I cared a lot for "Chuckles" but there was one very negative situation worth thinking about.
Charlie was booked to lecture in London. Card men from all over the U.K. came to see him. I mean the top guys... the real workers... and they travelled great distances. When Charlie lectured what did he tip? The Chinese Sticks, Rice Bowls, Rising Pencil, etc. No inner card work at all. They were more than just slightly disappointed. They were baffled. Maybe Chosse knows why?

Pete,
I've heard that story too! And I'm as baffled as you. Charlie steadfastly refused to discuss it the one time it was broached in my presence. I could venture a guess, but that's all it would be, so - no point in doing so... I will say this, the material you mentioned in your post was Charlie's WORKING MATERIAL, the stuff he did in his "for the public, for the money" shows! So, if you want dollar for dollar, real world stuff, that's exactly what Charlie gave them - his act! Best, PSC

Is it true that Millers friends would rib him with the 'I'm a diceman' line.
Did he ever mention it? Kukram p.s- When I watched shade I burst out laughing at the dice man line. As I was watching it with friends they looked at me kinda strange as there wasn't really a joke. Still cracks me up thinking about it

Can you tip the real secret? What was the deal with his saying his name three times? |

There was a great film clip of Charlie Miller doing part of his act in a Hollywood movie at MAGIC LIVE last week. It was really a treat to watch.

Charlie Miller was an entertainer, not just a card man. As Bish mentions, he performed the classics. I first saw him at the IBM-SAM combined convention in 1959 in Chicago--I was a teenager. He did five or six tricks of his parlor routines--the ring on the stick, the Malini egg bag, the Chinese sticks, and some others, all of which were very funny. Later that year he was in Chicago for a long stay (I think with Jay and Francis Marshall), and he taught magic to some beginners, including me. It was then that I learned the imprompu ring-on-the-string from him. Later he was a fixture at the Magic Castle during the 60's and 70's. The first time I saw him there was in 1965 or 1966 before there were show rooms, and he was doing the ring on the stick in what now is the first floor bar. One of the recent films of Charlie is the Stevens Egg Bag video, which shows him (in his later years) doing his egg bag routine with Johnny Thompson. They did similar routines using the Malini bag. I don't recall seeing any film or videos of Chalie's classic ring-on-stick, but I think his handling is much like Mike Skinner's, which is on Mike's Classic series from L&L. (Mike and Charlie were friends during their overlapping Castle years, so presume Charlie influenced Mike.) All that said, Chalie also was masterful card man, albeit with somewhat chubby fingers. His strip-out false shuffle--which is described well in Expert Card Technique--was a standard for many years before being supplanted by the Zarrow.

It also is a priced routine of mine, learned from my friend, and it does use a perspex stick/wand. Charlie Miller had little touches for an impromptu version without the *extra* and one of those little touches was to adjust his glasses, after a pass from right to left with the ring, to adjust, to read the rings inscription. This *move* added greatly to the deception re the pass, in fact the pass was the *reason* for transfering the ring to the other hand, in order to adjust his glasses. Also this was described in Genii way back.. I simply don't se any similarity with any of Michael Skinners versions on his *teach-in*-series and Charlie Millers handling, but I don't postualte I'm entirely correct.. , also you mentionrd Mike's *classic* series? I'm soley aware of the *teach-in* series and the 3 vol. tapes put out by Houdini Magic, so I might have missed it, if there exists more public material..

I think Charlie's ring on stick is on another Stevens tape. It would be nice
to have more published on his work. |

I ran into Tom Blue the other week in a used book store and we spoke for about two hours. What great stories he had!
The Castle must have really been something during the late sixties and early seventies. It's still fun, but wow the vibe that was apparently going on! Anyway, he told me a funny story about a little joke Vernon played on him (Tom) at the expense of Charlie's ,,,,pride..for lack of a better word..at the Castle main bar. This occured later in Charlies life. In short, Dai and Tom were at Vernon's couch and Dai said to Tom 'If you really want to learn about gambling moves and how the cheats really work, you should go talk to Charlie over there." (He was at the bar.) "Make sure to ask him to tell you about the 'table' story," Vernon said. So Tom goes over, introduces himself and they apparently hit it off. As Tom told me, "I was asking him about some classics of magic then cards...he was happy and excited that someone was interested in the more traditional stuff." (I'm paraphrasing here) "So I'm thinking to myself, 'gosh, this is great! Charlie Miller is going to be a friend of mine!'" "Then, I finally asked, "So Charlie, tell me about the 'table story.'" At that point, Miller's face sank, he got up, spun around and shouted at Vernon "Vernon, you son of a ---!!" (Now, at this point Tom didn't remember the exact phrase, but he did say it was very out of character for one such as Charllie Miller and it a little startling to see the quick change of emotion)....then Charlie walked out and left the Castle. Tom turns to see Vernon laughing his head off. From that point on, Charlie would just say "hello" to Tom. The table story is basically a moment of embarassment. He had a table that would hold-out cards and a small group of guys figured they'd have a go in Vegas. This was the mid to late fifties. Anyway, the short of it was that the minute Charlie drove across state lines, the FBI was waiting for him and stopped him and found the table. Evidently, after all his skills and abilities and mustering up the bones to hit Vegas, the idea that 'cops' caught him before all that must have been a sore spot. One of those 'had to be there' but easily understood!

Also, in an information-is-power type culture keeping that stuff out of the light of day increases one's personal feeling of power to have exclusive access. Sad but true. I've always felt that to know Miller's material is to also gain an insight into what must have been in Malini's mind. And, as Malini has always been a hero to me, that is important. Shame on those who'd keep us in the dark about the life and times of one of magic's greats. G

It is sad. If the story is not told today, our children and grandchildren probably will never know who Charlie was. More sadly, they might not want to know it, even if later on someone will come up with the facts, let us say in 2025.

Do you mean the one with Pat Page and Jay's Mother?
Posted: Dec 12, 2006 4:25pm ------------------------------------------ Ok... it was one of Fran's Anniversary Celebration shows. Magicians from everywhere were in town and the "chosen few" stayed at Magic Inc., that year included Pat Page and yours truly. Actually we were outside of the actual Charlie Miller Suite as that was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. James Marshall (Jay's mom and dad). For privacy (?) Jay had put up a 3-fold screen between the two cots Pat and I were sleeping on. There was an aisle from the Charlie Miller Suite to the "Powder Room" between stacks of books and our cots. In the middle of the night Jay's Mother comes out and goes into the bathroom. Pat Page thinking it was me decided to hop out of his bed and sneak in to min... he is tip toeing toward my bed -- stark naked (it was hot in the summer's there) and just as he is in full view the bathroom door opens and it is Jay's Mother. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA... Pat vanished in a flash! I nearly wet the bed laughing so hard.
