If you get extra cash, buy books, not individual tricks. It also depends on what you are looking for. Brushing up on your showman ship never hurt. How much cash are we talking about? There are thousands of good books to get.

Magic & Showmanship being one of them. Depending upon whether or not you are a newcomer to magic you may also want to check out Royal Road To Card Magic, Expert Card Technique, Modern Coin Magic, Encyclopedia of Card Tricks, Practical Mental Magic, & Corrinda's Thirteen Steps.

Not trying to be funny here just suggesting that you build a nice base of knowledge that help to separate the wheat from the chaff later on.

You might want to check out

They sell pretty cheap stuff in good condition.

Books are a good buy and performance-only videos.

I know many people will steer you towards books which is great if you can learn from that format. I mean I love to read books on Magic history, or on showmanship and presentation and if that's the case you can't go wrong with Ken Weber's "Maximum Entertainment" or Darwin Ortiz "Strong Magic" in fact I'm sure many would qualify those as must reads. Another fantastic book which I find invaluable and very easy to learn from is Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic. Now for me when it comes to learning difficult sleights out of books or something like Card College I might as well be reading French, and no I do not read or speak French. That's where I find videos invaluable and if that's your case I would consider some of the following.

Johnny Ace Palmer vol. 1-3 and at $10 a piece from MagicSmith they are a steal - a lot of great material and insights on showmanship, presentation, style, misdirection

Johnny Thompson's Commercial Classics Vol. 1-4
Tons of great material taught by a master

Ellusionist Videos
A little bit of everything - Good material, great teacher

Gregory Wilson's On the Spot

Mark Jenest's Miracles While You Wait
With some reworking you have some killer stuff here.

Just my opinions though,

Well, if you are really new to all this, and you don't have the skills yet, then yes, books and DVDs would be the best first step to take. If you have extra money, then you've sure come to the right site in HP! We're talking HIGH-end price&quality! My advice would be to get some instruction on linking ring manipulation (Hey! 600 years and still popular as ever! Can't beat that!), then purchase the Porper effects such as 'Ghost rings' (the big ones) 'ring-spin', and mabye that $700 '2-to-3 ring effect.
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

I guess he won't be able to, e-man. You're 15 months and 3 days late in answering that post. He must have already spent whatever extra money he had.
