Hey I have always had a love of silent acts, and silent comedy. I was wondering if you think that a silent street act would work. And also what kind of stuff to perform. So far I have got the idea of a 1 coin routine. The Linking Rings. A Billiard Ball Routine. The 5 Card Manipulation effect, and maybe the misers dream. What else could I do I should also say that I do not realy want to use a table.
Thank you

Jeff McBrides commando act can be done silently, but he does it with a boom box.

Unless I am mistaken, I believe that Jeff Sheridan performed the majority of his street act without speaking. Jeff Sheridan also performed effects that did not require a table.

Jordan-
I perform 4-6 shows every Sunday at a local outdoor market festival-All done to music & the feedback is very positive. I use a boombox cassette deck with background Music as mentioned in above forums. Its a great place to try out new routines - I Also do a wrist chopper to music which goes over really well using a spectator & a few gags-rubber hands etc I also created a linking Ring routine just for these shows that I finish with Last week I was surprised but the Diminishing cards went over really well-great response which surprised me-I finish with the last small cards vanishing in a shower of confetti!! Use music!-Your effects sound great & will work well-At Night I use Fire & Rocco d lites etc Some silk effects-20th Century also work well, TT Vanishes & colour change silks as well, Misers Dream-watch angles A bit of music for the audience attracts a crowd reasonably quickly so have a go Its also a great place to try out routines to see what feedback you get in difficult performing circumstance Good Luck Sorry for going on a bit!!!!!!!!!!!! -Brent |

Short effects such as levitations, vanishes and and inverted vanishes (what I suppose is an 'appearing act', as opposed to a 'vanishing act').

I've seen several street performers who are totally silent. Some of them have been fantastic.
You mentioned Billiard Balls. I remember one guy doing them in a street show and it bothered me that everyone on my side of the audience saw the fake. Unless you can find a way around that I'd suggest you leave it out. Good luck |

Hi there,
I agree with Brent using music. I always use music when I busk. I talk a lot as well as it suits my style of performing. You didn't mention how you would GTM. Something to think about. I have one suggestion or question. A one coin routine may only play to a close audience, and not a large one. Have you thought about how big a show you would like to do? I do a semi-cirlce show myself. For me rope works great for busking. I do a lot of audience participation as well. JoJo

Hey thanks for all the feed back people. Ok to elminate angle issues with the misers dream I though about using the downs palm for the effect, which works well. Also I dislike rope magic.....sorry, just my preference.
Also whats GTM. For my billiard balls I would obviously make sure the audience were in front of me during performance, this can be easily arrangeed.

GTM = Get The Money
You silent act sounds great and I wish you luck. Re: Billiard Balls - There is also the possibility to work up a routine without the standard gimmick, just the balls. I've done a couple and seen even more. Cellini does a ball production that could be exposed by bad angles, but he manages to pull it off. I think in "Al Leech's Legacy" there is an idea for reducing angle problems for the standard multiplying balls method. Unless you position yourself where side or rear viewing is impossible, these lines of thinking may prove easier than asking people to stand only in front of you.

Jordan,
What you have now could be a great street act. If you do physical comedy as well as the magic your act will be a better money maker. A GREAT tape for the type of act you describe would be charlie Frye's Excentricks tape 1 and two. They are available here: http://www.charliefrye.com/ Charlie is a BRILLIANT performer and does just such an act. It would be a MONSTER on the street. The most powerful thing about a strong silent act is it can play anywhere in the world with no modification. The thing to keep in mind is if you want to make the big bucks you have to find a way to still involve the audience with volunteers from the audience. Work on playing with the people without words to keep them involved. You have a great idea! Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! It can be a hard life out there, and hopefully they change attitude later when getting *wiser*...as they are ruining it for them selves too..they'll find out..hopefully... PS. The *Durania* balls actually almost could be done surrounded, when being carefull..because the [ can be locked with the fingers and so shown all the way around, even from behind..but then palming and loading it/from it, might still be a prob...

I checked out Charlie Frye's site that Dan had suggested above. I really liked his show a lot. Checked his demo video. Brilliant stuff.
Thanks for the link Dan. JoJo

You have to be good enough to sit down and CREATE a way that the trick can be done surrounded. There are tricks I won't do because they can't be done in the round but if something was important enough to me that it had to be done, I would find a way to do it. Sunny Holiday does the multiplying balls with a shell and has it so that all the dirty work is covered. It is a great little routine and one Cellini probably taught him. The guys described just sound lazy. It doesn't mean the trick is no good. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! If blocking angles with your own body becomes problematic, making your performance appear "too tight", drag someone out of the audience to be the unwitting backdrop under the guise of close range verification, or any of several other possibilities. Constantly changing position so as not to isolate any section of the audience makes everyone feels as if the magic is foolproof... "Just look at how many people are watching this, and from so many different angles. If there was something to be seen, surely somebody would have." If it is possible to work in the round to insure everyone has a fair chance to see what's going on, surely it is possible to use the same formula for concealment. This mystery guy with the exposed angles has obviously put too much stock into the phrase, "good enough".

Jordan's routine sounds terrific. What I'm wondering about is how is his hat if he doesn't have any hat lines to educate the Gaji. How does the legendary Mr. Sharadan handle this? Jeff McBride’s commando act is very strong. Three minutes in you have an audience member on stage for a comedy rope routine that goes into the rings, and you don't have to say a word. It works just as well, better for me, if you speak.

Ok I haven't checked out the video yet as I don't currently have the time, but don't worry, I will. And I will comment. Thank you very much everyone who has commented in thoughts of comedy ideas. My first plan and one I like very much is to be a sort of Charlie Chaplin character. So comedy in the Chaplin style with magic.
What do you think?
