Same thing. The most powerful that you can easily get is the M-10 from Chazpro. Most folks use the M-5 for ease of hiding. The M-10 is a 'stationary' model that is not worn. That magnet site has some good ones too.
Poke around here with the search engine.

I always thought a PK magnet was just a very powerful magnet that could be used to do PK effects. And that rare earth magnets are often sold as PK Magnets because of their strength, though very large ceramic PK magnets also are sold.

Any powerful magnet will work. You need one with a field that will penetrate a table top. Or whatever else needs penetrating.

Where can I get a magnet like the one used for the needle routine in the Steinmeyer book Device and Illusion?

Radio shack usually has a fair amount of these of all different sizes, depending on location. Check the Radio Shack website for local availability (or you can order directly from there). Another avenue to persue would be any sort of science store. These aren't usually too difficult to find.

I removed the magnet from the magnetron of a discarded microwave oven to do efects with. They will penetrate a table top and allow a wonderful floating ring type effect. The only drawback is that they are a little bulky, about 3" diameter.
