My name is Closeupmaster, and I'm a magiholic. I'm sure I started out like most of you. A card trick here and there, a spongeball routine at the end of the day
"just to relax". Eventually, "Scotch and Soda" just wouldn't satisfy me; I had to do a 2 copper, 1 silver "chaser". And pretty soon I was saving all of my cigarettes so I could do just "one more" cigarette through quarter trick. But it wasn't just affecting me. I was badgering friends to "Take a card, any card. Come on, one trick won't hurt you". It wasn't too long before I was doing lines of patter right before bed just to take the edge off. I NEED HELP.
I'm Closeupmaster, and I'm a Magician.

Hi Closeupmaster!

The first step to recovery is admitting who you are, and recognizing that you need help!

We have all been there. Some of us more than once.

I once tried to stop "cold turkey", but as soon as I found out that was the name of a new card/coin effect, I was hooked all over again.

And I came back here for help again! You are safe here.

We all know your stuggle and feel your pain!

We are all recovering magicians here!

Close up Master and David,

As a Nearly Normal Substance Abuse
Counselor, Prevention Specialist,
Laughologist and Magician,
I couldn't resist.

With Tongue firmly in my cheek!

Step 1. I am powerless over my addiction (magic) and my wife is unmanageable.

Step 2. Came to believe a power greater then myself (Reed, Randy, Jay, Dai...) can restore me to sanity.

Step 3. Made a decision to turn my will and my life over to god (good orderly direction of a mentor) as I understood him.

Step 4. Made a fearless moral inventory
(looked at my strengths weakness and ego)
....
.....
....
Now can we close this meeting and go get some more coffee.

How about some more close up at Applebees
or T.G.I.F. Fridays. (That's where we go after Ring 129's meetings.

With some seriousness, when I got into magic in the mid 70's, I had to buy everything.
It all looked so good.

Although I do still make some purchases at
Magic Shops I also frequent $$ Stores,
Antique Shops, Estate Sales and even garage sales.

AND my wife IS very supportive of my magic.
She has a great acting and directing background. In fact we just completed a lecture for the local Society of Young Magicians on Stage Craft and Magic.

KEEP COMING BACK. This digest is GREAT!

LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL

Instead of doing 12 steps I just thought that I would try the "Six Steps" and just repeat it twice. The only problem was that when I finished 3 steps and threw them away, I would always end up with six steps again.

RC4MAG,

Re Corinda's good book, I think you missed a step. Hope you didn't hurt yourself.

Absolutely, they have even set aside a special room for us to meet, and said we could have anything that we can imagine.

They said it is real nice. They said it is decorated in calming colors, has no windows so people won't see our "magic secrets", the doors only open from the outside, so we won't be disturbed while meeting, and the walls are nicely padded, so ....

Hey Wait a Minute!!!

Whew, they almost got me that time..

I don't have a problem. I can stop anytime I want. I've done it hundreds of times.

I know what you mean. I even have tricks and books that will probably never see the light of day.
It's like a drug or something. I've tried to go cold turkey without much luck. There needs to be a MA (Magic Anominous) or something like that. My poor wife, she has picked at least a million cards.

WOW a rehab for magicians. My girlfriend would make sure I made every meeting. But she won't let me have any donuts. She's trying to watch my weight. We won't even mention coffee after 8pm. Then again in my line of work that's usually the only time I get to drink coffee. You should see the looks I get when people at the airport hear that I am a magician and an aircraft inspector. Makes them a little nervous I think. But I tell them I do the magic to keep my sanity. Or is it I work, I work to stay sane. Oh well, either way is fine.

I found some limited help with "The Patch" for various addictions. I place mine on my leg or arm so it is not seen by my friends. It usually contains a rare earth magnet. It gives off a calming floating sensation. Others have used it and tell me time seems to stop. I can't recommend it enough.

My advice: Stay away from anything involving cards, wands, coins, ropes, chains, fire, water, any and all books or videos or magazines pertaining to magic....geez, the way this list is going I may as well get out my dictionary. Smile
If anyone sees my sanity, please return it to

me.

*Meanwhile at the Houdini home for recovering magicians*

"Will he be alright, doctor?"

"It's to early to tell, he stoped levitating about an hour ago but he's only in the very earliest stages of coin withdrawl."

*a nurse rushes up to the pair*
"Doctor, come quikly. One of the residents is doing a cups and balls routine with his medication again!"

"Doctor, will I be able to perform a Zombie after this procedure?"

"I don't see why not."

"That's funny, I never could before! Smile "
"There's no time to lose," I heard her say.

I think my partner is thinking of changing her name to 'magic' at least then when I tell people about the love of my life, she feels included!! Smile
The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science. Whoever does not know it and can no longer wonder, no longer marvel, is as good as dead, and his eyes are

Brandon Harper's opening post was funny and about magic. Imagine that.

Shame we don't hear more from him on these pages.
