Hello All,
I am very glad to be here. I am hoping to tap the broad range of intellegence here as I have little background in magic. I have been building the above mentioned props for approximately three years now and have learned quite a lot about the mechanics and the people who made them. Now I am interested to learn some of the history behind the props. I am aware of the Owen / Thayer lineage but I have a feeling that they were not the "frst" to make these props. can anyone tell me of how these props came to the US? I also believe that there is a distinction between ball VASES and pill boxes. Can anyone provide insight there as well? Since I've started maikng these props I have seen, only recently, the trick performed only once by and older retired gentleman. It was somewhat impressive(albeit shaky)I wonder where I can see the trick performed by a pro. Can anyone point me inthe right direction? Video? DVD? Website? Funny to me now, is that since I have learned to make these things, I crave to learn how to use them! So many tricks, so little time. Peace, out A

Welcome to the forum. Would love to see samples of your work. Do you have a website? Have you seen Jim Riser's magical woodturning site on vases/pillboxes? The Stones of Tutankhamun is a great routine using contrasting colored balls and vases. |

The Ball Vase idea first appears in Sports and pastimes: or, Sport for the city, and pastime for the country; with a touch of hocus pocus, or leger-demain (1676).
It can also be found in Jacques Ozanam's Récréations Mathématiques et Physiques (1693), and Henry Dean's The Whole Art of Legerdemain: or Hocus Pocus in Perfection (1722). There's some information on the Pill Box at the Magic Lineage Project (www.lybrary.com/mlp): http://www.lybrary.com/mlp/item.php?item=186 The topic has also been discussed in this thread: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......30&4 |

Trixie Bond, the children's entertainer used to use a Morison's Pill Box in her kid show. She had no idea how unusual or rare a prop it was, and she used it quite effectively.
Many of these were produced in Germany before WW I. I have a suspicion that they were sold by Roterberg. You might check with Ted Bogusta at Martinka's and see if he has any records of the people who owned the shop before he did importing any of these from Germany in the days before the Great War.

What is a pill box today?
And does anyone use an egg cup? I like the ideas OF the props, just seem to miss the context that makes them pertinant. Has anyone done an eggs act using Faberge Eggs? If you know the story... imagine what eggs are not shown in public and what other stuff the guy must have made

I have , in fact, an Egg Box on the drawing board. It will take some time to get it to become reality. However, once you see it, I hope you will jsut have to have one.

How about a MODERN pill box that makes sense to folks who take medications?
How about an MP3 holder thingie that allows you to display/use the thing and carry it otherwise? Eggs? Balls? What is that about?

The name came from a large pill (not as large as the ball in the pill box) that was in common use during the century before last. An egg box makes a bit more sense, if you are familiar with egg holders, such as those that are in common use in Europe. Anyone ever seen an "egg cozy?"

I have to say that I have become a big fan of Angelo's work. And of Angelo himself. I've seen the output of almost every major woodturner in magic, and Angelo's work is THE BEST!

Bill,
Over the few short years I've known you, I have become one of your biggest fans. I never have had a question about magic that you have not been able to answer. Sometimes you answer my question before I have a chance to ask the it! I appreciate your kind words. They mean a great deal to me A

I ditto Bill's comments. Angelo's choice of beautifully grained exotic woods and design makes his pillboxes worthy of an art museum not just some collector's shelf.
