I know this isn't new, but it is finally in my repertoire, and I must say, this is a baffling a trick with ropes as you can ever wish for.

People have no clue and you can't believe how well thought out the handling is.

It is a beauty of a prop and a beauty of a routine.

Now I need to Biro-ize it.

Scott Alexander has terrific additional phases for the routine on his Midnight Show DVD, as well.

I've been using Dean's box since last year.
The idea is not new, but this one kills, really kills.
The only one thing I'd like to change is the ring. I find that the clunk isn't loud enough and cant be herd if you have a noisey audiance.
I'm playing with the idea of using a much heavier ring.
What do you think guys?
Richard.

Michael Close has some excellent handling tips for the last phase of the routine that really sell it. He also discusses that he has opted to change the ring to something more substantial and tells you where to find them. All of this info, including his presentation, is in his e-book Closely Guarded Secrets. Highly recommended for Dean's Box users.

Just finished reading Mike Close's handling/routine of Dean's box.

I love his final phase.

A thought. I have "Jay's Jinking Rings" (a Jardine Ellis-Plus ring routine put out years ago by Jay Marshall). The rings with this set are perfect. Thick, chrome-plated, no seams... and a nice follow up to Dean's Box final phase would be to do the ring on rope with the Jardine Ellis gimmick.

Werner... if you get to the Netherlands, you MUST see Dan Le Fay do Dean Dill's box. Greatest presentation yet.

Although mine will be funnier Smile

I have an old gag that I used to do that will fit in perfectly with the box. Now all I need to do is find the olde prop!!!

This may be something I'll add to the repertoire.
What would you say is the largest crowd that could still see this and appreciate it?

I'm no longer working at the restaurant so now it's all stage shows. Also, do you think this would play w/ a younger audience? I can see the ghost patter working quite well Smile

I use the box in my show and I have no problem with small groups of up to 100 folks. I do find that a lot of times despite the patter and chatter with kids, the effect at first goes right over their heads. It also does to some extent for the elders. They just can't believe what they have just seen. The second phase then grabs their attention a little more and by round three, it just knocks them out.

I seem to remember that when it first came out, there was a mpeg of Dean performing the routine, but those mpegs seem to have disappeared off the net. Does anyone have those performance mpegs?

Bye for now

Here is a link to a demo at The Trickery. Howard is demonstrating, not Dean.

Alym... if you want a JUMBO STAGE VERSION, contact Dean, he might be able to make you one. He has one in his shop, it stands on four legs, etc. etc.

On the Alexander DVD, the lid of the box didn't seem to shut flush very well. Is this normal?

Pet, you are right about the Dan Le Fay routine. He was kind enough to send it to me and his premise going into the routine.

I find it works best with smaller groups and particulary well with doctor, lawer, and teacher types. I have also observed that most people do the box way too fast,

I am absolutely a fan of Scott's work. But I cringed when I saw him handle the Box. The fact that it did not close well has definitely to do with the way he handles it. But his routine is really something else!

Oh, Pete, you should ask Dean about his little anecdote concerning the Big Box! It's hilarious!!!

that will endure when mere facts are dust and ashes,
and forgot."

I need a haircut, so I guess I'll see Dean tomorrow or next day.

That is a funny story... Note, Dan: Dean sold another load of 'em at Magic LIVE... what a great item.

I do beat the hell out of the prop. Must be the illusionist in me.
But even though the lid doesn't close flush anymore, it still fools em'!

Scott... your routine is right up there. The best three I have seen, are yours, Mike Close's and Dan Le Fay's... other than Dean himself.

Soon, me. Smile
