Hi guys, I've always wanted to be a magician and a mentalist. I'm an avid Derren Brown fan and hope that I too one day can become a world renowned magician such as him. Can anyone tell me where to begin.
I don't have any money to purchase Derrens books such as "Pure Effect" and "Absolute Magic". I hate to sound like a beggar but please help me.
There is no such thing as unflux!!! or is there?

You might want to buy the Tarbell course in magic. It covers everything.

Mark Wilson books are great as a start. It teaches almost anything. Tarbell is great too.
Ask yourself first, "where do I want to start?" Coins? Cards? Ropes? Dice? Stage Performances? Then it will help you choose what videos or books you'd like to purchase.. |

For coins find a copy of Bobo's Coin Magic. It's from Dover Publishing so it's pretty reasonable.
For cards go out and get Royal Road To Card Magic. Those two books go along way. Deerbourne |

I'm a bit puzzeled, not least as to why after uniflux said that he had no money all these post suggesting books have turned up.
How old are you Uniflexm and why can't you get yourself a second or a part time job ? You mentioned always wanting to do magic. Its time to do something about it. Do you intend doing magic or mentalisim, its not the same. Since your mention of D.B. can we assume its the latter ? What about Bannacheck and all the other mentalists. No big deal with the books. Christmas is comming ! Spend your time trying to work out how D.B.'s tricks were done. Consider acting leassons. Can you join a local magic group ? And this is important !! You will never be any good at magic or anything else if you sit back and expect things to drop in your lap. We really can't help you. David Blaine didn't get his show because he was the best magician in America, but because he pushed and worked for it. Get yourself the books and go out and work. Eddie |

Unflex,
If Derren Brown is your model you should pinch your resources, save and buy his books. If you buy other books, you'll end up with every book, but, those you seek.
POOF!

I was wondering, ive seen Derren Brown on TV, and he does stuff like guessing the name of a person someone is thinking of... I was wondering does he really guess the name on the spot? or does he somehow research it and is just acting.
If he really just guesses the name on the spot I'm dam impressed lol. Btw I have no clue about mentalism or how it works . Tom |

I second the Tarbell course. It's only $37 on CD-ROM (the CD has both HTML and PDF versions of the same thing) from http://www.lybrary.com and it covers, in something like 1100+ pages (!), every type of magic there is. And, amazingly enough, it covers probably the majority of all magic which exists. (If not a clear majority, then a HUGE and significant amount of magic.)
What's more amazing is that the course is around 70 years old - and still hasn't been topped for completeness. If you don't like electronic books, then you can buy the hardbacks, which have a LITTLE more (about 1.5 volumes worth) magic in them. The newer stuff isn't by Tarbell though. And the books will run you from $33 to $40 each -- and there are four or five volumes.

If money is a problem and mentalism is your goal, the most cost-efficient purchases you can make are Anneman's Practical Mental Effects and Corrinda's 13 Steps to Mentalism.
The Anneman book is available for about $10 US. Corrinda runs about double that. Both are much cheaper than Derren Brown's books -- which are most likely too "theoretical" for a person just starting out. Beg or borrow the Anneman, or anything by him. All mentalists working today built some part of their act on the ideas he put forward fifty years ago. |

Don't join a local magic group if you want to be a success.
To get started, check the public library for magic books. |

Your Local Library may have a few basic books. I have also seen Mark Wilson books on magic there.

Just in case you guys don't know. I live in South Africa. Not only are there very few Magic Clubs... in fact I've never even heard of any magic clubs around my part of town. Also I have a full time job, I work six days a week, getting a partime job is out of the question. I don't earn Dollars I earn in Rands which is about 8 Rands to the dollar, so all the books you suggest are way to steep for me. I'm not expecting things to fall in my lap, I'm simply looking for a push in the right direction. I'm a actor already I've performed on stage and in a local movie, but like I said I live in South Africa, and the movie industry is not as lucrative as it is overseas.
BTW, thanks for so many prompt replies it's really appreciated.

Go to this website and apply for membership. It's totally free and they have a very good selection of online books available.
http://www.thelearnedpig.com.pa/ Good luck, Richard BTW: You can also get Annemann's Mental Effects online from http://www.lybrary.com. It's only $6 and is the best money you can spend if you're interested in mentalism. |

If you go to the Learned Pig...good luck! I can't get in and I know many others who can't. Yet our applications were impressive (not to sound arrogant).

Astinu,
I agree. I have not received any comment on my application to the Learned Pig. I submitted my application about a month ago and have not received any word on it. There is nothing on the sight to enable me to contact them and inquire as to the status of my application. Edh

If you like Derren Brown, you're in luck. He's going to be here this month as a guest of honor, for 4 days.
