Does David Copperfield own copyrights to all the music he performs to? can he take some kind of action against someone if that person uses the music that he uses in his shows in there own?

Copperfield pays fees to liscensing companies (such as BMI or ASCAP) and/or gets permission from individual groups or artists to use copyrighted songs. He does not own the music used in his shows.

There are a lot of things you need to be aware of when using music in your production. You can't just "pick" something and use it. (legally)

There are a lot of discussions in this forum on music.

Do a search for "music license" or "music rights"

Did you see that?

If you are thinking of using music that Copperfield has used...I would strongly suggest being original, and finding your own music.

Actually, unless David Copperfield is the producer of the show (as in his television specials), he is not responsible for the licensing fees. The producer of the show is responsible.

As for using the same music as he is, if it's commercially available and the proper licensing arrangements have been made, you can use it. I wouldn't use the music with the exact same trick he is using, though, because that would be ripping off his presentation.

I would like to find his (performing) music but it is doubtful.

Hi I believe that a cd was released.

Also Phil Colins and Peter Gabriel tracks are often used.

There was a site that I came across one time with the listing of music used for his shows. You do a google search on DC and search threw all the sites. I am sure you will ponder on that site.

DC used a nice eclectic mix of music, you can get most of it. Some of it is no longer in print and very hard to find.

I once heard, (from Andre Kole I think) that David has spent up to $50,000.00 to use a single track of music for a TV special. If I remeber coectly the illusion was Origami. that's enough to buy eight origami illusions and still have enough to buy a decent sound system... ouch

Of course those rates are based on the benefit derived from using the works. For a David Copperfield special, that is enormous.

The rights to use music on TV is far different that in a live theatre. In theatre, restaurant, radio station, etc, ASCAP, BMI have their set rates.
Using a song on Television or in a movie, one must attain Sync Rights. That fee is up to the owner of the song.
That is one of the reasons Gary Ouellet created new original music for The Worlds Greatest Magic tv shows.
