Hi there,

Here's a "brief" summary/review of Jay Sankey's new "Revolutionary Card Magic" DVD set (volumes 1 and 2). I'll try to be as brief as possible but then again, how can I be brief with over 5 hours of video footage?!? Smile Anyway, heeeeeeeere we go!

PRODUCT:
=======
Jay Sankey's "Revolutionary Card Magic" double DVD set - Volume 1 (Performances) and Volume 2(Explanations & Sleights)

SUMMARY:
=======
A DVD set well worth your time and attention...packed full of interesting plots, effects, ideas & moves with the pasteboards. And for the price, the amount of teaching content is well worth its value. Performances are well shot, effects are well explained and should make a great addition to your card arsenal. Overall DVD rating: 8.5/10

SANKEY'S MARKETING LINE:
=================
"Trade in your bicycles for a motorcycle!"

"Featuring 28 brand new routines and 17 lethal sleights on 2 outstanding DVDs...This is a completely self-contained program and all sleights are explained in exhaustive detail. Learn the "real work" and nitty gritty details of the Hyprocrite Force,
Slap Vanish, Burst Production, ATFUS, Mercury Card Fold, One Hand Top Palm, Twirl Change, Tenkai Card Palm, Hapa Force, Tilt, Starfish Change, Wichita Slip, Double Erdnase Change, Shanghai Change and so much more! Many appearing on DVD for the first time! As an added bonus, Jay teaches his handling of the Classic Pass in far greater detail than ever before! The timing, tell-tale signs, the all-important natural covers. It's all here! Even tips on the Jiggle Pass!"

PRICE:
=====
It's not currently released at Penguin Magic yet but I'm sure it will be soon...I hear sometime early September. If you're able to attend a Sankey lecture, you might be able to pick up the DVD set at that time...possibly at a reduced cost.

TOTAL RUNNING TIME:
==============
305 minutes...roughly 5 hours

PRODUCTION:
=========
DVD production will be divided up into 3 general areas: Video, Audio & DVD Navigation.

a) VIDEO - I found the DVD footage nicely shot...on par with the quality of his other DVDs. There's not much else to say. No complaints here.

b) AUDIO - I have one main "beef" with the sound on these DVDs. Almost all of his performances were shot in one of two venues: In a magic shop (Browser's Den, Toronto, Canada) and a hotel he was staying at. The levels were fairly good in the magic shop but for some reason, the audio was much lower in the hotel. I suspect this is due to poor microphone placement in the hotel.

c) DVD NAVIGATION - Intuitive and user friendly. The menu itself is divided into 3 parts:
"Performance", "Explanations" and "Sleights". You can play any of these parts from the very beginning, or you may choose specific chapters. "Performance"
features all 27 revolutionary card effects, in addition to some gags and other effects. "Explanations" features all of the explanations for the 27 card effects. And finally, "Sleights" explains 17 different sleights that Sankey uses throughout the DVDs.

The first DVD (volume 1) only consists of "Performances". The second DVD (volume 2) features the "Explanations" and "Sleights". If you don't have the proper DVD in the DVD player/DVD-ROM drive, you will be prompted to insert the appropriate disc.

QUALITY OF TEACHING:
================
Jay spends a good amount of time explaining the detailed workings of each effect. His explanations are clear and concise. If any effect requires the use of any sleights, he would take the time to go over the mechanics of them. Also note that there is a separate "Sleights" section on DVD Volume 2 that covers any sleights used in the 27 effects he performs. Overall, very good teaching.

PERFORMANCE EFFECTS: (Volume 1 & Volume 2)
===============

1. PRACTICE PACK - A pack of cards are strung together by a shoelace. Both cards and shoelace are examined. The showlace is removed, and 2 cards are freely chosen and then returned back to the deck. The shoelace is laced back through the deck and with a tug, the 2 selected cards are magically pulled out of the deck with the shoelace! And as a kicker, the remaining deck is seen to have all its holes removed by the shoelace as well!

2. CARDIVORES - Jay's insanely clean version of Roy Walton's "Cannibal Cards." Three cards are randomly selected by the spectator. One by one, they are placed into the middle of 4 "Cannibal Queens" and eaten. There is no sign of any of the selected cards in the packet...except only the 4 "Cannibal Queens".

3. TRACKING DEVICE - A card is freely chosen and lost in the deck. The deck is placed back into the card case. The magician then takes a button out of his pocket and wraps it with a piece of paper. The paper is then lit into a burst of flames, leaving no sign of the paper nor the button. The button is then found sewn to the face of the selection in the card case!

4. FACT OR FRICTION - A card is freely chosen and the spectator signs his initial on the back of the card. The magician takes out a Kleenex and wipes the initial off the card, commenting that it hasn't dried yet. The magician then has the spectator initial the card again and this time, it does not wipe off because it has fully dried on the card. He then proceeds to take it one step further. He visibly tears the signed card. But with a wave of the hand, the card is fully restored (no tear!) and it's the exact same card with the spectator's initial on its back.

5. IN CAPTIVITY - Two cards change places despite one of the cards being wrapped in electrical tape! A card is freely selected and is found to be "one of the most troublesome cards in the deck". The magician gives the card to the spectator and instructs him to place his hand on top of it. Next, the magician pulls out the "other troublesome card" out of his pocket...which is bound up (taped up) with black electrical tape. With a shake of the hand, the bound card transforms into the first card (still bound!). And the spectator lifts his hand and finds that the original card magically transformed into the second card! They switched places!

6. HELTER SKELTER - The spectator shuffles the cards. The magician divides the deck into 2 piles. He then takes one pile and fairly weaves them together (all face down)...this is the "sane" way of shuffling cards. Next, he takes the other pile and shuffles them face up and face down...this is the "insane" way of shuffling cards. Then slowly he takes one single card from the insane pile and places it on top of the sane pile. Magically, what was once the "sane" pile becomes the "insane" pile with cards face up and face down. And what was once the "insane" pile becomes the "sane" pile with all cards facing down.

7. SFX - The deck is shuffled and any two cards are used. The first card is openly placed into the magician's front shirt pocket (still visibly seen)...which can be signed. The second card (also can be signed) is placed on the table. With a magical pass, both cards switch places...signatures and all.

8. FORT KNOX - The signed card is found inside a folded envelope resting inside the card case! A card has been selected and signed, and lost in the deck. The magician then proceeds to show the spectator "the weirdest thing he has ever seen". He opens the card case and pulls out an envelope. He then opens the envelope and pulls out a folded card...it's the signed selection!

9. DREAMSCAPE - Four blank cards are shown, yet one by one, they transform into the 4 Queens! It must be a dream.

10. UBERCHANGE - A card changes even though it bears the spectator's initials on its face! A card is freely stopped at and memorized. It's then lost in the deck. The magician then tries to cut to the
selected card. He upjogs a card but it is not the selected card. The magician then draws a little box on the card and instructs the spectator to put his initials on the face of that indifferent card. He then takes the indifferent card (with the initials on it) and begins to massage the card. Magically the card transforms into the selected card with the initials still on the it!

11. BLIND MAN'S BLUFF - Intuition poker! Three spectators call stop on 3 random cards...they're placed face down on the table. Slowly the magician reveals the 3 selections...one King, then another King, and finally another King! Then with a slap of both his hands the magician finds the fourth King. Here comes the kicker...the remaining deck is all blank!!!

12. AUTOPSY - "Do you have what it takes to be a cop?" It's all about observation...
A piece of "evidence" is quickly shown to the spectator: A card with a piece ripped out of it. It's then returned into an envelope. Then the spectator is shown three pieces and challenged to identify which one could be the one that was missing from the card. A piece is selected by the spectator and dropped into the same envelope with the card. Mysteriously, the card is then pulled out and is fully restored...the selected piece not only matches the card but ends up fully restoring the original ripped card!

13. NOSFERATU - A vampire card impaled with a 5-inch nail remains unharmed! The 5-inch nail is driven through a card box. But upon opening the box, a card is found completely unharmed with no holes in it
whatsoever.

14. DIRECT FLIGHT - Cards are shuffled, and a card is freely touched from the middle of the pack, memorized and pushed back into the deck. The top card is turned face up and confirmed not to be the selected card. The magician then instructs the spectator to keep believing that the top card is their card. As this happens, the magician revolves the deck around a few times (still with the face-up indifferent card in view). And visually the top indifferent card transforms into the selected card!

15. MASON'S ACES - The spectator does everything in this effect. He takes out the 4 most powerful cards in the whole deck...the 4 Aces (all face up). The spectator is told to deal 3 cards face down on top of each Ace, creating 4 piles. One pile is randomly chosen and covered with the spectator's hand. The other 3 piles are gathered together and given to the spectator. He is asked to deal all the aces
he comes across in the magician's hand, and all the other indifferent cards he comes across in the magician's other hand. But to the spectator's amazement, the other 3 Aces are nowhere to be found! The spectator then impossibly finds that the other 3 Aces have appeared and joined with the single Ace underneath his hand!

16. HIGH RISE - A mystery card from another deck is placed into an empty cardbox (which is placed on the table in full view). Any card is freely selected and shown around. It's then returned to the deck and lost. The magician then turns everyone's attention to the mystery card in the cardbox. He pulls it out and it exactly matches the previously selected card.

17. PARTICLE THEORY - A card is freely touched, memorized and lost in the deck. The magician then turns over the top card (not the selected card) and declares it will be the one to find the selected card. The magician slaps his hand onto the deck and the "top card" vanishes completely...it has "busted into tiny particles". The particles are then recombined back into the deck. The magician asks the spectator whether he wants the card to recombine "above" or "below" their selected card. Regardless of their response, the magician spreads through the cards, finds the face up indifferent card, and reveals the selected card above or below the
indifferent card. It's been located!

18. POROUS - A card is freely selected and in one motion the magician visually pierces the card with his thumb. But realizing this cannot be possible, the card is returned to the spectator completely unharmed and examinable.

19. BLAZE OF GLORY - The signed card appears in a ball of fire! A card is selected and signed, and then lost in the deck. The magician takes out a piece of paper and draws a card on it with a sharpie. It turns out to be the selected card! Then, the magician takes out a lighter and lights the paper on fire. In a big burst of flame, the paper incinerates and a folded card appears out of it...dropping to the floor. It's the signed selection!

20. MISSING EVIDENCE - Without a doubt, one of the strongest torn and restored cards ever! A card is freely touched/selected. The card is then openly torn into several pieces. The magician isolates one of the pieces on the table and puts the other pieces into the empty cardbox. Then he has the spectator initial the isolated piece and in turn places that piece into the cardbox and shakes up the box. Without peeking, the magician reaches inside the box and finds the one piece with the spectator's initial on it. But the magician points out that this is easy, since magically the other pieces have melted back together into a whole card...all except for a hole in its middle, where the initialed piece came out of. The piece and the "donut" card perfectly match.

21. GOOD VIBRATIONS - Three cards are randomly chosen by three different spectators. They are then slipped
back into the middle of the deck and lost. The magician shuffles the cards a bit and locates one card. Unfortunately it's not the selected card of any spectator. However, the magician points out that the card has the same suit as the other three chosen cards. Then with a shake, the single card turns into all three selected cards...with the same suit, and the three cards' values adding up to the single card's value. Then with another shake, the three cards all "come together" and add back into the single card.

22. LEECH! - A drawn leech on a card visually moves across the back of a card. Then it jumps onto another card under the spectator's hand.

23. THREADBARE RISE - Cause as many cards as you want to rise out of an examined deck without threads, magnets or rubberbands! The DVD line says it all. Smile

24. I.D. - A card is freely chosen and then lost in the deck. Another indifferent card is then taken and has its corner ripped and given to the spectator. The remaining "torn card" then magically turns into the chosen card!

25. CHAIN GANG - A selected card escapes under lock and key! A packet of 12-15 cards with punched holes on the top are locked up with a padlock. The key is placed in an envelope and the spectator puts his hand on it. The spectator marks the position of a random card with a business card and memorizes that card.
Magically the chosen card disappears from the "padlocked packet" and is found in the envelope underneath the spectator's hands.

26. PAPER CUT - The "torn and restored transpo" Jay closes the shows with! A card is simply peeked at and lost in the deck. The magician throws down one card in hopes that it's the spectator's card. It is not the card. So for missing the card, the magician opts to perform a "death-defying feat". He rips the indifferent card up and puts the pieces into his mouth...in complete danger of paper cuts. Then, he takes the pieces out of his mouth and the card is magically restored...but it's not just the indifferent card, it's the spectator's chosen card.

27. ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON - The selection appears in a borrowed salt shaker! The spectator calls "stop" on a random card as his selection. The magician rips the corner of that selected card and places it on the table in full view. The ripped card is then pushed into the middle of the deck, lost. He then takes out a rubber band and wraps up the entire deck with it. Then he takes a borrowed salt shaker and hits the deck with it. Visibly a play card appears from within the salt shaker. He takes it out and it's the spectator's signed card with the corner ripped out of it. The corner that was in full view is then matched up with the salt shaker card and everything perfectly matches.

GAGS, JAY'S THOUGHTS & OTHER EFFECTS: (Volume 1)
===========================

1. ULTIMATE DOUBLE LIFT - GAG: Also seen on his "Oh My God!" tape, this new double lift method will "keep everything together"...Betty Crocker style! Smile

2. HOMEGROWN - A mentalism card effect done with a head of lettuce. Smile Nuff said.

3. "PERFORMING MAGIC WITH CARDS" - Jay's thoughts on this topic (he gives 4 main points).

4. FALSE CUT - GAG: Jay's version of a false cut. Smile

5. THE EQUINOX LOCATION - GAG: A lesson on defusing the gimmick. A card selected...a thumbtip vanished and reproduced. Smile This one's rather strange.

6. DON'T BLINK COIN VANISH - GAG: Takes his "Messiah Coin Vanish" one quantum leap further! Another weird one...but some people might use it.

7. THE PC VARIATIONS - 2 solid variations on Sankey's "Paperclipped" effect.

a) A selected & signed card is magically found in a lone paperclip in an empty card box.

b) A Christmas/holiday spin on the original "Paperclipped" effect.

8. "WHAT IS THE EFFECT ABOUT?" - Jay's thoughts on one of the most important questions when creating, developing, writing or performing a card effect.

9. BAKER'S FORCE - GAG: A card force involving a metal cookie sheet...great for the corporate world.

SLEIGHTS: (Volume 2)
=======
I won't go into great detail in describing each sleight (for obvious reasons) but you'll hopefully get a sense of what each one is about. Plus, I'm sure most of you already know what they are and how they work anyway! Smile

1. BURST PRODUCTION - A visual variation on Looy Simonoff's "Flippant Move". A card appears almost out of nowhere on the top of a face-up deck.

2. SEESAW DOUBLE LIFT - Another method to a double lift...offering some nice cover to the front edge. It works just as well with triple lifts.

3. SUBSTITUTE TRANSFER - The "Vernon Substitute Transfer" described in detail here.

4. TILT - Ed Marlo's "Tilt" move described in detail.

5. CLASSIC PASS - The technique, timing, tell-tale signs, and a variety of covers for the classic pass.

6. STARFISH CHANGE - Invented by Sankey when he was 12 years old, a bit angly but quite visual!

7. WICHITA SLIP - Can be used as a force/switch...will take some practice, but overall a great move.

8. MERCURY CARD FOLD - The "Mercury Card Fold" is described in detail here.

9. DOUBLE ERDNASE CHANGE - Method explained to change one card to another...and then another. Smile

10. ONE HAND TOP PALM - The title is self-explanatory...taught well.

11. TOPPER - Frank Garcia's "Topper" explained as a force.

12. HALF PASS - The "Half Pass" is described in detail here.

13. HAPA FORCE - An interesting force involving the half pass...I've never seen this one before.

14. TWIRL CHANGE - Ed Marlo's "Twirl Change" described in detail here.

15. TENKAI PALM - The "Tenkai Palm" is described in detail here.

16. HYPOCRITE FORCE - A very fair selection of a card...but it's a force. I'm going to try this one out!

17. SHANGHAI CHANGE - Another card/colour change...involving a one-handed fan and a visual change!

Well, that's about it. Overall, I'd have to say it was a pretty good DVD set to watch. Of course, it's not for everyone but for the card worker who would like to check out some interesting card plots, effects, sleights and ideas...this is one worth considering. Enjoy! Smile

Great review. Only thing I don't like is having the explanations on a different DVD, I like to watch the performance and then the explanation right away.

I think Jay's email newsletter said something about this being available on Sept 1st.

Hi everyone,

My pleasure! I'm glad you all enjoyed the review! Smile

Big Jeff: Yup, the performances and explanations are split up on separate DVD volumes. I guess this really comes down to personal preference. Thanks for the release date info!

I'm not sure but yes, with all the material he's unloading, you'd think he IS retiring! Smile The DVDs are just one big card magic time capsule for him! Smile Or perhaps a magus capsule?

Hi all,
I saw Jay's lecture yesterday in Montreal. I have been following him since his debut. Yesterday was one of his finest performance. All the material covered was interesting and very often outstanding. I really enjoyed it. So if he goes though your town, do not miss him.
And no it is not his "chant du cygne". Jay has other very good material coming up as one of his trick will show you. Smile

Hi sburke,

It's sold as a set of 2 DVDs...not individually. It's actually in one single DVD case but 2 DVDs are in it.

Hi griff13,

It is a trick about romance, two hearts that come together. I do not want to divulge too much here but with these few words you will undoubtedly recognize it.

Have fun at the lecture,

Yves

Hi Mr_Nutkins,

They should be available from Penguin Magic, probably sometime early September...according to Jay's newsletter, maybe even as early as Sept. 1st.

If you can make one of his lectures across Canada or the States, you can probably pick them up there too.
