My view would be that envy mostly arises from people who want to copy other acts and want certain effects they do not possess.
In my case I don't envy any one because I try to make my stuff the best instead of copying and if you look at any one experienced such as Banachek or Osterlind you find that they don't so much try to copy any one else's effects, the similar effects they might have came from them coming up with an effect in the first place and figuring out how to do it, in my opinion this is they way out of envy. I much prefer discussing psychology with other mentalist or magicians rather then effects.

Much of the envy, jealousy and hypocrisy comes from a sense of frustration that occurs when a person sees someone whom they perceive as somehow less talented than they are doing something that they wish they had the opportunity to do.
These misguided people seldom understand that any stature a performer may have attained depends on factors that they may not be aware of. For example, let's take the case of David Blaine, a man that many people resent. He got a TV special with apparently little talent or skill. So a lot of people feel somehow slighted and affronted by this. What they don't realize is that David produced a video, took it to the network, made his case, and explained why he would be the right person to reach a particular market. He did this on his own. These jealous people will make the excuse, "well, I don't have time to do that," or "Well, I don't live in New York." So, make the time. Move there. But don't gripe about someone else's success. Blaine's success doesn't diminish anyone else at all. "Well, he didn't pay his dues," some of the oldtimers say. They said that about Copperfield. They said it about Henning. They said it about Kreskin. I remember. I was there. I heard it. The key -- find what you do best. Do it. Enjoy the results. At least you will have some. If you don't do anything, you will die a withered old jealous person. And nobody wants to do that.

I heard this somewhere but I can't recall exactly where....,"Those who can do, those who can't talk."
I see Jelousy and envy as "something " that is alive and kicking in the community. Even the victims are hesitant to admit it publicly.

It's worth learning the distinction between the words.
Jealousy comprises a form of envy, and also implies a feeling of personal claim which is not present in envy. Jealousy also pertains to feelings of ownership/entitlement to the attentions/sentiments of a third party. One has to do with wanting similar/same 'stuff' as possessed by another. The other is about to getting the notice given to another, IE stealing the publicity/audience etc.

There is another kind of misdirected negative emotion that I have seen in the magic community. I have even been guilty of it myself, until I learned to recognize it for what it is. That is misplaced blame for personal failure. Sometimes it actually has a basis in fact. Let me give you an example of it, and then I'll tell you the truth about it, and how to make it go away. Nerdwell the Mediocre has a mediocre act, but he has difficulty getting jobs. Another magician, Geekini, who isn't really very good, but who selss himself, keeps getting the jobs Nerdwell wants, and worse, keeps bragging to everyone in the community about all of the great jobs he is getting. So Nerdwell spends most of his time hating Geekini, and every time he gets rejected for a booking, he obsesses on it, until it begins to affect his performances. Geekini has become Nerdwell's nemesis. Nerdwell doesn't really envy Geekini, nor is he jealous of him in the classic sense, but he blames Geekini for his failures. What to do? First of all, if you have a nemesis, forget about him. Find your real nemesis, the one person who is really responsible for your failures. I'll tell you where to find him. Go into your bathroom and look in the mirror. There he is! The only person who is really responsible for your success or your failures is YOU! Once you figure that out, and set about improving yourself rather than hating your nemesis, you will begin to see an improvement in every aspect of your magic. You will become a better person, and you will be more fun to be around. This, too, will be reflected in your magic.

Somewhere between frustration with one's one efforts, and admiration of another's results is a door to the land of envy. A wrong turn if ever there was one.

However, just across the hall is the door to progress. It's marked "inspiration." Some people mistake the "envy" door for the "inspiration" door, and that's when they get into trouble.

I think that one of the reasons that this happens is that in magic there is a clash of ego's between magicians.
When two magicians me for the first time it can become a contest of "can you top this"... I have seen that clash with close friends and bitter rivals. I do not claim to be an expert in magic and my only goal in magic is to use it to put food on the table by doing shows. And to become a better person each day... And some days that is a real reach....
