Hello my incredible coin conjurers.

As I’ve been getting a little back into magic I’ve really wanted to get solid at doing both the edge and thumb crotch palms (both of which sometimes are called Down’s palm, which is confusing) with a stack of 5-6 coins in both hands. I had gone through the motions in the past, but usually only performed with either a single coin, or did the classic miser’s dream. I have a couple questions that might seem very dumb/obvious to the pros, but I would really appreciate any comments.

1. How silent?
Is it possible to vanish 6 silver dollars into edge palm so quietly that someone standing in front of you in a quiet room wouldn’t hear? I can get pretty quiet, and could certainly improve, and I think I could get quiet enough that a small amount of talking or music would easily cover it; but is total silence possible?

2. And hints for among them quieter?
The more I practice, obviously, the more I figure out. For making coins appear I can often sort of drop them off the stack, making it noiseless, and I can get a vanish down to a very tiny click by having the coin either make contact with skin first, or touch the stack gently first. Idk, any other tips.

3. Aren’t palming coins supposed to be easier?
I bought a stack of Alan Wong palming coins, thinking that they would make learning easier, but they seem much harder than my silver dollars. They seems to slip very easily from the edge, and their (lack of) weight makes the whole stack get knocked out of positions very easily (that later is obviously me not having good enough technique). It made me wonder, are palming coins good because of their thinness, but actually a little more advanced than regular silver dollars?

Using soft, remilled silver dollars can help with edge palm noise. That way, you can drag the bottom coin off of the stack pretty much noiselessly. Also, a stack of soft coins takes up less space in your hand than uncirculated coins.

Just to clarify, does “soft” mean older, worn, coins? That definitely makes sense. I think mine are kind of halfway, they circulated, but they definitely aren’t smooth.

Yes, generally, soft means well worn, allowing you to rub them together with no noise.

Your initial post brings up several things. Soft coins are what you need. Palming coins are for holding many coins to be produced in front of a distant audience while the band plays. They are nice to play with but not what you need. Soft coins are coins with so much ware that parts of the coins are no longer visible. I go to the coin shop near me an ask for the silver sack. They drop a bag in front of me and I find the dollar coins that had little or no features left. These are the soft coins. They are ready to go off to be melted down. Rubbing them together makes no sound. I would prefer a better misdirection than an open moment when the sounds of coins can be heard. I've also learned that once the edges of coins come into contact, my edge grip, the rest of their interaction can be very quiet indeed.
