The single trick video makers also get a lot of cheddar from people who don't read books.

Well people used to justify a mediocre book with the phrase “if you just get one trick from a book it is worth it”.
Can’t hide behind that with the single trick video can they?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that, IMHO, the "magic industry" as we know it today (magic shops, creators, writers, videos) caters mostly to the hobbyists, while the working pros belong more to the entertainment industry. As has been said before, hobbyists need (or want) new stuff all the time, while working pros don't need it.
Back in the late 60s and early 70s, in San Francisco, several of us amateurs used to hang out on Saturday afternoons at the House of Magic, while the working pros were out playing gigs. I suspect that not much has changed, except that "hanging out at the shop" is mostly done online nowadays.

Misdirections and the California Magic Club (formerly the California Magic and Novelty Company in Martinez) present shows, lectures, and other events to increase interest and revenue. It's a fantastic way to get people to come even if they're not necessarily interested in buying or performing magic. They also have highly professional web sites. I imagine other shops around the country are doing the same.
