I was just wondering, I was eventually looking to do magic as maybe a side business, but not as a profession. do any of you do this, and if you do, do you have any advice on how to get started or how to prepare, you know, things like that???

Sure and I will try to get things started and help where I can. You asked a very vast question so I will just try to go over some basics for you and then ask a few questions and we can take it from there.
I got started doing exactly what I think it is your wanting to do. I consider my self a full time pro that works mainly weekends and evenings. This works ideal for me because I have a full time day job that I simply love and ebjoy but the magic allows me my creatiove freedom and helps in my love for performing. BUT, even though I only work weekends and evenings, I still work as hard at it as anyone I know. Just because you may not be doing it full time, does not mean you should cut corners or take it any less serious then a full timer. The rules and hard work still applies. The first thing of many that you will need to decide upon is just what magician or what market you really want to cater to. By this I mean.. are you a kid's show performer, are you a festival performer do you see yourself doing illusion shows or many close up and coporate work? Only you can answer that and you need to think long and hard just who you are as a magician and what road or path you want to travel down. There is nothing wrong with getting your feet wet and trying out different markets. The only thing is that you need to eventually focus if you really want to go anywhere. The problem is too many magicians and even part-time pros try to be a jack of all trades. This is very hard to do because you really can not perfect and hone your skills enough to bt the best at your particular market speciality as you can. Your too busy trying to be everyone and everything that you growth seems to stop. Well once you have figured out an idea of what avenue you want to travel down and thr market you want to start out with, the next thing your going to want to do is make sure you have a good show. This may sound like a dumb question, but you would be surprised how many performers jump into paying shows way before they are ready to. TAKE YOUR TIME. Spend the proper amount of time building your show and researching and getting the show exactly where it needs to be. Too many people make the mistake of jumping into paid shows way before the show is even at a state that it should be shown to people. Once you have a show, you might start by offering to perform free shows in your local area. Maybe tie it in with a library or a chamber of commerce. The idea here is to simply get out there and test your show without the fear and weight of getting paid hanging over your shoulders. Once your show is set up and tested and you have your target market pretty much figured out, you really need to learn a lot about a word most magicians fear. This word is MARKETING!!! Yes, even magicians need to be business minded. That means the phone will not ring off the hook if people do not know who you are and what you have to offer them. Go to the bookstore and read aboput marketing techniques. Also go to thedean.net. It is an awesome website that is 100% free that is aimed at helping the entertainer learn about marketing techniques. Trust me the stuff REALLY works and makes a HUGE difference. Then once you start to learn about marketing, you will need to aquire good promotional items and a promo packet or kit. PLEASE do not skimp on this. Always remember that often times the first impression a suspect or prospect gets of you is the materials you send out to them. Make them top quality and spend the time and money to have them done right. This really can make a huge difference. Well I will let all of this sink in and allow you to ask questions and for others to add in their 2 cents worth before I go off into other things that may interest you. I hope I atleast helped you a bit and gave you some things to think about. Please feel free to PM me or e-mail me directly at magic4u02@aol.com I would be more then happy to help you out in any way that I can. Good luck and I am sure you will LOVE performing again. Kyle
