I am doing an effect where a metal penny is needed. I found the steel pennies from the 40's but now I need to paint them to look like any other penny...HELP...does anyone have any experience in this dept.?

Don’t bother to paint them. Have them copper plated. I think that Edmund Scientific has a kit that will allow you to copper plate a small object. OR, you could contact your favorite magic dealer and he/she will be happy to sell you several of these pennies already plated for you. A buck of penny is pretty cheap to get a coin that will pass inspection. Paint will look like paint!

I hope this helps a little.

Mumblepeas has it right ; plating is the way to go - if you can really get away with a 1945 "wheatie" penny..

You can also go to a local libray and learn how to plate with some reasonably common items, etc.

But the date, and very distinctive Shafts of wheat on the back may be an issue, if the penny is examined at all. But if you think it will work for you, they really are steel, then go for it and good Luck.

About 10 years ago I bought a bag of 50 or so and still havent done anything magical with them - mostly because of the difference in modern pennies and these. But many I am just being too cautious.

Good Luck!
