitten, twice shy. Just an observation, no reflection.

Just show the routine. But that's just me and in the scheme of things in doesn't matter what I think.

As a side note, I really don't take much stock in well known, popular magician's endorsements. It's the spectator's reactions.
Turn on the TV and who is endorsing products that manufacturers feel will generate sales.

It looks like you have a winner on your hands by what you have said and the videos you released. Thanks again as was posted above for engaging those that express interest and some doubts regarding marketing transparency. Thanks, seriously.

Did I misunderstand you, David, that this was a question you wanted an answer to:

Why are you trying to get me to slag you when I tried to say nice things?

Why do so many "magic creators" use an appeal to authority logical fallacy? I don't care what anyone says. There will be liquid in the can when you are done. Sugary liquid all over someones hands that will make them uncomfortable. They would look at their hands and shake them off and all the reactions regular people have to having soda on their hands. It is sticky and unpleasant. Seems like logic to me.

Here is a tip for you in business. All the things you mentioned are considered the "cost of doing business". It is what it is. It takes what it takes. Nobody who is purchasing anything from you cares or should know what those are. The bottom line is simply a value proposition. Is it "worth" it to them to part with X dollars to purchase this thing, or any thing for sale. Part of that value proposition is the veracity of the statements made by the creator in order to make the sale. Part of it is just how much IS cut out in order to make the video a good seller. Were things cut out in order to gloss over some problems? In magic sales over the decades many have been burnt badly by these issues. They are asking if this is the case now because of past experience.

I agree with David. What other magic creators say about whatever means nothing.

I'd rather see less edited video and have it speak for itself.

All I was pointing out was that jumping from "I don't see liquid drops in the trailer" to "therefore I don't believe/trust this can be done with a borrowed can" - meaning - the spectators must be fake and Johannes, Cyril, Gregory and everyone who have seen the method must be lying, is quite a leap to take. Either it can be done with a borrowed can or everyone are lying.

If you are not sure can it be done with a borrowed can and you think I might be lying, then I guess just wait for the reviews.

That is a valid point that there will inevitably be liquid still in the can and when tipped upside down, soda will be on ones hand. Unless either you or the spectator are taking the can and shaking it vigorously, some soda will spill out.

Unless that part was taken out when doing the editing, it'd almost have to be

You can buy Breakthrough by Mengel on Theory 11. at 30 bucks. I would recommend this. Why pay more for more variations. any magician can make 100 variations of their own but this is overkill by 15 times. Also, even if you don't like the trick which is only rated 4 out of 5 stars BY BUYERS here, it can help you another way. even this video has way too much talking and is not well organized. If you have problems getting to sleep, this will take care of that very quickly. It helps me to sleep soundly if I just start watching the video. I am not joking. Everyone in the world can tell me how magical this is, but when are you going to "borrow" a soda can, to do a penetration thAT IS NOT visual at all. Also, so deceptive about not showing where they put the coin/tab into the can (new trailer version). I like doing penetrations that are visual, and clean, which obviously have more impact, I don't care if your Estonian momma disagrees with me. This is one for the drawer.

Danny, I think we were talking past each other and both of our communication came out wrong. So let me try to make it right...

You actually came with a lot of positivity and support into this thread, which I appreciate, thank you! So I know you didn't mean to, it just came out wrong, but when you questioned - can it be done with a borrowed can - you also publicly questioned my integrity and made a suggestion that I'm lying. Which I thought was not fair to me or a logical conclusion to jump to, especially given what kind of transparency and responsiveness I have already shown up with throughout this thread. So that was the point I felt needed to be addressed, but it came out wrong as it wasn't balanced compared to also with the positivity and logical reasoning you brought to the thread.

So, I'm sorry! I was wrong!

And of course you are right when it comes to the presence of some liquid in a can when it's freshly finished and borrowed. And there definitely were some drops for example when the guys in the trailer performed it with their own beer can.

But rest assured - everything this masterclass teaches, all the 10+ versions can be done with a borrowed can!

Peace!
Smile

My father used to tell me that everything before the word "but" is meaningless.

First of all my conversation in no way came out wrong. YOU misunderstood and that is on you. YOU ignored that I was actually not bashing you but was supportive of your plight. Until your response and that sort of changed my perspective. You are so fixated on getting your opinion on how this is perceived by others out there that you completely miss the people who are trying to help you with that.

I NEVER said the can "couldn't" be borrowed. I thought it was unlikely that a can which had no soda spilling out onto someones hands it was not likely THAT SPECIFIC CAN was borrowed. I am right. Also having soda on ones hands is very uncomfortable as it is sticky. I was avoiding saying it but it actually is not such a great idea to get soda on someone.

If I was to question your integrity it would be for deceptive editing. I think you are right on the edge, and I can't make a conclusion until I see what is edited out.

In the end you are doing something deceptive, and being honest about it. Not sure where that falls on the scale. You are making something look better than it does, so you can sell more of them, to fund your video process. Again not sure where that falls on the scale. I DO know it is not 100% the way it should be.

I couldn't care less about the 10 plus versions of whatever. It is 10 plus versions TO YOU, to a spectator it is the same thing over and over. Boring. If you can force a card 1,000 different ways, and reveal it 1 way, you have 1 trick. If you can force it 1 way, and reveal it 1,000 ways then you have 1,000 tricks. The audience doesn't care about your methods and never should. Might not hurt to learn that. You being a big time magic creator for a living and all.

I tried to be positive. I really did. I am done with that. Yea the line in my signature is true. "The sting in any rebuke is the truth."
Here is another truth. The effect itself is "meh". It is a penetration and no better or worse than any other out there. Methods mean nothing to an audience.

And the problem with admitting you edit video is many fold. First it implies you can take 1,000 videos and pick the best 2. Big deal I can do that with 2 card monte. Second you can coach and edit together reactions. Again I can do that with 2 card monte. Your position is that "I am doing this deceptive thing, but I draw the line at that deceptive thing". This puts you on shaky ground at best. Lash out at a guy who was VERY supportive about the one little critical point and "Methinks the lady doth protest too much". (A quote from Hamlet, not calling you a lady.)

Rest assured? Really? You admit to deceptive practices and want me to "rest assured"? Not likely.

I think in the end in your mind and heart that somehow this ALL makes some sort of sense. I don't believe you believe you are being deceptive in any way shape or form. You just think this is the way to do this sort of thing. And I think this is the EXACT problem we have had in magic for decades. This sort of mindset is what has created magic junk drawers and closets for a LONG time now. It has caused more disappointment and buyers remorse than most As Seen On TV sales or online dating profiles.

There are people who are MUCH smarter than they lead us to believe on the surface. They express elements about themselves that creates a mask and that forms particular characteristics about them. Particular characteristics so that how you view them is shaped for the moment. Magicians who perform well are also good at this and that is what makes their act so entertaining. In this instance it's a sales tactic and it is effective as you can see from previous posts. I don't say this to discredit him. I surely hope that he is successful with a great product and that everyone is satisfied with their purchase.
How many magicians does it take to change a lightbulb? Regardless, for magicians darkness is a time for d'lite.

In addition to marketing,I watched, again, the trailer and handling of the can and tab. I learned from Vito Lubo,an experienced stage magician and mime how to project to an audience the proper hand/finger positions of holding small, medium and large objects.

When holding a very small object like a soda can tab the natural way to hold it for display is by the thumb and pointer finger. You don't use all 4 fingers and the thumb. Very unnatural. When a pro produces a product and then markets it, care and study in proper sleight of hand should be a priority as well.

I would study (pay attention to) in my restaurant work people as they were eating. Using the silverware, picking up a glass to drink and even their eye gaze as they placed the food in their mouths. There are just natural ways people use their body to do life even body language.

That said, since you introduced your product here and discussed it, it opens it up to hopefully constructive criticism. I don't think enough scrutiny was taken into consideration regarding handling. Thus the reason the trailer was edited. IMO
Respectfully.

Oh yea natural and magicians have as much to do with each other as a hot dog and a warm puppy. Coins are held in contrived manners often looking like the magician suddenly contracted polio. To clip cards the vanishing thumb truck must be done, strange body turns that suddenly happen as if the magicians underwear is riding up on him. They display cards and flip them thinking the only thing that matters if their perception.

Your advice of watching natural movement is absolutely dead on. I don’t know many slights, but they are all natural. Best compliment I ever get was working in Key Largo. A guy just blurted out “how can this be happening? You’re not doing anything!” It shaped the way I perform magic.

By the way everyone I was agreeing with David not being critical of anyone else. He just makes a fantastic point.

Also, so deceptive about not showing where they put the coin/tab into the can (new trailer version). I like doing penetrations that are visual, and clean, which obviously have more impact, I don't care if your Estonian momma disagrees with me. This is one for the drawer.
