Hmmmm.... I haven't posted in a while so this is a weird feeling.
I bought the On the Stage DvDs by Jeff McBride and looked at the effects but couldn't seem to figure out what to start with so I showed my friends the demonstrations off the DvDs. This being a dumb decision because within seconds I had them explaining how the tricks were done. They said none of the effects were good and that I should move on to something else. My questionis if there are good effects on this DvD what are they? Or should I move on to the next DvD or good trick that can be performed on stage.

First off, as a magician you should NOT have been showing your friends any magic DVD or book that explains or shows the secrets of magic. Remember that magicians oath we all are supposed to be taking seriously? Please remember this next time.
Also, remember that magic is NOT about fooling anyone. Magic is about entertaining people. The magic on the tapes are simply tools in which can be turned into an awesome routine through the use of patter, music, character, style etc. You are what makes the trick entertining not the trick itself. Kyle:
The McBride "Magic on Stage" DVDs are set up so you can watch the entire performance first, then go to explanations - I think this is what Wikiro did. He just showed his friends the show portion. Wikiro: Did you show your friends all three DVDs? I think the Commando Act (volume one) is the strongest of the three. Ron |

To entertain people with magic I really think you also have to fool them.

All of the effects are good on that set of DVD's. Most if not all of them are classics!!! Linking rings, mouth coil, dancing cane, zombie..

I've found that when "friends" see a magic show by someone else, they tend to try to deconstruct it because they think they're trying to somehow "help" me in some perverse way. Their intentions are good, but the result has been some of the most insanely funny methods I have ever heard!
Instead of asking them which effects you should use, just say that you got a DVD of a really cool magician and, even though you know how it's done, you thought they might like to see the performance part, just for fun. Just a thought. Lee Darrow, C.H.

That was probably the best purchase that I have made in a while. I loved the DVDs and thought that they had some valuable knowledge.

My question to you would would be: which effects did you like the most? It sounds like there were some that you liked since you stated that you "looked at the effects but couldn't seem to figure out what to start with."
I agree with Lee's assessment of how friends at times react when asked for this type of feedback. I also agree with Peter's comment, "To entertain people with magic I really think you also have to fool them." Reflect back on what you liked, what captured your attention/interest, and what matches your style and personality. As for what my favorites are in this 3 DVD set, I would have to say Volume 1: Rope routine. Volume 2: Chen Lee Water Suspension (I change the color of the water after it is poured to match the color of the silk that is passed through the tube); Egg on Fan; Snowstorm in China. Volume 3: Fountain of Silks; Zombie Floating Ball; Candle to Silk to Cane. You only asked about effects, but a lot of what Jeff talks about in between showing and teaching the effects is valuable and can also direct you with working through where you are at right now. It seems like your friends' reaction somehow left you disappointed with these DVDs. I think Jeff is a good teacher, and I think you can find some good material on it. Give them another look --- go with your own senses. Take care, Jimmy
