When buying rope for a magic trick, I know that you need to buy a cotton rope but what diameter of rope should you purchase?
Does anyone know what diameter magicians’ ropes are? Thank you in advance.

The cheaper magician's rope is approximately 1/4" diameter. I have some better quality rope that is 1/2" diameter, but it is not round, it is kind of flat. The cheaper rope is not as "white" as the more expensive rope is either.
I have seen rope used on stage that looks to be 5'8"-3/4" in diameter and that is round, but I don't know what type it is or where it is available. I asked at a local magic shop recently and they didn't have it. I'd like to know where to get some of that type of rope that would work well for magicians. Hope this helps. Regan

Thanks Regan for your reply.
I have seen the larger and smaller diameter rope both used for magic. I was just wondering what rope diameters most magicians used. There probably is no standard rope size that you can use. It just seems to me that using a larger diameter rope for magic would be harder.

The thicker rope is used more these days, plus it's more visible and offered in assorted colors. I'm certain that it's carried by most dealer's... check the links.
Good Luck. Kregg

You'll just have to experiment like all of us. No one diameter works well for everyone. I prefer something around 5/8", for most things, but that's me. I've even got rope from Europe that is about 7/8" diameter - hard for me to work with.

I think a lot depends on the type of effect you are doing. I use various types of rope according to which works best for a particular trick.

It would be great to have thicker rope. The standard stuff looks like limpy spaghetti and tends to leave behind clues when you are using it for Professor's Nightmare. I have watched Tabary perform and his rope is definitely thicker than the standard stuff we all buy at the local store. Maybe when his tapes arrive their will be some information I can share here.

I agree Martin. I would like to have some good quality, thicker rope for some of my rope routines.

Has anyone used the rope from Denny's?
I ordered the stuff from Penguin - the deluxe rope is quite good and they gave me a good price. Very soft, but still kinda flat. Does anyone know what Pavel uses?

For thicker foam-core rope see Klamm The Magic Man. There are times when I use it. However, I actually prefer the thin rope as long as it is very white. Thin white is much more visible on stage than blue that is three times the diameter.

I have checked into ordering Pavel rope in bulk and it is prohibitively expensive - much more than even the premium magicians rope you see advertised. Check his website and then call the US rep - http://www.pavelmagic.com

Daryl sells awesome 'thick rope' at his website. I haven't found this type of stage rope anywhere else... and believe me I looked. The closest thing I can find comes from a place I'm to shy to go into.
rumor is that Daryl's acrobatic rope (jumping knot of pakistan) is now made of this thick rope... Craig |

Craig, I was sitting around Fred Donaldson's little magic shop a few years back just shooting the breeze when I noticed a HUGE spool of rope. I mentioned it and Fred just laughed. He told me that he used to keep about 100 feet of it for sale but then about 10 year before he suddenly got a store full of people all for that rope. Luckily, he said, his distributor was in town so he ordered 100 feet and told everyone to come back tomorrow. He sold the 100 feet immediately and was still having to turn people down.
A year later he was besieged again. This time he had 300 feet and sold out again. He told me that he now keeps 500 feet and every year these people descend on him and buy almost all of it. It turns out that it was a local BDSM group that holds some kind of conference each year and they love the rope because it doesn't chafe the wrists of their - uhhh - well - loved ones? |

I have been using the foam core from Bob Klamm's shop.
It is very easy for me or a guest on stage to cut. The colors are nice as they work well into seasonal themed shows. Just visiting from the "Show me the Money" site. : ) Harris

I bought packages of Big Fat Rope and European Elite Rope from Hank Lee. Big Fat Rope has become my rope of choice for everything except cut & restored effects. The rope is up to 1/2 inch thick, finely woven, soft, very white and and incredibly easy to handle...but it ain't cheap, folks! This is why I don't use it for effects that consume rope. It is ideal for Loose Ends, Sandsational, Prof. Nightmare, and nearly all of Pavel's cabaret bits.

I too use the Big Fat Rope from Hank Lees. I use it for one of the Tabary routines. It is very very flexible. For some moves I thought it was a little too thick so I soaked mine in hot water and put it in a mesh bag and dried it in the dryer. It tightened it up perfect for me. FYI

Hank Moorehouse used to sell the 7/8" rope. For all I know, he may still be selling it. He can be reached through Abbott's.

I took the expert advise of Bob Sanders and went to Big Lots. They sell a 100' long 7/32" diameter $3 hank of very nice SOFT cotton rope. I bought 1000 feet of it which should last me about a year at $.03 a foot. The cashier asked us what we were going to do with all that rope, and I told her we use it in the bed room, my wife then kicked me. (my wife is 4' 11" weighs 90 lb., and calls ALL the shot at our house)
happy Al
