I got a 2 hour trial at a local night club. I get free entry and free drinks (don't drink on the job) I got my trial this Sat at 10:30 pm. I was wondering what would one recommend for nightclub magic as I know the music will be loud.

If you're doing walk-around while music is playing, I'd recommend concentrating on very visual magic, for example the type found on the Shoot Ogawa/Apollo Robbins Cultural Xchange DVDs. There are other very visual effects as well -- floating borrowed finger ring, rising cards, bottle cap in bottle, animation effects, etc.

Ring on rope, silent cups and balls, torn and restored post it note (Osterlind's), various rope routines, six card repeat, manipulations... jumbo invisible deck.

There is a club that opened in Birmingham with a magic theme. I, for what reason I am not sure, was contacted to perform. This is your typical nightclub, loud music, wild lighting, and well... typical nightclub.
I asked my mentor if he would go as well. My mentor has 20+ years in restaurant and bar magic alone. I watched him do his thing, extremely well, I might add, and I worked outside on the city street corner for people as they were coming in the door. I eventually went inside and performed strolling as well. I did the following: Star Gazer, crazy man's handcuffs, ring and string, a coin routine which was mainly flourishes and ended with a muscle pass. My mentor did: his version of ambitious card, signed torn and restored card. Simply due to noise, the effects did have to rely more on visuality than on the spectator being able hear us communicate audibly. |

Imagine you were doing magic for people who did not speak the same language as yourself... what would you do in this instance? The same tricks will work for you in this club setting.
If it is dark, work very slowly. Pause often enough that the spectators can follow the premise. Since you don't have your voice to rely upon, take inventory and use whatever other resources you have at your disposal. You can learn to communicate without speaking. PM me and tell me what tricks are in your arsenal. I can help you more if I know this.

I've performed in a couple of loud bars/clubs in my time, and there has been almost impossible to comunicate to a group of guests through speech, therefore I second earlier posts. Keep it simple and visual with routines like: Flash paper coins across, D'lite, self levi, bill switch and some card flourishes.

Ok I've just done the trial it's 1:30 in the morning, no problems communicating apart from at a table of drunks, they loved the magic but there was one guy who goes I saw that (oh how I dislike these people) another table a lady did not want any magic so the rest were sad because they had to miss out. But apart from that I did 20 other tables which loved it all and I mean Loved it no communication problems and I came off the night £12 up on tips no problem. Although I had a pint (treasted by manager) before starting which actually really settled me well.

If you have control over your spectators, you could perform Hummer's whirling card -- this always gets great reactions, however, if they are drunk, they might grab at the card..

Jeff McBride honed many of his skills in this type of atmosphere. It's challenging to say the least.

Well I was going to use the hummer gimmick to make a card stand up but never got to it. As for challenging I wouldnt say it's challenging ,this type of club and atmosphere is perfect for me, now all I have to do is wait for the magic call saying yes or no if I'm hired.

I've just done 'em too many times, and they're just not fun! I now pass them on to fellow magicians.

Think of something with light....Penguin Magic has these neon glow-in-the-dark strips to put on a card for your floating card. hummer card/ ufo effect. I think it's called rave card. Also torched and restored from penguin, anything with fire probably. And don't forget d'lites....a perfect visual!!
Good Luck
