Here's a new "Do As I Do" effect I'm playing around with.
Which version does the panel prefer? VERSION ONE ----------- 1. I invite spec to cut off half the pack and shuffle it. I shuffle my remaining half. 2. I ask spec to cut off half of her half and leave it face up on the table. I do the same. 3. I give her the face-down card I cut to, and she gives me the face-down card she cut to. 4. Those two face-down cards are placed on the two face-up piles and then each is buried under the remaining face-down cards. 5. I spread my packet face-down revealing (say) Three of Diamonds face up. 6. She spreads her packet face-down revealing a perfect match - the Three of Hearts! VERSION TWO ----------- 1. Spectator shuffles whole deck 2. I run through deck and pull out a couple of cards "for later". 3. Spectator cuts off half deck and we proceed as above. 4. Red threes are revealed. I say "I knew you wouldn't get a black three - they're over here." I turn over the cards put aside at the beginning to reveal Three of Clubs and Three of Spades. All thoughts gratefully received. Version 1.
Version 1 is about choosing the same card by coincidence or the magician picking the same card as a spec.... free choice is assumed here. Version 2 is about prediction, and therefore you knew they would pick a certain card, and not any other. This lets them think how they picked their card, and might discover the force. Two comepletly different effects, I'd say.... at least in the eyes of a laymen. Are you trying to show your powers of forsight and stuff?(picking out the 3 mates) or are you doing a "do as I do" effect where you both magically pick the same card(version 1) ? |

Yes, I'm inclinde to agree but I've been struggling to give the end of Version One the necessary "Ooomph". More than one spectator has commented that the effect seemed to finish prematurely.
Any other thoughts? Cheers Tom |

Version One seems almost identical to Vernon's "Four of a Kind" trick.

I personally like the original "Do as I do" whereby a card is freely selected and lost and then you both pick the same card.
It never fails to get an amazing reaction, and the suspense is built by having both cards face down, and turning them faceup only gets a great powerful ending. |

I would prefer version 1. You keep the original plot and you can do the effect impromptu without a second deck.

Version 1 for the reasons given by Daegs, but if I were the spectator I'd ask why the cards had to be buried and then spread to reveal them rather than just looked at after the cut. In other words, there's no logical reason to bury then spread.

You make a fair point, Craig, but don't forget they don't know what effect I'm going to do until the two cards are revealed at the end. I could be burying the cards for any number of reasons.
Thanks for all the feedback. Very helpful. Cheers Tom |
