Anyone remembers the Vick Lawson catalogue in 1958?.I will always remember the onkey "Pumpernickle" on every page.
Recently, there was an article in "magic" on Vick Lawson which had a picture of his catalogue. My orders would take 5 months to Kingston Jamaica. Richard Lyn |

Wow! Is'nt that something. Its nice to hear from magicians who can relate to certain period in our magic lives.
I was born in Jamaica, so it was always a long wait to get props from the States, about 3 to 5 months for an order to arrive. Hey Tom, I used to have the Douglas red cover catalogue. If my memmory serves me right,Douglas has a levitation drawing on the cover. How about the Kanters,Davenport,Harry Stanley, and the large paper back Tannen's cat?. I had them all. Those were the days. Richard Lyn |

Richard,
I now have the catalogs in front of me, 500 Tricks, Douglas magicland 409 N. Ervay St. Dallas, Texas. Yes there is a a guy in a turban doing a levitation on a checkerboard tile. The Vick Lawston catalog also has a magician in a cape performing a levitation. Under Vick's name it says " I'm in business just for FUN". The date is 1963. Vick's address is Monroe Connecticut. It has many more items than the Douglas catalog though.Lot's of fun to peruse it. Rennie

The Vick Lawson and Douglas I had was from 1956.
Vick's was more paper including the cover, the colour was orange ,black and a faded yellow. The monkey was always black "Pumpernickle" I do remember that Vick's had a drawing of a magician pulling a rabbit and scarfs out of a cylinder. The Douglas was red with a much thicker cover. Boy! what memories.I was just 12 years old . Richard. |

I remember my first Dougals Magicland catalog. It was in 1955 and I saw the ad "500 Tricks", well be being a kid I thought I would learn 500 tricks from the book, not knowing it was a catalog for purchasing the tricks. However when the catalog arrived I was more than happy with it as it became my wish book. The actual 1st trick I purchased was Kenard's Mystery Box.I still have a Kenards box in my collection today, not the original though.

Yes,yes, you're so right. When I got the Vick Lawson catalogue, I thought that it was a magic book.
At a young age and living in Jamaica, I didn't quite know what a catalogue really was. I too bought that Kenard, and was really disappointed when I got it. Richard Lyn |

At least you got your order. I sent a money order...waited two years....wrote him...never got a response. I didn't know if he was real, or if anybody actually got what they ordered.

I still have my Vick Lawson catalog from 1968-69. I saw his ad in a magazine or comic book (I think) and ordered it (I was 12 or 13). I ordered a few things from him but quickly realized there were much better places to send my money. Still... I held on to the catalog... glad I did... fun to look through all these years later.

Vick Lawston! I think I got my first one in about 1960. It was more than a catalogue, and every copy block was entertaining to read. I thought of Lawston as the Stan Lee of magic.
Was sorry to hear he'd died in 1998. |

Hello There!
Passing by I really enjoyed reading from "memory lane" about my father, Vick Lawston. My own memories are more related to getting orders out as quickly and accurately as possible when I was allowed to help. I've posted a memorium about my father at http://www.ReflectivelyYours.com (see link bottom left column). Joel Hodgson, the great puppeteer and creator of Mystery Science Theatre produced an HBO and Comedy Special featuring "Pumpernickel and Vick" in a pretty funny spoof. I think my Dad was a pretty good sport and would have laughed his head off on this one. Bill Schmeelk (Wellington) and I are working on a "Retro Catalog" with memorabilia and many original copyrights. I'm also planning to make some Vick Lawston "Memory Mugs" his many friends and customers will be able to enjoy and share. Thanks for reading along. Cheers! Yeah, sure do remember Vick L and the wonderful catalog that I read hundreds of times per month as a kid....wanting EVERYTHING and affording very little. LOL, I can remember pouring over three dollars in nickles and pennies into an envelope for an order and having my mother watch me with a huge smile on her face. Wow, that was a very long time ago. Funny how time flys by. The only regret I have now is that I actually sold my only Vick L. catalog only a year or so ago. It was in perfect condition....damn, should have held on it!

Ken, I remember that order. Your coins arrived at The House of 1000 Mysteries wrapped inside a Fort Knox level of security: 39 feet of scotch tape.

Jeff, All laughter put aside:
If it wasn't for your fathers catalog...it would have taken this magician many years longer to actually have the ability to read. That is the truth. I was very "slow" in school and wanting so badly to read Vick Lawstons Catalog was a huge break-thru for me. "I'm in business just for fun?" No... he did much more than bring a little fun to some of us.I have for many many years wanted to personally share with your father this little story of the boy who learned to read because of a little black and white magic catalog that came in the mail. I thought you'd like to know that what your dad did for a living, helped so many of us in so many different ways. Thanks for keeping the memory alive. Magically, Ken Winters |

Well gentlemen, I was forced to pull down my 1968 copy of Vick's catalog from my bookshelf after browsing and finding this topic. I truly believe that Vick was "..in business just for FUN". I never have considered throwing away or selling the very first magic catalog I ever owned. What pleasure I had trying to imagine at 13 years old, how all of the miracles advertised could possibly be done. Since my first "magic bug bite" at eight years old, receiving Vick's catalog made me feel I had all the secrets of the world in my hands. Just seeing that catalog even today gives me the same thrill as when I was 13. First item I ever ordered was "Miracle Balloon-A-Trix" for $1.00.
Thanks to your father Jeff. He opened-up the world of magic for so many. I wish you success with your latest project. Even today I can truthfully say that "When I think of tricks- I remember Vick's".
The most astonishing thing about miracles is that they happen.
