Whilst reading about the terrible Florida storm damage and the casualties I read the following:

"A man who stepped outside his house to smoke a cigarette died when a banyan tree fell on him in Fort Myers, authorities said."

Anti smoking irony aside, it's tragic events such as this that fascinate me. Fate is a peculiar thing; being in the wrong place at the wrong time; "Another second and the car would have hit me."; or in this case if the guy had been out of cigarettes, or the phone had rung just before he stepped outside.

How many times have you been out driving and perhaps someone has hurtled round a bend towards you on the wrong side of the road - if you'd been just another hundred yards further. Perhaps you stopped to tie your shoelace before setting off, which meant getting behind a bus which slowed you down, which meant you missed a collision.

This also leads off into other areas, such as coincidence, predestination or freewill, probability, and, I suppose, ultimately the existence of a supreme being.

Has anyone else had one of these moments? Do you wonder about how close you came to disaster? Or are you fairly laid back and accept whatever this strange existence we call Life throws at you?

Someone posted an amazing story just a few days ago. It's a few threads down, called "almost died today".

You took the words out of my mouth. I think about things like that all the time. My mom's friend went for a walk and she had dropped something before on the path. She went back to find it and she met her now current husband. What if she hadnt droped that or decided it wasnt worth going back? Strange how such small things can have huge impacts. Nice post.

It may just be.
