Hello all,

I am looking for a good bowl to use for the benson bowl routine. I have one that I found 20 years ago, it is brass and just right. I am looking to replace it as it is getting old. I have searched gift shops and the internet and can't seem to find a nice, plain, brass bowl. I need on that is 5" in diameter and 2.5 -3 inches deep.

Any suggestions or comments are welcomed.

thanks,

Sorry, if I find one, I keep it for myself..Smile

I'm aiming for a rather heavy one, at least heavy enough to hold a kind of spong-burger down that fills almost the bowl..and as equally important, it has to have a rim on the bottom, because I fancy to turn it over using the stick.-It also can be grabbed with the fingers of one hand and lifted due to that rim..
That rim is a MUST..(for me)

Third thing is, it has to have a bell like ring when held at the rim in one hand, opening face up, and the opening is tapped with the stick held in the other hand.
The one I use does..but unfortunately it is not brass nor copper, nor bronce, but a french porcelin-soup-bowl by brand of Service Bistrot, Creation Jaques Lobjoy, model depose, porcelaine d'auteul, Paris-France.
It does all above described it should do, the only drawback is, it isn't of metal..
Also that bottom rim does keep a spongeball without rolling off, when the bowl is upside down..

I got lucky by going to fammily dollar and other dollar stores. Also another great store to shop for magic is big lots.

And anywhere that they sell brass things to put plants in. I hope this helps.

Yes..well....I have 5 bowls, 2 off them of porcelain, the other 3 of metal..one nicely in copper (baking form for cakes), but the porcelain one I use is still *the best* for me..the metal ones are not heavy enough Smile (thin walls) Smile
I'm still looking...

I got lucky and found a perfect brass bowl at a thrift store for $1.48. This thing is heavy, and I mean HEAVY! When you strike the bottom with a wand, it rings loud and clear like a bell. I use a rubber hamburger dog toy for the final load and it's darn near a custom fit.

I have some for sale that are very unique, engraved, and have a special feature that makes them work better. I have two style. So anyone interested send me an email at petebiro@aol.com and in a day or two will send you a photo and price.

In addition, I include the Rezvani Tomato Trick instructions (actually uses two bowls, but can be done just as well with one).

Bink:

By all means, see what Pete has to offer first. But let me offer you a general suggestion. Whenever you decide to work with at trick like the Benson Bowl routine, take a trip to your local flea markets and resale shops. You would be surprised what kinds of nifty goodies you can find there.

I have a lacquered bowl from Russia that is perfect for the routine.

But Pete has done the Benson Bowl routine forever. Well, almost forever, and I'll bet he has something interesting to offer. So I'm going to check with him, too.

Bink, check out Mike Caveney's book, "MagiComedy." In it is a Benson Bowl routine with the cup of a plunger. Just a cheap alternative!

I have been looking for years for the perfect brass bowl. I found one years ago but short of cash I opted to return later. You can guess the rest of the story.
My daughter, bless her heart found a wonderful silver plated bowl, small and with some round feet. At first I didn't like it since I had my mind fixated on brass, but it just holds the bagel load, which actually looks bigger than the bowl and it has the nicest chime when struck with the stick.

I have since found two other bowls that fit the bill, one a bambo "chinese" type rice bowl and the other a colorful wooden bowl. Both look and work great but I just can't trade the thud of a wooden bowl for the chime of a metal bowl so I keep the silver bowl with the round feet.

I would love to check out Pete's but with the amount of people who frequent this board and the integrity Mr. Biro has, I am willing to bet they are gone now.

I use a silver plated flower bowl, the type designed for a table "centre-piece". It has a wire mesh/grid top for the flower stalks (removable), and a kind of pedestal foot. It has a nice weight, and if you have Pat Page's sponge ball tape he has a subtle routine for a bowl of this type, utilising the foot part of the bowl. Better still, these bowls can be found quite frequently in junk shops, car boot sales etc.

Pete: I've just ordered a set of your Johnny Paul Cups from Stevens Magic. I've wanted a set of cups like this for years - thanks for producing them!

I used a rubber toilet plunger with the stick for a wand, probably before Caveney was born... If you get one with the right kind of inner ridge you can "trap" a sponge ball with it, much like a reverse shell game move.

John Cornelius used a Revere candy bowl for the Benson Bowl routine. His idea was very clever. Look in his book for the award-winning routine.

I was in India last year doing some shows there and stumbled on a very nice hand crafted Tibetan bowl.I'm not sure what metal it is but according to the seller a few hundred years old. It has a few dings and stuff, but I really like it. Got to get the routine down. Been planning it for ages.

The bowl I found at a Thrift store looks very much like these. It makes a beautiful ring when struck, so it just may be...

Let's se how it handles first...

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention craft stores as another good source!

Mike

When searching for items like these...the best places, at least for me are antique stores, or places like the Goodwill or Salvation army shops...you will be amazed at the things you can find.
