I am a good friend of Vinny Marini and I just received a copy of this DVD from him.
The material is billed for beginners and intermediate magicians--and I think that this is the market for this DVD. According to Vinny's website and the DVD jacket cover, the material taught on this DVd is: Ambitious Aces - An ambitious card magically finds the four aces. Adagio for Dots - Small packet effect with cards. Crimped Transpo - Two card coin transposition using no gimmicks. Liquid Penetration - A very visual rubber band penetration. View Demo [Note: This footage was not taken from the DVD] Crossing the Delaware - A coin effect using 4 half dollars. Color Zone - The backs of this smal packet change as the cards "heat" up. The Eagles Have Landed - My take on the classic coins across effect using quarters. These original sleights are taught on the DVD: Wrist Change, Squeeze Palm, Crimp Palm (Coin), M.G.O force, and more. ****** Of the effects, I think that I enjoyed "Crimped Transpo" the most. Very nice handling and routine structure. Will be fairly easy to learn to do smoothly and it is a great impromptu effect and is suitable for either table-hopping or sit-down. I also liked the "Liquid Penetration" move and can easily see this move being incorporated into a rubberband routine utilizing other rubberband moves such as those taught in CMH ("Crazy Man's Handcuffs") and Russ Niedzwiecki's "Pinnacle" routine, etc. In "Crossing the Delaware", Vinny combined two well-know coin moves done virtually "simultaneously" (actually, one right after the other might be a more accurate description) and he ends up with a nice coins across routine here. A word of warning: IMHO, one of the moves taught (Goshman Pinch) is not easy to learn to do smoothly and convincingly nor to conceal the coin in this pinch while doing "other neceaasry things" in the routine. It's a great move but it might not be a beginner's move. That said, I like the way Vinny has incorporated that move with the other well-known coin move to produce his coins-across routine. I also was intrigued by "Adagio for Dots". As Vinny mentions, he took an old John Scarne self-working card effect and added additional "convincer" handlings to more convincingly "sell" the swindle involved here. This is a nice packet card effect that breaks with the more traditional card effects that use "regular" cards. Vinny has incorporated three different methods for accomplishing the basic premise of the effect. As such, even though he repeats the effect, he doesn't utilize the same methodology more than once. And, I can certainly see combining the "Follow the Leader" concept of this effect with an "Oil and Water" effect--thereby creating a longer seamless routine. "Adagio for Dots" has certainly got me brainstorming in this regard. One disappointment I had with this DVD was Vinny's sometimes brief and truncated explanations of one or more of the effects or some of the utility moves he highlights on this DVD. I would have preferred a little clearer explanation of these items, repeated demonstrations demonstrating the same (and maybe from different camera angles). But, with repeated viewings, you should be able to learn the effects and moves taught fairly easily. Note that, at least on my copy of the DVD, the "Ambitious Pop-Up" move listed under the Utility Moves section is "performance only". My other main "niggle" about this DVD is the fact that the explantions cannot be viewed by clicking one time on "Explanations" and then sequentially viewing all of the explanations. Rather, you have to click on each effect's explanation, and when done viewing that particular explanation, you are taken back to the "Explanations" menu. To view another trick's explanation, you have to repeat the process. This might be something unique to my computer or the software program I used to view this DVD...but I don't think so. All in all, not a bad DVD. Very little in the way of original presentational themes but Vinny has added his own touches and handlings to these "old chestnuts". In fairness to Vinny, that was the rationale for this DVD. The routines were not meant to be earth-shattering but are probably just the ticket for beginners (and some intermediates) seeking to put together some fairly basic and easy routines to utilize in a restaurant or other table-hopping environment or for magic to do after dinner among friends. These effects are also nice to keep in reserve for the situation when someone asks you to "do a trick". (All, IMHO) Mike

Frankly, I like seeing the old chestnuts performed well and Vinny clearly demonstrates that he is familiar with the ones on his DVD and has been doing them "his way" for years. I predict that you are going to especially love his innovative handling on the "Crossing the Delaware" effect. Mike

Hi friends:
I must say I was surprised when I take the first look on Vinny´s new dvd, “The Godfather”. The quality of the effect, the quality of the sleights, impressed me. I mean this is material, maybe for new or medium magicians, (I don´t think this, I think this could be use for everyone, since a newbie, to a professional) that allows you to get really new effects, and real new sleights, all of them original, that couldn´t be found anywhere except on this dvd. I fell in love with Crimped Transpo, what a great two cards, two coins routine, very clever, very visual, very clean, with a beautiful handling. Liquid Penetration is one of the best rubberband effect you could find in the market. Very visual penetration, seems like real magic. Adaggio For Dots, is a routine Vinny shared with some years ago. But I must confess that everytime I see this in his hands, seems to me a miracle. What a great combination of follow the leader, and oild and water, to creat an impossible routine for spectator´s mind. Ambitious Aces was a real surprise for me. How this man could be so original? Who could come up with a stand-up routine that use a four aces revelation by an ambitious card? New sleights, new movements, new revelations, and a very precious and different routine. If you want to be special doing an ambitious card routine, this must be yours. About the coin work, specially Crossing The Delaware and The Eagles Have Landed, I am not a coin man (but I´ve seen a lot of coin magic), and not use to do coin magic in my shows (just little touches). But sure I will prepared both routines. Very clever coin across routines, very good coin work. Specially to improve your coin routines. And Color Zone, is a packet effect, so clean, so shocked, so precious, that must be in your show. Is pure magic. Of course as you know this dvd also includes original and new (and the best of all, very convincing) false cuts, and new sleights like Wrist Change, Squeeze Palm, Crimp Palm, M.G.O force, and so on. Definitely a must have dvd. Vinny Marini is the meaning of High Quality Magic, and this dvd is a great one. All the best magic, Pablo Tejero

Thank you guys for the nice words. There were some mistakes with the editing and I want to address some of the issues on the DVD so I am temporarily halting sales of my new DVD for now.
If you already bought one from me, I will resend you the new copy when it's ready - at no cost. Once again, thanks for your support and I apologize for any inconvenience. I'll try to convince charliec to put his powerful effects on the updated dvd. vinny |

Vinny has graciously sent me a copy of his new DVD "The Godfather" and I have to say "Thank you Vinny."
My review is almost exactly the same as Pablo's in that I loved Crimped Transpo, a super clean, direct to the point transposition of two coins. Crossing the Delaware is a four coins across routine using only four coins (who would have thunk it) but my favorite two effects are Liquid Penetration, the only thing I would add to this great effect is to have your spectator hold both ends of the pencil, stressing the fact that the band is not being slide off the ends. I really like this one and will use it. The second effect I like is also a rubberband trick and is not listed but hidden within the explanations. I'll leave this to you to find and enjoy! "The Godfather" has some good card & coin work and a couple of great rubberband effcts, but the best thing is that Vinny is just a nice and likable guy that I hope to get to meet one day. If the magician really loves card magic then I am sure that they will enjoy the routines on Vinny Marini's “The Godfather"... There are some real outstanding gems on this DVD. Great plots for magic and original ideas... Outstanding is the word that comes to mind.
As many of the routines were explained above my favorite was the Ambitious Aces where an ambitious card and MAGIC find the four aces as the ambitious card is placed into the deck and comes to the top... Talk about an entertaining and different way to do the ambitious card... This is one hot effect on a DVD of several hot effects. If you like card magic that is clean, impressive, strong and entertaining - plus looking for new and different ideas... And practical magic for doing close up in a restaurant... Don't pass this DVD up... It is great!

Vinny is a very good magican and this seems to be a very good dvd. But I was wondering does he only have the 2 dvds ( Godfather and top-change)and whether I should get one the other or both. Also do either of these dvd's contain vinny's giggle force.

I have recently purchased this DVD as well as the Top Gun DVD....they are both great. Vinny's "adagio for dots" is simply beautiful. His various card and coin handlings are relatively simple to master but powerful moves.
I personally had a few spots where I was having trouble figuring out what he was showing me, but a quick PM to Vinny and he offered to send me some video clarifications. That's the kind of guy he is and the kind of service that too often doesn't happen. I would recommend this DVD (and the top gun) to anyone. |
