There is some conjecture that some of the artworks shown in the Volkmann book "The Oldest Deception" show routines like that. The most famous of these would be the Bosch painting called "The Conjuror." It shows two presumably metal cups and a conical cover. But those cups may be more symbolic than representational.

There really isn't anything new about two cup routines. Hofzinser did one.

But he didn't use that odd cover.

Smile A true replica of that painting is hanging here at the wall right beside me -with an old fashioned antic frame around- natural size as the original..IIRC, the original is in the Louvre in Paris..

The original original is lost, according to most "real" authorities, but the Louvre copy is probably very close to the original. I got one of those for my birthday this year. It is almost exactly the same size as the one you have, just a little smaller -- Norm Neilsen has them on his web site.

We took down two other objets d'arte to put this one up. Every real connoissieur of the cups should have this one.

MarcoM has one with his face painted over that of the conjuror!

It was a gift to MarcoM from one of his friends in the Netherlands. The fellow asked him for a profile photo, so he sent it. A few weeks later, here was this picture in the mail!

I thought it was really neat.

BTW, there is an interesting paper on this painting that explains some of the symbolism in it.

The writer misses on a couple of points, viz. the translation of the name of the book Malleus Maleficarum as The Witches' Mallot, normally we translate that as The Witches' Hammer, and a couple of other minor points, as well, but it is thought-provoking in any case.

Werner:

The fellow who painted MarcoM's face over that of the original Conjuror was Bill Rex.

I think MarcoM also has a copy of the original. I believe Bill Rex did these for several of his other friends as well.

And if you know MarcoM, then you will appreciate how appropriate it is, especially in the context of the Gertsman paper.
