Hi, I am posting this because as of 30 minutes ago, I did my first faro shuffle ever. I know a lot of people can do faro shuffles, but let me explain my story.
I have been trying to do a faro shuffle for months now, and less than an hour ago, I decided to try again, and this time, I would use my webcam. So I sat and tried to do faros for about 6-7 minutes, and finally, I did one. Not only did I do my first faro shuffle, but I got it on video. So since I have a website, I uploaded it. The video can be found at: Magicshane.com ^Right click and, "Save target as"^ I just thought since I have it on video, I might as well post it. It's strange though, that I have been trying to do faros for months, every time I picked up a deck of cards, and it just happened to be that during the six or seven minutes that I tried it on camera, I finally did one. Hmm... BTW, the video is rather large (8 Megabytes), but is only a minute long. I will try to compress it tomorrow. Did I mention the video has music? Shane Wiker |

Great! Remember to Faro train your deck once you get out from the box. Trust me!

Great. I remember I sat down for hours and hours trying to do it. Once you got it, it's no big deal anymore. Welcome to the club

Good going Shane! The faro can be a knacky little beast. I, myself, have only pulled it off perfectly a few times and then I do that spread thingy to show it exactly faroed and then make people come over and look at it and then they call me a dork. Anyway, the point is, I share your enthusiasm! Great work!

There was a magician told me that a good faro shuffle has to be done in less than 5 seconds (start from the moment you split the deck into half till you finish squaring the deck).
However, that was a good try for your 1st attempt. Keep it up, Shane. |

Thanks everyone. I compressed the video so it is now 4.4 Megabytes instead of 8. Since making this thread, I've done three more faros, I think 1 in faro and 2 outs. Anyway, in case anyone wants to watch a full action-packed minute of counting cards onto a table, the link is:

I'm not sure exactly who invented it, but Ed Marlo certainly did a lot of work with it in Revolutionary Card Technuiqe. The book doesn't say who invented it, just that Alex Elmsly gave it the term Outter and Inner Faro.

Budiono and David, when you don't know who invented something, it's a good idea to assume that Marlo did.

If I'm not mistaken, Faro was a type of sleight that gamblers use to cheat way long ago. However, A.Elmsly and Marlo popularize it.

Alex Emsley put your own techniques on Faro, but who inveted it we probably will never know.
For who want to know Alex Emsley Techniques on Faro should watch "The Magic of Alex Elmsley; The Tahoe Sessions Volume 2" on he do a interview on Faro Shuffle.

I have heard of some sort of card game called "Faro" that required this kind of shuffle, and allegedly that's where the name came from... but who knows...

Some history on the game known as Faro was that it was once the main American gambling game but is not of American origin. Originally it was spelled Pharaoh and was known in England at least as early as 1700. It was replaced by craps in the 20th century, but it is still played in some places, like Nevada.
This game is played on a special table where there are enameled representations of the 13 cards of the spade suit. At one end sits the dealer, with a shoe where the shuffled cards are placed face up. All bets are placed against the house. The player bets that a certain card will win by placing chips on the place in the layout reserve for that rank, this represents abet that a card of that rank in any suit will win. A player may also bet on a card of any rank to lose by coppering his bet, which is done by placing a copper token on the chips. These are the basics of Faro.
What do you mean it came from the bottom of the deck?

I can now faro with a new deck pretty much 100% of the time. I do miss a few times with an older deck but I am still improving on that with practice.
Keep up the work and it will eventually pay off...... |
