As Bill mentioned, acids also are agressive and do attack stainless steel..

And there are also various grades of stainless steel as well. In the case of the particular firearm in question, it was a high grade piece of stainless -- a Ruger Old Army, black powder cap and ball revolver, Bicentennial Model. The owner had used corrosive caps in it as well as a blackpowders substitute called "Pyrodex," and then failed to scrub it down properly. It was permanently pitted.
Ironically, a normal steel pistol would not have been as severely damaged, and if the owner had used real black powder, the damage would not have occurred!

Concerning dents, I vividly remember me doing my first cup through cup moves with my new stainless steel van Dokkums. I was a little hestitant. After some good moves, one of the cups dropped of the table on my Martin D-28 which lay in an open case.
That was the first dent in my beautiful guitar (and in my heart!) The cup does not show any damage ;-)

You could have at least lied and said that it was a Yamaha FG-150. That must have hurt a lot!

If your useing chrome or stainless on stage, don't polish it.It will be hard to see under lights. If you"re having copper or brass cups plated you can ask for a satin finish insted of a mirror finish.

Would any of you advise me to alter my patter idea mentioned in my original post?
If I stick with the storyline that the cups have been around for a very long time should I just explain that they look so good because they have been taken such good care of through all those years? Perhaps adding to their magical characteristics as oppossed to looking very old.
In December of '06 I was diagnosed with a very rare cancer, Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans. One in a million people worldwide are diagnosed with this type of cancer annually. Sarcomas account for 1% of all cancers. Knowledge is power!

If you feel moved to polish them (and I wouldn't) you could always say that you keep them polished, because your great-grandfather rubbed them and a genii came out of them ... but that's another story.
