Okay, Vlad. I was always under the impression that Roger Crabtree's emerged earlier, and there was a Walt someone's (can't think of the surname at the moment - Rollins?) who had a linking card thing but, again, don't know the dates. Perhaps you can find them. HL.

A quick Google turned up
http://geniimagazine.com/magicpedia/Cardboard_Connection where it says that the manuscript was released 1977. I've no idea if that was the first publicaton of linking cards, but I'd not be surprised since it's a pretty strange and wonderful idea. Typical Paul Harris. Would love to hear any earlier references. [Edit: I see Vlad already provided the reference.] As for Sixten Beme's card linking I much prefer his Complete Card Link over the One Card Link, as the gaff is easier to make and there is no discrepancy in the tears which makes a great souvenir they can keep and show around all they want. /Tomas |

Mr. Lorayne,
That could very well be. Going from the copy in my hands here. However, I will research it more completely. It may well be that Harris' Cardboard Connection came "later" but may have beaten the others in terms of wider availability first. Namaste, Vlad PS: Just saw your post Tomas. Thanks for the help. |

From MagicPedia, under the heading "Linking Cards"
According to this, Crabtree's version came one year after Harris. Linking Cards A plot created by Paul Harris wherein the centers of two or more cards are torn out, then the resulting card rings are made to link and unlink à la Linking Rings. Published Versions (1977) Cardboard Connection by Paul Harris. The world's first linking-card routine. Uses two cards, one of which is gaffed, and was originally published by Chuck Martinez as a one-trick manuscript. Reprinted in The Art of Astonishment, Book 2 (Harris, 1996). (1978) The Crabtree Connection by Roger Crabtree. A variation of Paul Harris' Cardboard Connection utilizing an alternate gaff, published by Supreme Magic Co. as a one-trick manuscript. (1979) The Best Gosh-Darn Impromptu Linking Card Effect You'll Ever See, by Harry Lorayne. Published in Quantum Leaps (Lorayne, 1979). (1980) Ed Marlo's Linked Card Routine, published in Don England T.K.O.'s written by John Mendoza. (1983) The Immaculate Connection, by Paul Harris, published in the New Stars of Magic series (Vol. 2, #1). An impromptu method using three cards (as opposed to two), thus allowing for a wider variety of "links." Performed by David Copperfield on national television shortly after its publication. Reprinted in The Art of Astonishment, Book 2 (Harris, 1996). (1983) Chain of Thought by Michael Weber, a one-card linking effect published in Genii 1983 March. (1986) Boromian Link, by Terri Rogers. A version of The Immaculate Connection published as a one-trick manuscript (sold with sample cards) by Martin Breese. Does not require gaffs but isn't impromptu due to an exacting procedure for cutting out the centers of the cards. The advantage (some feel) is a more aesthetically pleasing linking and unlinking sequence. (1988) Linking Cardboard by Toru Suzuki. Published in New Magic of Japan (Kaufman & Goldstein, 1988). From the introduction (pg. 98) - " Instead of linking two playing cards together, the performer introduces four small squares of cardboard, each with a large hole cut out in the center. Despite the fact that there do not appear to be any slits, these four squares are magically linked together one at a time, then visually unlinked." (1993) Osmosis by Sylvain Mirouf. A four-phase linking-card routine using only two cards that employs The Immaculate Connection as its jumping-off point, but quickly veers into more topological areas. First published in France as a one-trick manuscript, then later reprinted in The Art of Astonishment, Book 2 (Harris, 1996). (1996) One Card Link by Sixten Beme, distributed by El Duco. The center of one card is torn out and discarded, then, from the remaining card frame, a new inner frame is torn out, whereupon the resulting card ring is linked to the card frame. (2006) Hypercards by Andrew Mayne. Impromptu two-card method released as a one-trick DVD. Distinct from other impromptu methods in that the two cards never actually link, though the illusion of their being linked is perfect. (2008) One Card Link by Ben Williams. A non-impromptu, one-card linking-card effect wherein the center of a single card is torn out, then the center of the excised piece is torn out, whereupon the resulting ring is magically linked to the card frame. The linked pieces can then be given away as a souvenir. Namaste, Vlad |

Walt's I've never heard of. Maybe Harry can provide some extra info about it?

While Harris' goes back to 1977 some are aware that this effect was done years before that with rings of steel.

I managed to dig up "The Complete Card Linking" manuscript by Sixten Beme. It was published in 1979, which would be a good credit to add since it leaves the cards genuinely linked.

I was a big fan (and still is!) of Paul Harris IMMACULATE CONNECTION then I saw Sylvain Mirouf OSMOSIS on TV and was completely fool. Enough anyway to take contact in France to order a VHS copy on the instructions. As a result that I did this routine in a show I did in the summer of 1998 (three months, 7/7). People went wild each and every time I did it. Since then, I perform it from time to time and always have very good reactions.

Well, anyway, according to your list, Vlad, mine was the first impromptu method. I never knew Paul's version (still don't). Fact is, I didn't know of any version when I devised mine, based on an existing idea of The Kidd's (LaGerould) - I think. It's a few decades ago, so a bit dim in my mind (as are many things!). Harry,
I just discovered your impromptu linking cards! Awesome impromptu effect. I would say this is my new favorite linking card routine. I have others, including Paul Harris' booklet. Not to take anything away from his fantastic work, but your routine is definitely my favorite. KJ |

What harry Lorayne said in his first reply. Honestly, I have never seen or done his versions of the linking cards. I've always stuck with Immaculate Connection. However, when the methods of established, ling time, successful pros like harry Lorayne are panned out of hand on a forum, I can't help but think--rather conclude--that the person making the comment either doesn't understand the method, doesn't understand misdirection, or just plain screwed up the effect.

So BBM released Stephen Tuckers Missing Link (which had appeared on of his previous DVD's sets. $6 so went for it. It is visual and for the most part easy to do. Hardest part I have in doing this is trying to tear 3 playing cards which are folded, guy must have super strong fingers as he makes it look fairly easy! Oh and cards can be signed and handed out at the end. Here is a link to the performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0OeNAgyVkk If anyone knows of any tips on tearing 3 folded cards would love to hear them!

Osmose by Sylvain Mirouf, his pitch in rime about the jeweler makes it an amazing story along a very visual miracle
