I do enjoy the vanishing right thumb part of this effect.

OK tell me when I’m telling lies. You didn’t say whether it happened or not, only that somehow it is on me for pointing it out.
We can agree to disagree if the vanishing thumb is a good thing.

And Mr. Denny Doyle comes out swinging, in order to point out a spot in the routine that lasts about an eighth of a second. I actually talk about the subtlety of the actions to apparently show empty hands and why it works. I also discuss attention to angles which seems to be a concern for you since it is not a routine that I would perform surrounded (as with many other one coin routines, (even Roth's)! It is obvious that you don't like the routine, which you have taken great pains to point out, and that is fine. I disagree with your assessment as I have said before. And many people on other sites which you likely don't follow unless you are a coin guy (and my guess is you aren't) are looking forward to the release.
I put up quotes in the video from several magicians that like Mickey Silver you probably don't know, but that's OK because they probably don't know you either. But my guess is that you will likely not bother to see the full youtube link, so I will post the quotes here. They were much longer actually, but I shortened them to get right to the point. Meir Yedid at mymagic.com who will be releasing this very soon will be writing the ad copy (and may elect to use the full quotes). You will soon find it available on his site. Here are the quotes about the routine and tutorial from eight guys I happen to respect: “If you want to add some ANYTIME…ANYWHERE …DECEPTIVE coin magic to your repertoire, look no further. This one coin routine checks all the boxes. I love it and your audiences will too.” - Michael Kaminskas "Do you want to improve your coin magic, or learn a great stand-up routine you can do anytime? Don’t hesitate – procure this download at once!" -Steve Shufton "I recommend this tutorial to anyone looking to strengthen classical principles with a direct and pragmatic approach." -Giacomo Bertini " Dr. Rubinstein’s one coin routine is actually an over 33 minute Master Class in basic coin magic. The routine is divided into five meticulously explained parts using multiple angles of each move. It is impossible to adequately describe this outstanding tutorial in one statement." -Bill Wells "Anyone can do this due to Doc’s clear teaching. Your spectators will have no choice, but to throw in the towel and just enjoy pure, visual magic!" -Bill Citino "Michael’s skill and passion are truly inspiring, and I can’t wait to master this routine myself!" -Mickey Silver "This is a complete routine, whose strength is developing facility with the individual moves and transfers of the coin from concealment to concealment. There is so much to learn in this deceptively short one coin routine and flurry." -Peter Samelson "This is a terrific EDC for any magician. It is modular and can be adjusted for your skill level." -Marc DeSouza Here is the full ad (there are shorter versions that Meir will probably use). This take the place of the prior links since parts are the same. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/7aUVzwtkA6U?si=YRZjmUap4eBE7aFu

You think to impress with an appeal to authority fallacy? Nope.
THE THUMB VANISHES. Defensive much? Get over it. The body turn is WAY obvious. As is the shrug that you believe you justify. I am SO HAPPY all these amazing magicians like the routine. I am not an amazing magician so me thinking what I do and pointing it out should mean nothing to you. Why do you care so much? Can't anyone have a different viewpoint? If you don't realize that an eighth of a second can completely ruin a routine I don't believe you can be helped. Do you REALLY want to continue? How about just let it go.

I have a few observations about this routine. It started off quite nicely with the initial production sequence but then the pacing moved too quickly for my taste. I prefer magical moments to sink in more. Perhaps it's just a personal preference, but when one-coin routines become too up-tempo then you almost don't know where to look at times and then it becomes more like watching a tennis match.
The big debate seems to be mostly about the "vanishing thumb" and body turn. The thumb didn't bother me as much because as Michael says it happens very quickly. Still, he may want to consider an alternate sleight to improve the routine. But the body turn was too much of a tell. I do understand wanting to bring a routine like this to a BIG finish. For example, producing a jumbo coin or many coins as is this case. But I feel a really good 'complete vanish' would have been better here and equally entertaining to a layperson. That's my two cents worth. But as others have said I also appreciate Dr. Rubinstein's many contributions thru the years. |

I should say one thing. It is not about the 1/8 of a second of the thumb vanish. It is not about the out of nowhere shrug that is incongruent. It is not about the big body turn to cover the move. It is not about any one of them, it is about all of them in totality. It is about when the coin supposedly is in one hand, only to appear in the hand it was supposedly taken from. It doesn't take long to tumble to you not transferring the coin. It is the totality of all of the things taken into consideration. One of the minor problems is not as big as when you have so many packed into one minute routine.

Thank you for your comments. I don't want this to sound like I am being defensive about the rationale for what I am teaching, and of course, everyone is entitled to an opinion (this is an opinion forum). But since these points have been raised before I feel I should respond with a bit more detail. Yes,a body turn for a magician telegraphs a steal. But the body turn used in the initial performance I posted at the beginning of this thread is because there is no one with me (it is from the teaching part of the tutorial). And as we all know it is hard to misdirect a camera. With no one nearby, you would normally turn to pluck a coin out of the air and it is a natural action. With a spectator(or group), the body turn is not as important as the misdirection of taking a coin out of a person's ear (watch the live performance), or producing it off of a table (as with the Roth routine where the attention is directed to the front of the table and away from the other hand (which starts sitting on your waist). The misdirection negates the need to use a large turn. I just didn't feel the need to give this detailed explanation before. By reaching to someone's ear with your right hand if the person is in front of you or on your left, you have enough misdirection to steal your load without any large turn. That is all taught in the tutorial.
The speed that you need to perform this will depend on your own style. It just needs to flow. The sequence of showing your hands empty is a sequence that you can use or not. As I said the routine is modular, and you can use any part. In the small snippits I put on the ad copy you can see two different performances using segments of the entire routine. I think you can see by the performance (a group of older people at a wine tasting event), everyone enjoyed it. There are also several alternative handlings explained for those who find certain moves too hard. I use this routine impromptu when asked to do a trick, and I use this routine if prepared with a load. You can also produce the amount of coins you need to perform a second routine should you like (a coins across, spellbound, wild coin, etc.). This tutorial should be released soon, and I will let you all know when it is up on Meir's site. I will not comment any more on these points, however, as I feel that this should give the reader a clear explanation for the concerns listed.

I don’t know which point you’re not getting but to clarify mine I’m positing that any one minor inconsistency (Notice that I’m not using the word flaw or something negative?) might indeed not be too noticeable. Any more than one stacks up pretty quickly. This can make any routine less impactful.
Forget this particular routine for a moment. I can be referring to any routine. Inconsistency can take an audience out of the moment. A number of them can easily lessen impact drastically.

Mr. Danny Doyle. I actually responded only to Jared but I see while I was writing my post you got one more in before mine. I thought we were done. As I said before, agree to disagree with your assessment. Be well.

I hope my last post was taken as not attacking, as I intentionally used language without words like “flaws” which imply something bad.

Very very nice routine, and the end with many coins kills. I would ask magicians to allow for other styles and routines. We all are different. It is ok to say you don't have the same style or to rant some, but please, allow for some creativity in a great coin routine. And again, the ending is pure magic!

Coutrymaven as the one coin routine shared here is to get sales first and foremost so we are all allowed to have an opinion of its worth. For me personally this is no better than any other one coin routines and it was the ending which made it a little different, the draw back to the ending however is that it can't be done impromptu and as I have said for a working magician there are far better coin routines out there.

I think it's important to note that we're attempting to "review" a product that isn't even out yet.
We're reviewing an ad. The ad makes me think of possibilities that Dr. Rubenstein says will be covered in the product and I believe him. The product probably won't be for everyone. That's alright. I suspect based on the clip and comments that the people who do buy it will learn some valuable principles and techniques, but none of us know until it's out.

Yes, critter, wise words. Until something is out, it could be changed or someone could come out with an update that makes it the greatest coin routine ever. Warren, I know it is out to drum up sales, but some of the people here are going far far beyond even ranting a little that they don't like it. Continuing to hound someone about what many coin magicians would like as at least a very good routine with many surprises is a bit over the top...

I personally haven't said anything negative about Michael in fact I said he is skilled and his teaching is top notch which I still believe, however I don't think the routine is any better than any other one coin routines and is more suited to those starting out and looking to add some techniques to their one coin routines as I don't think it added anything new..... my intention is 100% not to be unkind to anyone it was just to be honest so I am sorry if it comes across that way.

I watched it and thought this is a really cool routine. You clearly see the misdirection and they were surprised at the ending. Well done! Mark |
