Hi Guys.
I would like to hear your experiences with the Shell Game out on the streets (gambling use), and a magic show (entertainment use). Do you prefer gambling or entertaining purposes? Thanks. Best, Michael |

I would love to hear about people's experiences on the streets with the shell game. I would not want to encourage anyone to try it, however. It is a felony in most places, and not something to try for a lark.
The word "gambling" should not be used in connection with the shells, three-card monte, or fast and loose. These are what Soapy Smith called "sure-thing" bets. There is no gambling involved, only a swindle. As WC Fields responded to the question "Is there a gambling game going on in here?": "Not the way I play it." |

Not original with me, but can't remember where I first heard it:
"This is not a game of chance!... (loud aside: .. you have no chance!!" |

If you do it on the streets for money with or without a mob it is a swindle. Not gambling...
If you do it in a show and do it well and it entertains the clients as well as the audience it can be entertaining... It all depends on who is doing and for what reasons - don't you think? You can see video of the shellgame and three card monte at my web site 1975 Chicago TV!
