Jealous or envious of what?
Most outlandish sequined costume? Most stereotyped persona? Most expensive props? Most antique and quaint props? Most impressive sleight? Most invisible pass? Most stylized actions to perform trivial task? Most tiresome card trick? Most confusing proving sequence? Best impression of vogue dancing by performer? IMHO there is not so much to covet or envy here. Lots of nice people and some fun performers. Or maybe we are envious of Mickey out in Florida having fun with his family while we wait for news of a DVD release? I almost envy those who are just starting to learn magic at this time. There is a huge amount of literature available, and the internet makes many of the distant experts accessible. It's almost worth buying Alex Elmsley and Andy Galloway PCs so they could join us online sometimes.

There is an author I read quite a bit of by the name of Terry Pratchett who I think must be a bit of an amateur magician because of the way he describes magic in his fantasy books. One of my favorite metaphor's by him is "when it comes to the use of sequins and rhinestones, magicians have all the taste and restraint of a deranged magpie". As to buying Elmsley a PC, wasn't Elmsley a programmer? I always thought he was very computer literate and that if he wanted to be on a message board he would be. Dave |

Jonathan, how about being J/E , we can not figure out how a certain slight or effect is done,or not being able to do a certain slight no matter how hard we tried, but some one else can..

There was a while when David Roth's work on the retention pass was like that. Sort of a clique secret in NYC. It's thanks to that kind of attempted brow beating that other folks went and invented their own sleights. Why reinvent their wheel when you could just as well invent your own.
In terms of watching magic... there are things in magic that I have no idea about. I just enjoy them. When the effect is intersting and it looks magical... I'm happy to watch. It's such a rare feeling. It's like being a layman again. That is the feeling I want to bring to others with my magic. A sort of happy/I have no idea state of mind.

There are some moves other folks do very well, that I can not do well, and have given up on. One is the classic pass. My handling is not Geoff Latta invisible. Watching him do the thing and not being able to make the move work smoothly got me frustrated. Sometimes I feel badly for giving up.
Same for the folks who have a great classic palm. I have wet hands my grip gets loosened after a few minutes. I did have one bad night when I finally gave up on dropping coins from my hands and crawled over to look at the fingerpalm stuff. There are folks who can do wonders with a memorized deck. There are folks who can read marked cards. I can't do either with any degree of comfort. And I'll never be a professional basketball player, football player or movie star. Okay. I can still enjoy my cup of tea.

Yes that is you ,but there are others who try and put their peers down for the reasons you mentioned. I have seen this many many times ...and this is Jealously.

I have met the most wonderful folks in the game...also a few who are the most arrogant with egos that wouldn't fit inside Godzilla before an attack on Tokyo. I enjoy ignoring them as they throw themselves around in delusion..they are few...they are, on the whole, insignificant except to their mirrors.

I have to agree with Jonathan Townsend. My Classic Pass is far from invisible and I don't carry around the arsenal of magician foolers. What I do is provide enough misdirection (hopefully) to cover my shortcomings. I've seen fellow magi perform feats that my hands would fail to accomplish no matter how much practice. Am I jealous, no. Am I envious, maybe a little but not to the point it impacts how I act and carry myself. Do I give up on performing? Not on your life. It reminds me of this thread. This guy was performing and enjoying his work. The rest of the group was picking his performance apart and explaining how they could do it better. Was it jealousy or envy that sent that thread south?

I used to do a minor escape act. I say minor because I really didn't have that much knowledge...just a few routines that I enjoyed performing. I had put away my birds and tricks and Illusions etc. and did the EA as a way to eat regularly.
It was accepted by the public (albeit mostly drunks in bars) but it was fun and I didn't give a lick about being a locksmith or a daredevil...I had a crummy little comedy act and was getting $200 a week to have a good time around topless dames. Life was good. There were a few 'challenges' (give me a break) from those more serious than I...(some right in the middle of my act, how rude!)...I say more serious than I because I don't know how to say they had their head up their butt in the polite company of this forum. The few elements of my act, all ungimmicked, I was doing well and was proficiant...the humor worked for me and the customers...so why in hell would I give a hoot about some moron busting up my act to prove they are a better 'Gunslinger' than I? The fact is I was working...they were not. So what was it that made me leave the EA game behind besides that I felt it was ENTERTAINMENT not some cheesy competition? Well aimed Jealousy, Envy, Arrogance at me, or my not having the biggest ego in town? Funny business this...I can just see a hot shot magician standing up DURING a dove act and shouting a challenge to pull birds faster or that the performer was using tricks and shopped at Tannen's! It was the 'few' that gave me the wrong impression that it was not for me. I held and hold respect to this day, the knowledge and dedication many EAs have for their chosen path. I just don't see Emmit Kelly running up to Lou Jacob's with a challenge of brooms and spotlights in the middle of a show. Let's not pick on just EAs either..."I have heard..."WHAT! You don't do a double lift with a side slide to the bottom left of an articulation jiggle flip!!!!?? And you're a magician? HA!" The answer should be in some cases..."...no...I'm a guy/gal who loves to entertain people and have fun and maybe help kids find some direction...and I bought these tricks a few years ago and I'm still learning...and I can't sing or dance but I can pull a mean dove and aren't you specual..." Sorry Vinny...I've waited 37 years to get this out. By the way the few challenges I did accept...I won. How? I cheated. Who cares. Doug My thumb cuff escape is funnier than your thumb cuff escape.

I have to agree with Darkrider, there is so much Bull slinging in the EA community that it is enough to scare anyone away. So many arguers say it is not an ego or a hurt pride thing.... if you have to point it out then obviously it is.
Next let me state that I'm not free of the bull and have gotten into it myself, sometime there is justification, sometimes just for fun and others because I'm sick of it all. There are a few bad eggs in the EA community that the so called "art" could really do without. What is sad is that I hear mentalism is just as bad if not worse. I don't believe it is jealousy or envy, what it is is a group of people who never grew up and still have the school yard bully mentality, people who do not understand what being a REAL adult means. Gimmicked vs. skill, one prop vs another, who cares? If it does what you need it to and gets the reaction you are hoping to get from the audience then who gives a flying leap? I have watched so many good aspiring EA's leave because they are sick of the arguing that it is sad really. By the way, my assistant is WAY better looking than your assistant X-treem PS. Hi Ian

I learned that to envy is to covet...to want what others have. Jealousy is Envy + fear, namely the fear of loss.
Envy runs rampant in this industry, historicaly evidenced by numerous thefts of creators' routines, lines, and personas. This envy will never go away. I cannot offer a solution as I have none. I can only offer that I will never knowingly swipe someone else's material....ever. Jealousy...I'm not so sure about...I don't know enough people to say...and even then...I wouldn't. Patrick
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |
