If he offered the equipment and routine for $450.00 on a one day special, would you buy it?

If I were a full time performer and found a "motivation" or inner logic to do the thing... YES.
Such things are what make magic special and memorable for audiences.

Jonathan Townsend is pointing out a little bit about how pro performers think. They buy or make what fits into the act. Many time they come up with ideas on their own. Or they buy and then bend it for the act or show.
If it fits the act or show they consider buying magic as an investment into something that is going to make them money. Because performing magic is a business. That is a lot different that the magician that does it as a hobby. They often buy magic effects for fun. And many times it was an impulse buy. A lot of magic that many magicians buy gets thrown in the desk drawer and never used. The point I feel is that we all place a value on what we buy. When I see a magic effect that I like I place a value on it by price and - If I can use it in my shows or as an effect to use when booking a show to impress a client... But if I SEE A VALUE... To an effect in booking my show or performing it in my show. I most often budget for it and then buy it no matter what the price... Because for me magic is an investment in how I make money... The same thing for computers and advertising tools it is an investment... At least that is the way I Look at things...

An interesting thread.
I feel we all take ourselves too seriously. The thumb tip really caught my eye. DeLites is a one trick thumb tip. If a performer turned around and performed an effect wit a thumb tip, bill switch or whatever, no one would think 'Ah, D'Lites!" There are what? 100 million magicians in the world. An extravagant estimate but that would be 1 for every 6,500 people on the planet. It's not the prop. It's the performance. gene............ |

They are talking about $44 sponge balls from Tenyo on the Good the Bad and the Garbage thread and they are repeating many of the points raised in this thread.

It's kind of funny, but so many of the threads on this forum start off with false premises. This is one of them. What is the false premise? That this is a D'Lites routine in the first place. It really isn't. The real effect is the "drinking" of the glowing lights and the passage through the body. I've actually seen the routine performed live, on stage.
Whit's description of the routine is spot on. Go back to the fourth page of this thread to read it. If this thing consisted of two D'Lites and a glass, I would side with those who think it's a bad value for the money. It is much more complex than that. Whit has given away more about it than I would. I won't buy it, not because of the price, but because I don't have a place in my show for it. I would be wasting the money.

It is a 'false premise' that this thread is about the D'lite routine at all. If you read the original post carefully it will become clear that the controversy about the D'lite routine LED TO the discussion in the first place, but that the point wasn't whether or not this particular routine is worth the money. adios, joey |

However it (The D'lite effect) was used as an example of overpriced items, therefore used as the basis of the premise.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

Re read my quote. I said "...so many of the threads on this forum START OFF with false premises." This thread started off with the premise that it was just a D'lite routine. Q.E.D. Never let facts or logic get in the way of your reasoning.

Dr. Palmer made a point about false premises while unwittingly perpetuating a false premise himself, yet he was so bold as to find others to be laughable (if that is what he means by "it's kind of funny"). I really do hope nobody feels 'emasculated' (nice word - you ARE "the pretty good" now aren't you!) by Dr. Palmer's off-target attempt at smug cleverness. I would not have felt the need to chime in again here (especially as I realise that it was important to Dr. Palmer to feel he had the last word) but I suppose this is an intellectual jock-strap for me.
